Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Miss St ; Thurs Jan 16th ; Home game; 7 PM Eastern; SEC Network WIN: 86-73

The LVs played a really poor 1st quarter but still ended it with a 17 to 15 lead. They kind of dominated in spurts fueled by great games from Sam, Ruby, and slow starter Coop, great job from her in not letting her bad 1st quarter effect her. Timely shots from Jewel and Tess helped to. This team’s style is kind of winning ugly but it’s a compellingly attractive kind of ugly!!

I think Kellie is just very new at the TV analyst thing and needs time to get over the new-job nervousness, which was likely compounded tonight by the fact she was discussing Tennessee. She, like all the other former Lady Vol professional analysts, was trying extra hard to appear to not favor Tennessee.

Kellie deserves a grace period to grow into the job and lose the nervous pauses and such. Except for Andrea Carter, I have never seen a new analyst who did NOT sound and look a little awkward at first.

I think she'll be good with more appearances. 🧡
She also has the tougher role. Steffi has been giving the “stats” job. She can sound knowledgeable and in charge but all she is doing is reading the box score, “well, they had. 8 more offensive rebound and 20 more points off turnovers. That was the game right there.” Whoa, you can read numbers! Kellie is left giving a more impressionistic analysis and she is struggling to get her thoughts out. But she will improve with experience. Just think about how much better Kamara Harris has gotten at play by play.

One of announcers said that CKC determines the starting lineup based on player practice performance. This was a habit of CPS. I wish CKC would adopt CPS's stong empasize on defense.
She does. It's just a different type of defense and a different philosophy of basketball.

Tennessee came into tonight's game leading the nation with an average of 26.44 turnovers forced per game, and second in the nation in turnover margin, behind Texas. Her defense is focused on generating a huge advantage in possessions and getting easy baskets off turnovers. And if you beat the press and get an easy basket, tip of the hat to you and the LVs will get you next time down.

Pat did what worked in her era. She used the press as a change of pace, but against other good teams, she just wanted her team to hunker down in the half-court and shut the opponent down. And it worked more often than not, but it was frankly butt-ugly to watch--watch some of those games from her last championship season if you have forgotten. If you tried to play that way now, you're not going to recruit well and you're not going to compete against good teams, because the game is more wide-open and athletic than it was 15-20 years ago. Even all these LVFLs who played for Pat and endorse Kim now realize this.

Kim needs to keep teaching what she is teaching and just have the team get better at it, which they are doing, not try to do what worked a generation or two ago.

Would be great to be the stool guy and clip board holder. He gets to hear all the huddle talk during timeouts. What a great job for him this season. Wonder if he gets any Nil money?

The girls played like champions of yesteryear tonight....Imagine Candace, with this style of offense and defense, would be almost lethal.

Nah, it's straight beautiful. The spacing, the lack of turnovers, the creation of turnovers, the using the strengths of each player. CKC is ahead of schedule IMO.

Don't know if it's been brought up but Jill has been running the floor well and has been really open on some cuts and pick & rolls but no one has found her. Really good activity for little reward. I hope it is noted in film study and our guards start to reward her.

Ruby keeps it all going until the other players get started. She kept us in it and ahead early. Great game by her last night.
I sent his quote to her Mom,,,well said

Zackly,,,Jillian has grown by leaps and bounds

Watching SEC now after the game. Is it just me or does Kellie seem bitter. That or she is not a TV personality
My take is she is doing a really good for a newbie in that genre. I don't think she is bitter, I think it is an uncomfortable position but it will get easier as she gets in multiple reps. I think anyone with a pulse would feel a little antsy commenting on their team 1 year removed and also being a VFL and a Vol legend. Very proud to have a former Vol getting TV personality reps.

I feel like EVERYBODY struggles in that "building". Doesn't deserve to be called an arena or even a gym. I hate the layout and coaches on the baseline. I did notice the other night one of the two coaches actually coached from the "normal" coaches box. There is no rule that REQUIRES coaches to stand on the baseline with their team. Might not be a bad idea for visiting coaches going forward.
agree and you are on to something,,,more coaches should take this initiative
I'd have vertigo playing on an elevated floor

We are going Sunday.

My wife and I will be there with 2 of our friends.
My wife and I are looking at going Sunday. Kind of surprised at the ticket prices. I would normally go see the men, but I’m supposed to go to Florida game in a couple weeks and haven’t seen the Women play since I was in school 20 years ago.

Surprised in a positive or negative way? This team is super fun to watch, even the losses have been fun if bittersweet.

I havent been to Memorial since I was in high school, and I don't think my partner has ever been so we jumped on the chance to go.

We will be there Sunday to see LV's. We went to the Winthrop game a couple of weeks ago with daughter and grandkids. Had a great time. Vanderbilt is only 70 miles from where we live so we thought we would catch this game also. This team is really fun to watch. It should be a great game.

I don't want to get the women stirred up but - why do women have so much trouble making a lay up? And I don't mean just the full speed running lay ups. Also the stationary lay ups. Putback opportunities - sometimes from a player 6'5". I'm not really counting the ones that are highly contested or when a smaller player is having to try a circus lay up to avoid the post player. I know the men miss some also but not usually the way women do. Women hit the bottom of the rim - or they miss the square completely - or they slam it off the board so hard it bounces 6 feet into the lane. And I realize it's not all players. And this isn't directed only at UT players - but it includes UT players.

Hmm, you might surprised. If you take out dunks, where men D1 players's on average higher verticals gives them an edge over their women counterparts, I bet the shooting percentages on putbacks in traffic are closer than you think. You see blown layups in the NCAA men;s and NBA pretty regularly particularly among smaller guards. If you can play above the rim, everything gets easier. For women, even a 6-5 player like Jillian, they are not playing above the rim.
