Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Miss St ; Thurs Jan 16th ; Home game; 7 PM Eastern; SEC Network WIN: 86-73

I don't want to get the women stirred up but - why do women have so much trouble making a lay up? And I don't mean just the full speed running lay ups. Also the stationary lay ups. Putback opportunities - sometimes from a player 6'5". I'm not really counting the ones that are highly contested or when a smaller player is having to try a circus lay up to avoid the post player. I know the men miss some also but not usually the way women do. Women hit the bottom of the rim - or they miss the square completely - or they slam it off the board so hard it bounces 6 feet into the lane. And I realize it's not all players. And this isn't directed only at UT players - but it includes UT players.

Uhh, the D1 men are practically dropping layups in. It's just different- D1 men's basketball is played above the rim and D1 women's basketball is played below the rim and there's nothing wrong with that unless you're expecting it to be the same.

Surprised in a positive or negative way? This team is super fun to watch, even the losses have been fun if bittersweet.

I havent been to Memorial since I was in high school, and I don't think my partner has ever been so we jumped on the chance to go.
I could call it positive or negative.

Surprised that it was a little higher than I expected for the girls since many arenas look empty on tv. That means Caldwell’s team has gained more popularity than I expected.

I thought maybe only the most avid TN basketball fans had caught on to this team’s success. So it shows a demand for the tickets because we’re doing well.

This will be my wife’s First Lady Vols game.

That's so exciting! I hope the high prices mean a good (and favorable) crowd. I do get the anecdotal impression that folks find this team really fun to watch. I know I am riveted by them.

I hope y'all have a great time!

I was super excited to see Jewel get in the “Future Coaches of America (aka????) program!
She will make a fabulous Coach and good for her she has had experience with three very different systems and coaches. I look forward to following her career!

Hopefully she can GA with the Lady VOLS ! I don't know if we can call this a rebuild with CKC or just getting all the players knowledge of the system and playing as a team. I've seen amazing progress the last 2 games on help side defense. GLV 💥

…and the offense is moving much better. Seems they are holding back on the drive into the paint with a pass out to the perimeter but that may be more a function of taking what the defense is giving. Back pocket.

easier to throw down than to throw up (pun intended)
seriously,,,I have a theory

When players practice layups it is usually in a layup line or non-guarded environment
then they have to do at breakneck speed or in contact with a defender
something they haven't practiced at breakneck speed and without learning to absorb/N/roll off of a defender

It is the recipe for faiure

Yes, want to sit with us?

Smallvol,it’s so good to hear from you! I certainly miss your knowledgeable posts and comments. Don’t blame you for abstaining from posting very much. This forum gets away from subject often. I do hope you and your family are doing well. GOD bless you and your family.

Only thing that worries me about Jewell coaching is that she is so darn sweet I wonder if she might struggle to be tough on her players when they need it. I could see a person like her feeling really bad that everyone on the team can't play all the time, and the inevitability of having a couple of players who may only ever play a minute or two. That's tough for highly empathetic people, and I sense Jewell is one of those.

But hey, the program will teach her a lot, and she'll know more what it takes to be a good coach. What a great opportunity for her!

It is good to hear from you too; I still pray for you and your lovely wife every day. I read threads some, but often it just makes me sad; you understand. We are doing fine, going to games and traveling, two granddaughters, Heavens! time flies. Keep in touch with several off site. TV’s boy is making us proud🧡. God bless.

I think her personality and smarts would be perfect for being a tv analyst. The other night, I was laying down with eyes closed listening to post-game presser and I heard her voice and couldn't figure out which coach was talking. It turned out to be Jewel sounding so professional. She has such a sweet demeanor I think she would be beloved tv personality and players would like being interviewed by her. So, if coaching doesn't work out for her......
