Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs LSU ; Sun Feb 9th ; Away game; 4 PM Eastern: ESPN

But now OK is a problem. We need them to lose twice more. They're 5-5 and have the tiebreaker over us. Their remaining schedule is Aub, Missu, Vandy, Arkansas, Florida and Alabama. Basically we need Vandy and Alabama to beat them.

Also, both Ole Miss and Alabama have 4 losses, so we have to beat both (which I think we will) and both would also have to lose one more game. OM still has to play KY (tonight) LSU and So Car as well as us so they're no problem unless they beat us. Alabama still has TAM, us, Aub, LSU and OK.

Vandy has 5 losses but has the tiebreak over us so we need them to lose twice. They still have Ms State, Aub, OK, So Car, TAM, and Missouri. Given they'll lose to So Car, we prrobably have to hope they lose to OK, though that helps OK.

Here's the standings:
A take away from this is" go Mizzou". Their streak of playing better now is at 5 straight games, so maybe can pull an upset or two that would help us reach the improbable 4th seed. Tonight, go Ole Miss

BIGtime "Go Ole Miss!" tonight. We need them to lose tonight as badly as we'll need to beat them when we play.

I'm so glad several people here are stats nerds and also with keeping up with who needs to win, who needs to lose and all that going forward, because I just look at all that myself and it's liike 👀 *blink* 👀 *blink* ... *blink* (gives up trying to keep it straight in my head)

So, thanks to everyone who keeps up with all this and shares it with the forum! 👏🏻👏🏻

You're absolutely naive if you think the upcoming recruiting class is going to have instant success then you're not being realistic. Tennessee is gonna miss so much production from this year's squad.
Spear averages 12pts
Sam 11pts
Tess 7pts
Puck 6pts
Jill 3pts
That's only the scoring aspect without even mentioning their experience and knowledge of the game, the pace of play and the work ethic to be power4 ball players

Hard to imagine how the team will be able to make up those 3pts a game from Jill...I would pretty much cancel next season. It's hopeless.

My Gawd, this year's team has improved after losing the programs' best offensive player since Candace Parker. An elite incoming freshman class and the portal available. I kinda think CKC will be able to make do with her roster.

As always, short, not particularly sweet, and straight to the point. At least Jewel got one courtesy question.

Basically Coach says they lost bc they didn't rebound and because they "took plays off". She says that after every loss and some wins and I'm curious what she means by that. If she truly thinks there are players not giving full effort that costs us games why the heck are they still playing? Why doesn't that get fixed? A seat on the bench should cure that.

I don't think she actually thinks they're quitting on plays. I think she means they're missing assignments, making bad decisions, etc. I wish she'd say that instead of indicating a character defect.

A little over looked fact. LSU shot an impressive 20-22 from the line. The LVs were 13-20 = the 7 point difference.

For all the compliments after the UConn win (and many posters who "saw" an astronomical improvement), I think we played pretty similar in both. LSU is a more athletic team than Uconn and they did better on the boards.

But in both games, it came down to some clutch plays down the stretch. Against Uconn, the plays went our way, not so much here (or in the 4 other close losses for that matter).

Of course, a coach can't say that. So, CKC falls back on her mantra about "effort" and players "wanting to win" but the fact remains that the respective effort levels at Uconn and LSU (both times) were all quite comparable.

The LVs are good enough to take most anyone down to the wire. The fact that they have dropped 4 of 5 close games against good to very good opponents is becoming a bit of a worrying pattern.

If we go back to the first LSU loss, that one was on CKC. Not fouling in that last shot situation (with a foul to give) was an epic coaching failure. She is getting a pass on that which is fine but that loss was hers. I would have loved for her to take a little ownership there but she seems to be in the "admit no weakness" phase of her career.

At OK, the LVs got the wide open shot and Sara missed the game winner. Life happens; Spearman missed a game winner against Vandy (a tougher but still makeable shot).

Right now, it seems like the underlying similiarity in these close losses is that this team does lose composure down the stretch and makes some costly mistakes (frustratingly often after they had just created a "mistake" by the opponent).

I think this team might have a little more confidence/competence if they also had a genuine "go to" player that drew a lot of defensive attention (ala Rickea), Coop and Ruby are not quite there yet.

