Game Thread Lady Vols vs Mississippi State

We ran out of gas holly keep running plays to diamond but the shots she hit yesterday was not going down and we started playing one on one exactly what they wanted.. And Mercedes is just soft she got pushed under the rim

they did look tiered,I was wondering why CHW wasn't subbing in like she usually does this game,it was probably one they could have used more of it

If you think this was a frustrating year, just wait until we have to go through another year with Holly at the helm.

Just because they were All Americans in High School doesn't mean squat. Outside of DeShields, I see a bunch of overrated players. Name me one that looks like she is worth her ranking coming out of high school. I just don't see much talent and think people need to stop blaming Holly unless it's for not doing a good job of evaluating players coming out of high school. Carter, Cooper, Russell, Nared, all of them are average players at best

I hardly ever post and you can say what you want but it's def coaching...this team takes 15 sec. to get the ball down court and another 5 to recognize what defense they are facing...which leaves our h.s all americans enough time to go one on one and just throw it up...or make that great pass at their teammates foot and back...the weakest bunch of women in the sec...I could teach rats to recognize defense faster...maybe she's been hanging around coach barnes too much...but this was a banner year for anyone playing us...

We lack a true point guard, a true point guard that knows how to run a team will know how to use and manage the clock.

I have made this point from day one Graves can get you rebounds but vs a team with size in the post she has problems with getting good shots. How many wild shots did she just throw up. And as for Cooper and Reynolds just flat out liability`s straight up.

Andraya Carter is in that group, too. Sometimes she surprises with some shots made but she is not dependable. Also, she is the dribbling queen of the universe so there's that. Holly just loves watching Draya dribble-dribble-dribble that basketball. Liability, indeed.

well we won't be in South Carolina's bracket....and well that's the only top seed I could maybe seeing us beat....I wonder what team will be the 9 seed and our first round matchup be???

The team's schiity season which caused them not to get a bye is why we lost the game. Having to play three straight to get to the championship is tough.
We can make all the excuses we want, tired, refs, announcers didn't like us, wrong day of the week, ugly shoes, etc. it all comes back to terrible coaching. No excuse, just fact.

Bashaara Graves battled hard under the boards...but she is only about 6'1" and not 6'2" or so as listed on the roster. She is definitely undersized as a post player. Her free throw shooting was really off tonight...as well as the rest of this team. The one on one, selfish, ragged offense started early in the game, Cooper at times seems to think she is the ONLY player on the court, very undisciplined, but a freshman, so there's still hope, with proper coaching...ugh. I saw a 5'2" midget getting rebounds under the LV basket...and shooting and scoring at the other end of the court over 6'6" Mercedes Russell. 27 per cent shooting for the game...27 freakin per cent! Add the barely 50 per cent from the free throw line...and you have exactly what you deserved...a big, fat, loss! Meanwhile, Holly, at least in post game pressers after the first 2 tournament games, throws players under the bus. An average coach would have guided this team to a really good season...no more than 4-5 losses...Holly is not an average coach...

So, Miss St just has much better players and coaching had nothing to do with it? Get your head out of the Holly sand.

Vivians was the best player on the court tonight by far. Deshields is the ONLY Lady Vol player that can create her own shot.

Nared needs to learn to shoot on balance. She looks like she's falling forward, sideways, and rotating 45 degrees whenever she shoots in motion.

She does need to work on fundamentals. The promise is there, but she really hasn't progressed into the player everybody thought she would be. She's had a disappointing season. If anybody transfers, it could be Nared.

Welcome to the Land of Mediocrity. The Middle Class. Where an upper half of the conference standings is a good year, and the lower half is a down year. Where you'll win most of the games you should...usually, and a handful of games you shouldn't (some of which will become legendary over time. Just think in 20 years we will all look back and remember that one time we beat South Carolina!) and lose a few that got away from you (the refs had it out for us that day!).

I promise I'm not trying to be argumentative and I agree that being an All American out of HS doesn't mean anything. Sometimes an All American turns out to be a bust. But, I just don't think it's possible to have this many All Americans bust. At some point, it all boils down to coaching. I have always been supportive of Holly so this isn't a 'bash Holly' post but it really does all come back to her not being able to take the talent she's had come in and make them even better.

Wonder who's going to take the spot of laying & wallowing on the floor? Holly has some tough decisions to make before another declining season, trying to stay out of last place.

Dang man if we're a 7 seed I don't see us beating any of the 2 seeds either......smh

Well...7 is better than eight. They have already beaten Oregon St, Ohio State had a bad loss today, and Texas looked bad against Baylor.

I see this team getting destroyed by all four one seeds as an eight seed.

I would think any decent coach would be ecstatic having 7 all americans on their team, are we saying Holly can only coach walkons? Being a highschool all american does not mean you are an automatic star in college, just that you have a greater potential to be a star. A good coach helps to reach that potential. I see no development at all here, regression actually, therefore, bad coaching.

I really believe if these ladies had better coaching and an offensive system, they will be amongst the Elite.

I will end with this, Great players can make a bad coach look good and bad players can make a good coach look incompetent. Holly coached 2 teams to an Elite 8. She either had Great players or obviously knows how to coach. Maybe we don't really know the answer yet. However, I only see one player on this current team that is even an above average SEC player (Diamond D.). Other than her, I haven't seen what I would call Lady Vols talent. Until I do, I will stand by my opinion that this team is full of overrated high school All Americans.. Case in point, Russell was the # 1 player in America in High School. Do you really think that she is that good? I don't think she could start on half of the SEC teams. She plays as though she has concrete in her shoes. She is horrible.

The LVs are unlikely to make the Elite 8. If they can't beat MSU to get to the SEC final, they're going to have an even tougher game against any of the 2 seeds. Playing Texas in Austin sounds like a quick one and done... especially after the belly flop tonight.

Agree 100% on Russell. She absolutely has to get tougher.

she would be great if she could get that hook shot in the basket more

and a team that would be able to get her the ball, with out a turn over

plus she should never be around the free throw line, either on defense or offense, unless she is going to do a fake and a dribble drive to score :)

I do think she would start at more than half of them

Absolutely right on, VOL270. With good coaching, I believe the LVs could have had a 25-4 regular season won-loss record instead of a 17-12 record.
