Game Thread: LADY VOLS VS. OLE MISS

We had a chance to put this game away early. But subbing when there is no need to hurt.

Strange game. Alot of good stuff happened. Rennia awoke for yet another double double. We only had 11 t.os and 21 assists! Jordan had 7 assists and only 2 t.o.s, Jaz had 8 rebs, 6 assists and only 2 t.o.s, Key had 17 pts and Rae 14. Everyone played alot. Ole Miss wasn't awful and hit lots of 3s to keep it from being the blowout we expected.

For some reason, none of the good stuff made me feel much better about our chances of beating Auburn Sunday.

Had to tonight. No need to play our starters heavy minutes. Also one of the few games she could actually get reserves good minutes. Once you get more than 6 deep we drop off.

Some of that was intentional imo. It appeared they were basically told to guard the paint. Props to ole miss for hitting some threes. This game was never in danger though.

We played a lot of reserves and saved some legs.
Yes! It felt like exactly that. KJH wasn't going to let us lose, but was going to treat it kind of like an exhibition or scrimmage. Probably didn't count on Ole Miss having the 3 pt shooting night of their lives. She sure seems to favor that strategy and has been coaching way longer than me, but it seems like that approach just doesn't work when we play better teams and need extended good mins from our starters,

No excuses for giving up so many threes (although Ole Miss shot over 30 of them), defensive lapses, missed bunnies, etc.

But before holding a match to those mattresses, consider that Alabama only beat Ole Miss by 1 point...the same Alabama team that just knocked off A&M.

Hopefully, our hosses can stay out of foul trouble against Auburn, and Kellie can keep scorers on the floor and use the bench sparingly.

carter shot TA&M out of the game ! She just kept on shooting and missing!

So my takeaways:

Cons:
1. Why were we worried about their post players? We sagged in the paint several times, and left wide-open shooters. No need to have done that. Our post players are stronger than theirs.

2. Defense was lackadaisical many times this game. It may have worked this time, but against the stronger teams, we can’t afford to do that.

3. Why do our players always go under the screen!? I’m blown away how many times we fall for that, and let the guard have a wide open shot. We have to go in front of the screen.

4. We lose Brown and Harris after this year. It’s always sad to see players go.

Pros:
1. The silent assassin, Rennia Davis, did her thing as usual! That 3 was fire through the rim at the end of quarter 3! Double-double machine!

2. Tamari came in a did work! Much bigger night offensively for her, but boy did we need her!

3. Rennie came in and opened up the paint by knocking down those three’s!

4. Rae started us off so well and has been a catalyst for us offensively the last 7 games!

5. Lou took that charge with pride! She’s been the only willing player to successfully do that each game!

6. Jas did what she does best, blocked a shot, took care of the ball, and distributed the ball for assists!

7. Jordan came in, and while didn’t score a lot offensively, she played a very tamed, in-control game! She scored when we needed her too, she had the beautiful layup move down low, played tremendous sliding man-to-man defense, penetrated through the screen on defense, and was the only player I saw go over the screen and fight through it! She’s played a great past couple of games! She’s taken care of the ball and made smarter passes!

8. Kasi kept fighting for position, which I love, and she finished the few shots she had the chance to take!

9. Jaiden was doing all the little unnoticed things; deflecting passes, getting offensive rebounds and scoring on second-chance points, and is showing how tough she can be!

10. We only had 12 turnovers! 🤭 = 🤩

11. 21 assists! 😱 ... 😳 = 🥳

Conclusion:

In my opinion, the pro’s outweighed the con’s. It’s time to get the most determined we’ve been this year. We’ve been mocked, made fun of, ridiculed, backstabbed, you name it. We fans have to be constant through the trials. We must stand behind this team, now, and forever. It’s a new time now. Teams have surpassed our level, and are no longer afraid of our name, Tennessee. We must remind them of who broke open the glass door for Women’s College Basketball! It’s a new season folks, and the talent is there with these girls. We have ALL the weapons we need to be national champions for a 9th time! We’re a very strong team. I’m remaining positive and keeping my word from earlier this year. I think these ladies are going to win the SEC Championship! I don’t know how, and it won’t be easy, but the talent is too obvious. Once a Lady Vol, Always a Lady Vol! Let’s win this for Pat!

Go Lady Vols!

I'm glad Kellie didn't overwork the main group. But I hope she went in the locker room after the game and let them know that the effort was the worse this SEC season that allowed Ole miss to get comfortable and gave them confidence that they could just throw it up at the rim might go in.

Also for those this game you couldn't go over the screen when officials allow the screener to throw hip every time

She moved so much her screen was more of a fence...Elbows out on every screen, if she had any offense, watching her and KK was like a WWE match.,,,She had so many nicknames tonight:,,, Tank, Sasquatch, Screendoor,,etc

Well, I won't say Kellie has listened to my call outs about game management , which she improved calling late time outs, or stopping the stupid bounce knee level passes to post, I am not that type of person, but, dispute the opponent tonight, we actually improved on oassing, certainly getting higher post to paint, and I think Kellie respected ole miss and their players to not embarrassment them, but work on things we needed too. I like that. Surely we could have beaten them by 60 again like others, but she used this as a practice to work on what we do bad. Hats off to Kellie, Ole Miss has talent coming in, and a good coach, so I am glad we used them to improve, and not dominate. Ole Miss coach spanking davis was everything!
