Game Thread Lady Vols vs Maryland In the Sweet 16

And the thing is, we played that kind of crappy one on one offense most of the year. Holly made no adjustments and this is the result. She had the whole season to address the sloppy offense, turnovers, opposing players having career games, horrible transition defense... The list goes on and on. She couldn't get it done with the massive amount of talent she had this year, why would this be any different next year? Simmons and Harrison really made this coaching staff look better than what they are. Thomas with a career day against us? Why am I not surprised.

Pat's system never really had an "offensive system" as they exist today. Which is largely the problem in my opinion when you talk Tennessee versus a UConn or Notre Dame. One on one creating shots off the dribble and depending on your bigs to rebound just won't cut it anymore.

Spot on. They've done the constant dribble thing whenever a team shuts the inside game down. It's like that's all we know how to do. If we can't get it inside, we resort to constant dribbling which ends up resulting in poor one on one plays. That's all coaching there.

Totally agree with ya there, and I don't see holly changing that strategy anytime soon

The loss of Massengale hurt. She would have been a third scorer. She's not afraid to shoot. When 3 of the 5 players on the court are offensive liabilities, you won't beat the better teams.

Gotta feel for Simmons. She played a heck of a game, but most of the team let her down, along with the p iss poor coaching. Good luck to you Meighan. It was a pleasure watching you for the past four Seasons!!

A lot of y'all seemed to be happy that Carter was running the show and seemed to bash Ariel a whole lot.

Caldwell isn't the answer, either: We beat lsu twice, what does that tell you? They will get beat today. I would love to have the maryland coach--she is tough-minded and can recruit. Forget the PS tree. We will languish until we get a staff that knows what the heck they are doing.

You can have her, then.

On the national scene they have absolutely faded into obscurity. Even the announcers talked about on tv.

I like that you are an optimist and don't believe the sky is falling. That's certainly true but to deny that we aren't nationally relevant anymore is a little bit naive wouldn't you say?

Yep we can't hang with ND or Uconn. No chance of beating them. Oops and Maryland.

This teams needs to work on ball handling this summer. Burdick and Harrison were no shows today. Hopefully this will be a strong motivation. Next year the focus from day 1, game one has to be better. We have talent, but our posts must work on footwork, free throw shooting, and getting stronger. Not having Massengale did hurt in many games, so for all the people who acted like she was expendable, the tourney games proved you wrong Coaching was not why we lost this games, poor decisions and turnovers were

Can we please not run off anymore coaches? Yes, it sucks to lose but there were a lot of issues that had nothing whatsoever to do with coaching. This team has lived off comebacks but that luck runs out no matter how good you are and yes this team was/is damn good. However, not waiting until your back is against the wall is something that players have to learn themselves and it's also a part of the psychology of coaching but expecting a 2 year HC to be able to magically fix an issue that has a lot to do with player psychology and finding the right buttons to push individual players with individual psychologies, personalities and egos is a bit much. That is something a coach, like a good teacher, only learns from experience. It doesn't matter how many times you've watched another coach or teacher do it.

But isn't poor decisions, lack of focus, poor offensive execution, and just poor poor everything, especially when it happens game after game a reflection on the coaching, or lack thereof?

I don't want holly ran off. I want her to be successful, and to a certain degree she has. However, she has all these issues with her team staring her in the face and she hasn't fixed most of them.

give me a break, our 2nd year Head Coach made it to the elite 8 last year and to the sweet 16 this year and the mighty Lady Vols are going into obscurity ? I hardly think so,no matter what all the nay sayers are predicting

I say congrats to the Lady Vols

as all ways Go Lady Vols :clapping:

SW 16's should never be celebrated in this program. That's exactly what others meant by saying we're becoming a mere top 25 program. You can disagree but that sort of mentality and complacently is what leads to a slow decline.

Coaches are not to blame for many of the stupid decisions Burdick, Reynolds and Carter made during the game. Some of those passes were just plain dumb. Burdick looked like a fish out of water today.

Burdick IS a fish out of water. She is not ready to play against good teams. She's terrified to shoot, and lets the Alyssa Thomases of the world run over her like a freight train.

However, watching her against scrubs, you'd think she was an All American the way she struts and preens.

If she wants to act with Diana Taurasi 'tude, she needs to back it up with her results on the court against good competition.

If you're gonna talk a big talk then you better be ready to back it up. be up to the challenge instead of shying away from it.

Well I like Middleton as a two guard she will help with perimeter shooting. Nared averaged 30 a game as a senior so she should help. The thing for Holly and the team is to learn how to pass the ball cut down on turnovers. Does anyone win against top teams committing 21 turnovers not likely.

And don't forget Jasmine Jones....my god. That player is a turnover machine once she steps on the court.