I keep forgetting to say this, but was anyone else wishing yesterday that with 11 seconds left and down by 6, we would be shooting a quick three instead of having Ruby drive the lane to try to get a layup?

The only chance we had at that point was to get within three of them, hope to get a quick steal off their inbound, or foul and them miss, and then hope for another miracle three at the buzzer? I was yelling at the TV that two points wouldn't help much at that point.

Even if we'd taken and missed the quick three we MAY have had time to throw another one up and hope it went it to get within three with maybe 2 or three seconds left. At that point we'd have to hope for a couple more miracles to win, but ...

I don't know. I guess I just didn't like going for 2 when we were down six.

Fandom is always 20/20 hindsight. If Ruby had taken (and missed a three) and LSU grabbed the board (a likely outcome), would you have thought that the LVs should have instead gone for the quick two and then set our press to try for a steal?

Actually, no. There was a chance of anyone missing either a three or a two, but making a quick three -- by someone, not necessarily Ruby -- gave us a better chance of winning than making a two would have.

It appeared to me that Kim drew up the play to get a layup. Just not what I would have done. Sure, we may have missed the three, but if we'd made it, we'd be in a better mental state, down only one possession, one shot, to believe we had a shot to win. They STILL had a chance of stealing their inbounds after a made three.

We who? Who exactly refused to guard Gilbert? And are they still on the team? If so, why? Why would CKC, who works the hardass angle so relentlessly, put up with that?
Gilbert was 7-15 from the field including 3-4 from outside, which means she was only 4 for 11 from inside the arc. Her open 3s came on LSU moving the ball well and finding an open shooter when we were trying to double team trap the ball (sort of like what we did finding Jewell for open thress in the first half).

It just turns out that Gilbert was hitting those open 3s (unlike in most of her other games). If she shoots a more typical 1-4, we would have had another "great defensive effort', just like at Uconn who missed a bunch of wide open threes.

Our defensive scheme by design gives up open shots when pressure does not create a TO (it is a risk-reward scheme). It is not a refusal. It is a combination of following the higher pressure, trapping game plan and then not being able to cover space at superhuman speed when a pass gets through.

The flipside is that this pressure defense is getting us close to winning games against elite teams (and one actual win) so the risk-reward is working out okay but it just looks terrible when we are giving open shots and those plays stick in memory more than all the steals, forced TOs, and 10 second violations.

Due to Super Bowl festivities that prevented me from seeing this game...I finally watched this game today.....

Yes, it was a loss, but damn guys, make a few more free throws and it may have been a different/better ending for us....

LSU is not far better than us, they just came out ahead on the scoreboard; both here and there...I'll stick to that opinion...What the hell anyways.

I would prefer that Cooper does not try and drive through several players, but she does keep the game interesting....She's evolving into a very good/great player.

Puckett played the invisible offensive player again, and the "where did she go" defensive player too....Hell of a sweet person, but so much of her game appears to be almost in slow motion compared to the players around her...Just the way it is.

It's obvious what this team's limitations are...Unfortunately, until more athletic speed is wearing the Lady Vol colors, this will probably be how their season eventually ends; Just a few points away.

Coach Kim is very good for us, even if she does not scream and go wild at the refs, as a good friend of mine/ours wants her too...

Bad news for Auburn.....What the hell.

Yes! And, has anyone noticed that our team who used to let most teams shoot about 50% held both LSU and UCONN, two offensive juggernauts, to well below their season averages in points and percentages?

"EFFORT" was Holly and Kellie's mantras and post-game excuses,,,hope this trend stops quickly

Coop and Ruby resemble "early-Horston and Burrell" aka "Bulls in china shops"...Both need to hear the right words and then they're going to fly

So on the Gilbert portal comment. Shouldn’t all of the LSU group be insulted that she insinuated LVs were the offer she really wanted?

My preference in descriptions (particularly Rae) was baby giraffe on ice. But lord look at her now! She and Rikea may be the two most stunning young ladies in the WNBA.

I do not like throwing any player under the bus, however Samara Spencer did not score in the loss to LSU. She scored 14 points in the win over UConn. She played approximately the same number of minutes in both games.
