Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Miss St ; Thurs Jan 16th ; Home game; 7 PM Eastern; SEC Network WIN: 86-73

I think Kellie is fine. She’s trying not to look like an absolute homer, and approach the game from an “independent” standpoint. It must feel awkward either to ask — or not to ask — a question that suggests improvement is possible. As she gets more experience I think she will be more relaxed. I bet she is more relaxed already when she’s doing a non-Tennessee game. VFL. The situation will get less awkward as time goes on.

I thought we played better on defense tonight than we've played in SEC play this season. They shot 46 percent to our 43 percent, but we were on the boards strong and other than late in the game kept them off the foul line. 20 turnovers to our 12 good effort on to play in Nashville next.

The start of the game was fantastic — at the 2Q media timeout, we had them only on pace for 54 points. At some point I think they started to get too many fast break points though, which could have easily made this a game if it wasn't for a really solid offensiv performance on the other side: almost 1.2 points per possession! We might be #1 in the country in that stat after TCU's game tomorrow; it looks like KSU will fall below us given that they still haven't reached 60 points, now in the 4th QTR.

I did think the halfcourt defense played well throughout, though, as you say. But if MSST was just able to run into the paint out of the press, they scored at a really good rate today, in those possessions.

We did modify the press some tonight not much trapping in the backcourt. We were getting back and defending the basket better. Cooper was amazing kept scoring taking the ball away and scoring again or passing to someone else to score.
Cooper started out rough shooting the ball But she was outstanding in every aspect of the game and no fouls.

Ruby Whitehorn looked unguardable tonight against some guards that are consider top tier in the SEC. Whitehorn is playing like an All-SEC caliber player.
Talaysia Cooper is elite. One of the most complete players in WBB.
Samara Spencer tonight received a lot of praise from the announcers. They mentioned her as an All-SEC PG.
This team has the talent to beat any team in WBB.
Hollingshead, Latham, Darby, and Boyd are players I’m really impressed by how they step on the court and give effort possession after possession.
This team has one of the best benches in WBB.

I didnt realize UT after Vandy has 4 out 5 games against top 7 teams. Wow. In no order SC and UCONN at home and Texas and LSU on the road. CKC won't have it easy with a newborn, wow.
We drew one of the very hardest SEC schedules this season with LSU being our two game opponent. Texas got SC twice so they drew hard schedule as well. having UConn in there just makes it one of the toughest stretches any team anywhere will face this season.

One of announcers said that CKC determines the starting lineup based on player practice performance. This was a habit of CPS. I wish CKC would adopt CPS's stong empasize on defense. Because of their stong offense, the LVs can defeat any team if they hold the opposing team to 80 or less points.

I think Kellie is just very new at the TV analyst thing and needs time to get over the new-job nervousness, which was likely compounded tonight by the fact she was discussing Tennessee. She, like all the other former Lady Vol professional analysts, was trying extra hard to appear to not favor Tennessee.

Kellie deserves a grace period to grow into the job and lose the nervous pauses and such. Except for Andrea Carter, I have never seen a new analyst who did NOT sound and look a little awkward at first.

I think she'll be good with more appearances. 🧡
I noticed Nikki was tilting hard toward Mississippi State’s necessary approach to get back into the game. Trying to keep those Bulldog fans on the channel. It’s their job. 😉🤙🏼

Wow, this was a hard game. Several of the players up there game for a team win. 3-2 in the SEC. 15-2 overall. As always go Lady Vol’s.
State has some good talent and an excellent coach and played the LV even in the 2nd half...... the three 3 pointers in last 30 seconds in 2nd quarter were the real difference in the game. Good game by LV's Miss state played great defense most of the game .

Carter is really good. Acts like she was born to be an analyst. She will be around for years.

I think MSU might be one of the best teams we beat with only FSU possibly being better. So, nice to win by double digits. Finally, a large majority of our three-point attempts were from our 3-point specialists Spencer, Jewel, and Darby. The great shot selection here resulted in one of our highest percentages in 3 point shooting against a good team. The drive and penetrate specialists - Ruby Coop, and Spearman- mostly stayed in their best lane. This was needed given that MSU's defense is really good. I was stunned by how poor we rebounded in the first quarter (the center of MSU got 9 rebounds in that quarter!) but we really turned it around the rest of the game with almost a 2:1 margin in offensive rebounds. Defense is still a work in progress, but this team is definitely improving.
