Game Thread Lady Vols vs Kentucky

I may or may not be crazy but I'd replace Davis with KD in the starting lineup for a while. She seems out of rhythm.

If I was replacing Davis it would be with Green and not KD

Green will rebound like Davis and play similar defense she wont stretch the floor but you’d still have Westbrook, Hayes, and Jaime out there to do that

This game was similar to the game we played against Wichita State. Kentucky is a terrible team and will finish at or near the bottom of the SEC. We had a bad shooting game and 20 turnovers yet we won by 14 winning is all that matters. Ok to play a bad game sometimes if you win we'll play a lot better at home the next game.

Agreed. You and I are of the same mind about Green. I'll even go as far as to admit that I kinda wish NEXT season were going to be her first at Tennessee because using her to give Mercedes a rest now and then is, IMO, a bit of a waste.

Yeah, yeah... I know that every good team needs role players, and it appears that Green's role is to come off the bench as a support player, and I feel like she could succeed in a bigger role.

I'm glad the LVs won but CHW is just hard to watch.

I agreed with several of your points, but your obsessive revulsion for Holly's physical appearance and sideline manner is, in a word, disturbing.

One gets the feeling that you feel your masculinity is threatened by women who don't mesh with your idea of what "a real woman is supposed to look and act like."

I just hope you never turn your obvious revulsion for non-girly-girl women into either justification for discrimination against such women or, worse, violence against them.

Your attitude raises many red flags.

Yikes 😳

I don't mind CHW's demeanor, but I was really annoyed with an apparent lack of coaching towards the end of the game. They weren't playing well, and she just didn't say anything over a timeout and was standing around waiting for the game to end and talking to her assistants.

Umm she was coaching the game but reserve we’re sloppy at times and we had shot and lay ups we missed and she said after the game they will work on the lapses

I agree 100% with every word of your post.

You attended the game in Kentucky?

Licking one's palm of their hand then wiping it with a Gatorade towel is not masculine nor girly girl. IT's unbecoming on national t.v.!

The red flag should be given to you for suggesting that Holly is masculine and not a girly-girl. :ermm:

thank goodness we aren't playing USC or MSU today.

They lost focus of who they were, after Q1.
Can't let that happen...

Davis gets fouled more without getting the call than just about anybody? :(

I watch her drives and think the same thing, G... But she makes the ref's think, and that means she has their attention...SO she has to stick with in and let them learn her tendencies. I am going to watch her next few no-calls closely and try to break it down. I do think her shot has to grow up and release from the temple...If she was consistent in her jumper, I wouldn't touch it. But since she's not, I would retrain it now.

Hmmm. I'm not fond of the wasted opportunity to teach during that last timeout. Players weren't talking. Coaches not talking.

It's moments like that when it comes crashing in on my mind how different Holly is from Pat.

Holy isn't Pat. We know this. But she needs to be Holly the Coach, when it gets ugly. This team has to have one focus. Staff and player!

Nared just looked mentally off today offensively. I thought Meme looked like “Me-me’ in the second quarter and I didn’t care for that.

We haven’t played a game in 10 days and I think that showed. as the game wore on we just got sloppier and sloppier. Looking ahead our schedule gets insane on the road, so the intensity will have to change. I feel as though we will bounce back.

TN had a great 1st quarter! Team effort at it' best.

Major concerns with lack of efficiency the rest of the game. Holly is just not a good coach. Lack of time outs when the game got sloppy. Absolutely no coaching up but down. Bench players not getting into the game with the lead up by 20 most of the game.

There's a reason for that. Holly has nothing to say to the team. The only words she know is to 'play hard'. Cheridene Green played less than 10 minutes? Kasi got into the game with 2 minutes left. Kamera Harris got bench splinters and Kortney is just an after thought.

The Lady Vols are 13-0 but I'm telling y'all an undefeated season is not going to happen because of very bad coaching or the lack thereof.

Guess who does this? From licking the palm of her hand then wiping it with a towel. To incessantly raising her upper lip to her nose showing her teeth. Wiping her sweaty forehead unto her hair. The optics of a coach doing those things on the sidelines makes me cringe. Not a good look especially when the coaching is atrocious! :thud:

I'm glad the LVs won but CHW is just hard to watch.g

Then don't watch

I don't care if she looks like Braveheart... If she can continue to grow, as this team does, I am behind her doing so!

Maybe Holly isn’t that coach to be fired up and maybe she needs to rely on her staff more... I dunno I often wonder about how/what she thinks when it comes to her timeouts. I know a couple of head coaches who put their assistants in charge of their player substitutions and their usage of timeouts (Geno/Chris and Gary/Starkey to give you some examples) maybe Holly needs to let Gordon be that person for her.

I think Gordon is the spitfire on that staff the assistant that TN was missing to get in some of those players butts last year when they underperformed. Today, I saw her get a little fiery with Evina after two back to back plays that didn’t go as planned. The next play evina brought the ball to the top of the key, took control of the team and get the ball downlord for the score and the foul. Looks like when Gordon speaks they listen 😂!

Thanks for pointing out TJ’s obsession over bashing Holly’s appearance and mannerisms. It’s really over the top disturbing.

Was at the game. Vols started out focused and playing some of the best ball I’ve seen out of this team in some time.

The outcome became obvious after about 5 minutes, and certainly by the end of the first quarter. Frankly, I think the team got somewhat bored. They certainly didn’t play as well; UK outscored them over the last three quarters.

Other impressions from first time this year seeing them in person:
- Finally, a point guard!
- Actually saw some offensive flow, if not actual sets.
- Multiple times they turned down a three they would have launched last year, and instead made the extra pass to get a closer shot.
- The zone defense was aggressive, and most of the time suffocating as well. It looked a lot like LV teams of old: defense and rebounding.

Glad I went, even if I was the only orange in my section. Wanted to stand and sing Rocky Top at the end, but my wife told me to hush. 😊

The fact that you got likes for this is just as appalling as bringing up the appearance of a coach. It's a disgusting criticism that has no value to what this board is supposed to be about.

Holly deserves credit for how they started the game. The game plan was fresh in their minds and they executed well.

The last three quarters were not pretty on offense but we continued to play solid defense (great defense at times). We also held a 18-25 point lead for the majority of the game up until the last 3-4 minutes and we killed them on the boards. Rebounding was a focus after the Stanford game and they responded well.

Holly acknowledged the lapses and mentioned the team getting winded and rushing shots as well as drawing 6 charges... You're living in a negative dream world if you don't think the coaching staff will address the issues that we saw in the game.

The crazy part of this less than stellar game from the Lady Vols is that they probably played better than half of the other top 25 teams that played today. Louisville was awful after opening up with a 15-1 first quarter. 20th ranked Cal got blown out by 36 on their homecourt to 11th ranked UCLA. Ohio State was less than stellar against a struggling Indiana team. Duke lost to Miami and Miami has one of their least talented teams in a number of years. Maryland barely squeaked by Penn State. Then you have South Carolina and Texas A&M who both looked terrible on offense outside of each of their go-to players and SC had 17 turnovers.

The Lady Vols came off a 10 day layoff and won on the road in conference against a team that always shows up to play Tennessee and we coasted to a win despite a number of issues with our play.

And I personally love coaches that lay off the constant timeouts. Let them play through it... especially when they are maintaining a 20 point lead and not letting their poor offensive play negatively influence their defensive play. Mitchell took a few timeouts to halt runs or address poor play and it did nothing to help the Wildcats today. :)
