Game Thread Lady Vols vs Kentucky

To watch Evina, dancing on the sideline during a timeout was something, un-Lady Vol like.

As long as she keeps playing Lady Vol like (as she is most definitely doing), she can dance her ass off on the sidelines as far as I’m concerned. Get over it.

During a timeout? Why was the timeout called? I don't know what team you played on, but you're supposed to be listening to the coach. This type of action exposes exactly what a lot of these posters are saying about Holly, and it's not about her appearance. After saying that, I feel it will be cleaned up after watching the film. Go Lady Vols!

How do you know she wasn’t listening?

REALLY! I DON'T THINK YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME! Why you guys are able to call people names on here and get away with it is beyond me. I do know, Attitude Reflects Leadership. I also know from coaching over 20 years, and knowing Pat and Holly personally, that attention to detail is a priority. Last but not least, I know for a fact, you won't say that about me to my face! Go Lady Vols!

It was a media timeout.

They were actually finished with the timeout when we see Holly talking to assistants and Evina dancing. Both teams were waiting on the officials taking extra time to figure something out.

I've seen players from multiple top ten teams have playful fun moments in timeouts with the game in hand. Some of you guys want Holly to rule with an iron fist... just another wish of wanting Holly to be something she is not. The players listen to and respect Holly. Meme, Evina and Annie are constantly having one on one conversations with Holly throughout games. If we can notice what Holly does with her mouth why can't people notice the vast amount times the camera shows her interactions with players, specifically the guards. Meme has stated Holly is very hard on her... but much of the tough love and coaching up is done in practice, workouts and film sessions.

I agree with a little of what everyone has said. In game adjustments are very important! Holly is Holly and that's not gonna change. To watch Evina, dancing on the sideline during a timeout was something, un-Lady Vol like. I actually thought MeMe had a pretty strong game. Hayes has to develop an outside shot, because teams will just back off of her and take away the dribble drive. Davis is a very good rebounder and finisher. She just has to find a few more inside moves on offense. Jamie and Mercedes, just stay consistant. Most of the championship coaches have a few things in common, Pat, Geno, Dawn. They didn't, don't, wait to clean things in practice. They will put the Star player on the bench if the situation calls for it. The message has to be delivered early, so that the standard for winning basketball will not be lost, anytime, anywhere! Go Lady Vols!

The best thing that happened was this game was over in the first 5 minutes. It also turned out to be the worst thing as they ... the players realized that this ky. team was not any good! We all have played/coached teams in this situation. It is how you handle the game process after the iniatial drubbing..
What was the score after first quarter? ( 26-7 ) not sure. However, everyone in the game and in the stadium knew this game was over!!! But Mitchell would not let his team quit and you have to hand it to him and his players for continuing to play hard.
Sometimes players get toooo relaxed and lose focus.. Dribbling behind the back when not necessary, forcing passes instead of making the easier pass, shooting when a teammate has a better shot, JUST NOT PLAYING SMART BASKETBALL!!!

We started to play lackadaisical and let Ky. Actually out score us the rest of the game! Making this game closer than it should have ever been. A few things I thought changed the outcome of the game...
1. When we substitute it cannot be a wholesale change. Unless at end of game and there is no chance to lose!
2. Jamie and Mercedes cannot be taken out at one time and let the subs lead themselves towards the cliff we almost went over... at least until the end of the game and no way to lose...
At the end of this season the freshmen will not be freshmen any more!!!! Then they should be more mature and be able to handle themselves.
Evina dancing to the music..... I hope they all get that relaxed! Much rather they play relaxed than uptight and nervous 😬 JMO

During that time out .... Holly was talking to Evina and they BOTH were looking at each other eye to eye! Evian was listening and moving her head in a positive way that said: Yes Coach .... then Holly went to someone else and continued her coaching.
Did we all watch the same game ??? Maybe some were getting popcorn? 😁

I think your point 1 is spot-on, though I don't think it was so much about the LVs shutting down.

