Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs LSU; Thurs Jan 9th ; Home game; 6:30 PM Eastern; SEC+ stream

We always knew this would be the dilemma against better teams. Can you actually press this aggressively AND successfully defend when it’s broken?

Maybe you don’t; you just count on the extra possession/ extra shot attempt formula to outscore them. And that’s come darn close to working the last two games.

Big danger is this rarely works in March w tired legs and pressure packed situations
And lower 3pt % due to unfamiliar gyms

I agree with this. In order to do so Alyssa, Jillian, and Favor must play more. Favor early in the 1st qtr after not playing in several consecutive games stepped on the court with her ability to defend and force an offensive foul call against Morrow or Flau’jae.
That’s a sign of a natural defender.
If defense is the priority then you develop her game to game so last night she can be ready to actually contribute on that stage and not just for 30 seconds to 1-2 minutes of play.
I don’t understand why Alyssa didn’t get most of all the 2nd half minutes off the bench in the 4 spot. I was encouraged that Jillian got the 2nd half start but Alyssa should have been utilized more at the 4 spot when the team wasn’t going with 4 guards.
At some point, if the priority is on defense and rebounding then Sara and Alyssa roles have to be reversed. She was battling hard on the boards and came down with some strong rebounds. The more she plays the better she will get this is a young talented player that experience will be valuable to her development now and in the future.
because its bad coaching on Jenna.. who does the subbing.. Just look. that's the white paper in her hand. Its script and no feel for the game!

Define a middle of the pack team.
This is flawed logic.
I’ll ask it plainly, you think just because a team that stands at 13-2 has all these issues because they came up short 3 combined points to Oklahoma and LSU?
Not a lot to fix. Top thing to fix and limit teams to one shot and get the ball. Those putbacks like 30 points last night is what made us lose. The press didn't make us lose it was not rebounding their misses. You can't give them or any strong team extra shots to score. We did both games and why we lost both games.

And this is where the system seems to be too complicated for itself. Press like hell then haul ass back and scramble to make up for mismatch caused by the press. No level of commitment can make that a success against top teams who you’re not turning over that much. Is that what’s so much “fun” to play? Doesn’t sound like it to me.

Seems like two options. Either fall back in these situations and play normal D, or if you’re just married to this system concede the bunnies and try to outscore them. But don’t put players in this crazy situation over a long haul season and then call them lazy and uncommitted bc they can’t pull this rabbit out their butts.
goes back to bad coaching and throwing players under the bus

Let’s say they win the next 3 games, the only game I’m looking forward to is Texas because they are better than LSU and Oklahoma by far, so that game will tell me where we are at that time.

You do know Oklahoma loss to Texas by 7 points right?
All your “rest assured” posturing of knowing without a doubt what the future holds is getting played out.

Yep. You have to position yourself between the ball and the bucket. It's the biggest issue we have.

The problem is some of us fans are blind to reality. The signs has been there before the 2 loses.. rewatch all the games and press conferences. They will be like to win 4 more conference games.

May need to start Latham and Hollingshead in one of the game going forward. They seemed like the only two last night willing to get in there and get the ball when LSU missed. They were two of the big reasons we were able to make a comeback.

Latham needs 25 minutes a game imo. Her athleticism changes things for us. She has to be committed to going to the glass to get that though. She could be every bit the rebounder Morrow is. That’s all heart, positioning and natural athleticism.

What worries me about texas is rebounding if we stand around dont box n hope somebody else get a board we are goin to get crushed on the glass they are huge upfront

Really surprised we didn't see more Lyss in the second half since she and Jill were the winning combo to keeping Morrow off the glass. I know Zee gives us more offensively, but Jill was one of only a few players who took a charge and Lyss was doing some aggressive rebounding. This isn't a slight against Zee either who I think continues to improve and has the potential to be an absolute monster as her time here progresses.

I'd like to see her get extended minutes simply because of her abilty to rebound and play inside. About as close to a big inside as we have. Spearman is just to thin and she hasn't shown much will to rebound the ball. She seems more interested in being a perimeter player.

Not going to happen.
I get your point about boxing out but Tennessee issue isn’t size anyway it’s the player rotations particularly in the 1st quarter with inserting one post player in the starting lineup.
The best starting lineup is Latham at the 4 spot with either Lazaria Spearman or Jillian Hollingshead at the 5.
One of the three between Whitehorn, Spencer, or Spear should come off the bench.
Having one of your best scorers coming off the bench when you have quality players such as Alyssa Latham that is versatile as a two-way player as a natural defender is essentially a cheat code.
See LSU and South Carolina.
If Tennessee went back to starting Lazaria and Latham or Jillian/Latham together they can match any Texas frontcourt. Oldacre now at Texas and Spearman played together at Miami. Both starting games at the 5 spot.
Not much of a difference between the two players.
The issue is that playing a 4 and 5 on the court together has rarely happened since the Iowa game and even though it hasn’t since November this team is still 3 combined points away from being undefeated in early January.

And I realize this is the style that CKC plays, but at some point you have to consider the need to slow down and take high percentage shots when the others are not falling in the basket. That is what the best teams do - if something isn't working - they back up, find the basket a few times and then move forward.

That 20 -0 run after an 0-20 run may not always come - just ask the men what happened at Florida.
If you slow down you expose our weakness of some on the court even further.

If she’ starts cooper there’s not a need to start Whitehorn, they play similar. We need a true PG so I wouldn’t take Spencer out the lineup. So I would ride with Jill, Latham, Spencer, Spear and Coop.

We can sometimes change out Zee or Jill but if you have a player like Latham that doesn’t mind doing the dirty work and not concerned ab scoring you keep her in the lineup. She has a high motor and always engaged.

It is going to be the key to every game. Just like it has been the key to the first three. Along with better shot selection. Some of the players taking threes need to stop or get in the gym and learn how to make them.

We moved up to number 16 in the Net passed Kentucky who should thank the SEC for their first half schedule. That second half is a killer however.

I get that analysis but could it work both ways?
Meaning as opposed to exposing weaknesses, we could very well identify some player strengths.
Alyssa Latham last season scored double figures in 13 games, posted 6 double doubles, and had over 10 rebounds in 9 games as a true freshman.
Latham can play in the post and bang in the post if the coaches mixed in that element to our offense.
She shouldn’t ever be standing in the corner to take 3s.
This kid can really play.
I think she loves being at Tennessee right now and Coach Tubner is a coach that I see as being able to develop her game to thrive in the SEC.
She needs a much larger role.
As much as respect CKC, I think she’s missing a chance to maximize the skillset of Alyssa Latham this season.
Also, a player that is as quiet and possibly shy off the court as Alyssa seems to be its typical for coaches/teachers to kind of overlook them by default.
I just see that potential in the kid and feel like there’s something more there and maybe the HC does too. We will see.
