We've cut down significantly on turnovers--12 tonight, 10 last night--after averaging about 20 for most of the year. That is big. We still have offensive issues. We still move the ball too slowly; we still struggle shooting threes, but there has been some offensive improvement. Graves had a good game--but she frankly has a weird offensive game. When you get the ball in the paint, and think you can score, you need to go up for the shot strongly and quickly--and be tall in doing so. Graves seldom does this. Maybe it's because she's gotten shots blocked over the years, not sure--but when she gets the ball in the paint, she actually often goes low and tries to dribble around defenders in the paint, get closer to the basket and score. She won't take the quick 6-foot shot but will try to get closer and take the 2-foot layup. She did this successfully at least three times tonight, but it's not fundamentally sound as it generally not advisable to put the ball on the floor in the paint. You can fumble the ball, the ball can be stolen, you can be doubled--bad things happen. I wish she wouldn't do it--but if it keeps working, I suppose one can't complain too much. She'd be a better scorer, however, if she just caught the ball, went up powerfully and shot--no delay, no fuss.