My take is that KY was not ready play at the start-- it is funny folks always note this when it happens to TN (under the Holly can't coach rant) but never recognize it when it happens to our opponents.

As a consequence, everything came easy for the LVs in the first quarter including hitting their outside shots.

But KY upped their intensity after that sleepy start. But the LVs kept trying to make the same plays that had worked in the first quarter (with poorer results). Plus, Meme got carried away and took (and missed) uncharacteristic shots. I can see that how that happen after she hit a pair of open threes but her shooting miscues led to some bad possessions.

I also think that the lay-off had some detrimental effect on their play. It was not evident in the first quarter because KY was a such a non-factor but as their defensive pressure picked up, you could see the LVs execution (and perhaps fitness) was not top notch.

I also agree with you about certain line-ups not being as effective, though this was a low risk game to experiment with some different player combos (and in the category of "Holly can't do anything right," she has been assailed on other threads for not mixing up things more and giving MR and Nared more breaks).

We also saw clear reminders that Evina and Annie are freshman and they sometimes are too aggressive (picking up needless charging fouls) and forcing passes into impossibly tight windows.

As I have said before, Annie needs to diversify her game (though that may not be possible during this season). When your primary play is driving the lane, you become predictable and teams figure out how to defend that. If she can develop a respective mid range jumper, then she becomes really hard to guard.

On the plus side, and this is a big deal against KY, the LVs won most of the hustle plays during the final three quarters and that kept KY from ever threatening. Hustle and determination can compensate for a lot miscues.

Opinions are like A-holes, everybody has one. Mine is, you practice like you play. You respect every team, no matter their record and show good sportsmanship. if you're out of the game, because you've beat the other team down, then dance, shout or whatever. when one of our "stars" limps off the court, Lord forbid, because our players are rubbing it in the opposing teams face, don't come crying about dirty play. All I'm saying is treat everyone like you would like to be treated. Celebrate after the game. Win with class! Go Lady Vols!

Evina was not rubbing anything in anybody’s face - she was having a fun, playful moment. God forbid anybody have any fun. I’ll take a team like this who plays well together and has little fun moments on the sideline during a media timeout over last year’s nightmare any day! As much as E gives this team, I can give her some fun little sideline moments - I think she’s earned it and I rather enjoyed seeing it! Please lighten up!

Yes I did! It let me know that some players are allowed to do what they want to do, (diamond, Evina), with no remorse for who's watching. I've already stated that that has probably been touched on, after watching the film. I too, like players to play loose, but to do these things while continuing to have turnovers is a little over the top IMO. After you become a WNBA champion, maybe, but not a freshman at UT having not even played the best teams yet. Go Lady Vols!

Jordan Reynolds, Alexa Middleton, Andrea Carter, Tea Cooper, used to be playing on this team!!!!!

NO THANKS....... I will take these kids every time and their faults..... we are much better off! JMO🤔

How can you mention DD and Evina in the same sentence????? There is no comparison.... one is a team player and the other is a me first mentality.

I will let you guess which is which! Did you say you coached for twenty years?

Are you IVY 😈

I also find it odd and I also find it amazing that all these people who are not involved with this program, do not personally know this team and work with these players on the daily, think they know better than their head coach. It just makes me laugh. 😂

Fire away.... 😂😂😂😂😂

I guess they are just "living the dream."

😂😂😂

Serious note: my problem was attacking evina’s character... why would she celebrate an opponent getting hurt? I mean that’s not only questioning her integrity but also her upbringing and everything I’ve seen about her family said they are quality people by the way they treat people and their interactions with us fans! So I think the previous poster needs to retract that statement as I doubt she was dancing because of an injury🙄 Incase you didn’t know Racer we were up in that game by the way✌🏾

No, I'm a Realist! While Evina is a pretty good player for a freshman, why not mention Rennia, or Anatasia? They play hard, give all they have for the team. There's been games where Anatasia ran the team as well or better than Evina. I don't see her getting all this praise. let them grow into being a star, instead of anointing them "Star" status before they play the meat of their schedule. Having fun is ok, as long as you don't go overboard. Go Lady Vols!
