Game Thread Lady Vols vs Mississippi State

Absolutely right on, VOL270. With good coaching, I believe the LVs could have had a 25-4 regular season won-loss record instead of a 17-12 record.

You have to go back over 30 years (82-86) to find a span of four consecutive years with more losses. During that span in the early 80's, the Lady Vols lost 38 games. We currently have 33 losses. This is the second worst span in Lady Vol history.

My question is this. How do the lady vols get back to winning national championships? Uconn is not going anywhere, period. They are what we use to be in the 90's. Now, instead of being the 2nd best team, we aren't even a top 25 team. It's been a slow fall and I'm not sure we even saw it unfolding through the years. This started way before coach Summitt's career ended. Instead of getting that new spark, we kept it in the family which doesn't always help. The lady vols program is like the fastest most luxurious sports car in the world. Coach summitt drove it fast and loud, but as everyone knows, the older we get the slower and more cautious we drive. Her time unfortunately ended and she gave the keys to a new driver. Instead of putting the most deserving and upcoming younger driver (and no I don't mean teenage) behind the wheel, we put another older slow driver in the car. And to beat it all, the new driver was taught how to drive fast a long long time ago. We have the car that everyone wants to ride in, we just need a better driver to guarantee the he/she can win the race as expected. And that may be really crazy sounding, but that's just how I'm seeing it now. We need a new coach (driver) and assistants (pit crew). We already have the best car.

To bad it's a Buick

The way the LVs get back to winning NCs is to hire a new head coach. We've seen what this one can do.

We lack a true point guard, a true point guard that knows how to run a team will know how to use and manage the clock.

It's our system--it sux. We dribble far too much and pick and move and pass far too little. We are not a loose offensive team. More to the point, relative to our talent, we are probably the most underachieving offensive team in the country. When you struggle consistently to get to 50, you have serious problems. ND and UConn are in the 80s regularly.

Appears so at this point. I mean our established brand in general is the "car". New driver and pit crew may make the difference in who wants to ride and who actually rides as passengers (players). But yes, at this point it appears to be a Buick driven by my granny on her way to bingo with the girl scouts.

Ugh this was an ugly game... Now I will say the refs whistles were a tad silent tonight Bash and Jaime should've been at the charity a couple of times but hey they would've missed them any.... Just let this be season be over with already

Every time we lose we blame the coaching did we do this to pat no we wouldn't dare.. Holly keep running plays for diamond and shar they could not by a basket and fatigue set in

Hello Lady Volnation. I have never posted before, but I'm gonna give my two cents. There are several problems that live within our program. Holly seems to repeat herself in interviews and says the same ole stuff. Remember the grind for nine theme last year? Whatever happened to that? As far as the players role, Diamond is the best offensive threat we have. She's so versatile and has been the most consistent out of anybody. Basharra has really not lived up to expectations since freshman year. I really think that if she would be a little bolder to have developed that three two years ago, boy could that open the paint up more. Mercedes seems to timid, almost like she's afraid to get physical with other players. There's no sense of urgency to box out, as proven today vs state. Also another one of Mercedes' weaknesses is the inability to hit the free throw line jumper. If she had the consistent ability to pop out at the high post and shoot that shot, it would allow the paint to become more open. I feel like Draya was much more offensive minded last year and even her freshman year than she was than this year. I also feel like Middleton doesn't really do much for our team. She supposedly a three point specialist, but she hardly ever attempts a shot from the outside. Jordan is best when she runs point and attacks the basket. We've got talent, but we lack consistency. Jamie reminds me a lot of Cierra Burdick, but what drives me insane about her, is when she attacks the basket, instead of actually trying to hit the shot, she worries too much about them calling a foul and throws up a wild shot hoping the refs will call the foul, which 90% of the time they don't, this results in an embarrassed looking play and two points the other way. Also what I've noticed is that there has not been a consistent team leader this year. Every team has to have a leader, one they can call upon game in and game out. You'd think someone like a senior or upperclassman, but it seems to always be a different player every time, which I feel is not good. Lastly, when we were down by 9 with 3 minutes to go, why did holly not put in kourtney Dunbar to possibly get us more chances to pull closer? She hit 3 in a row when we played Texas a&m earlier this year. I'm also worried about who gonna fill our post next year, especially now since jasmine jones is leaving.

Nared needs to learn to shoot on balance. She looks like she's falling forward, sideways, and rotating 45 degrees whenever she shoots in motion.

She has done this all season, as either she or the coaches have decided that she needs to start driving to the basket this year. It wasn't quite as obvious tonight, but if you watch her closely it's because she leans back as she shoots - even though she is moving laterally. So when she comes down, her center of gravity is behind her feet. She leans back to avoid getting her shot blocked because, even though she's 6'2", she's not much of a jumper, which is why she still gets her shot blocked so frequently even with the (awkward) fadeaway component. I guess it's a positive overall, but it doesn't fly against teams with length.

ND and UConn have " players". Who on this LV team would you consider a " good" shooter? I can't name one player. This is collectively the worst shooting team ever assembled in Knoxville. And we have two post players that can't post up and make a layup or hook shot. Not a lot of offensive skill on this team.

Due to our so called system we have been drilled by a bunch of LSU walk ons, Miss. St twice, Alabama the dregs of the SEC, Va. Tech one of the weaker ACC teams, Arkansas wow, and Florida. Our system also gave up a ten point lead to Texas A&M with a minute and a half left in the game.
This is our system and that is why every coach in the SEC has Holly's back hoping she can remain head coach at Tennessee. They have never had this kind of opportunity to beat Tennessee before. With Pat it was always a beat down so they are hoping they can keep this going as long as possible.

Pat never lost this much, especially with a well stocked team. If she had, there would have been criticism.

I swear I woke up in the middle of the night hearing the sound of dribbling? Are Carter, Reynolds, Cooper and Middleton still going at it? I've never seen a team so clueless, so enamored with dribbling the ball, so prone to bad shot selection, so afraid of their collective shadows AND so poorly coached.

This program needs a complete overhaul, from top to bottom. Holly must go and if not, Ms. Law and Dean have to be shown the door. They contributed nothing but chaos to the guards and post players. Elzy did a decent job with her defensive acumen, but she's never had a clue about shooting or offense. Same goes for Holly. This staff needs an infusion of bright, offensive minded assistants ... and a coach with solid skills for teaching fundamentals. Holly has become lazy, entitled, tentative and completely inept.

The one time Holly should have been free flowing with her substitution patterns was last evening. This is how clueless she has become. How do you not inject some offensive firepower with Dunbar and on-court energy with Jackson. Inexcusable how poorly Holly coached this team last night. Bash was so exhausted she couldn't hit a free throw if the basket were two feet away and 60" in circumference! Unreal.

Can't Holky tell when one of her players is tired, overly frustrated or both? No.

Holly must go and the fear of Donald Trump being our next president should be instilled into each Lady Vol. if you want to represent this pioneer program, work your individual tails off this summer, OR don't bother coming back. I'd rather have a ragtag bunch of hardworking walk-ons who want to wear the Orange, White, Blue and Gray with pride than a bunch of so-called high-school All-America underachievers.

I don't care what seed or region we're in, this team at most is two and done, possibly one and finished! I'm ready for the misery to end ... right in time for spring ball.

Welcome to the board. :hi:

I really believe if these ladies had better coaching and an offensive system, they will be amongst the Elite.

Elite: three is UConn
Next level USCE and ND
Then everyone else

Would love a new coach to right the ship.
