Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas ; Thurs Jan 23rd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SECNetwork

How can she help the TEAM sitting on the bench? And, maybe she was told to try and NOT foul? I think she was smart to stay in the game.
Please! Late game action! The game on the line? You have to keep playing to win! I would rather foul out trying, than to give up an easy two points, so I can stay on the floor. Go Lady Vols!

Wasn't that toward the end of the third or near the start of the 4th? Regardless, still plenty of time left to play. And, had she hit that late 3, you'd be singing her praises.

On edit. It was like under 2 mins. left in the 4th. But, like I said... regardless.

You dumb.

An exact repeat of last year. 5 seed and lost to eventual FF team on their floor in the second round. In fact, alot of what's happened this season is an exact repeat of last season so far, in spite of alot of noise and style difference.

However, it really feels like this team will eventually break thru and get that big win. These agonizing close losses have been going on for several years and you have to think just the law of averages will catch up.

The LVs need one big win - maybe at LSU - and to avoid another upset like the Vandy game and to win at least 2 out 3 against KY, Bama, and OM to host. Tall order, but doable. And as we saw last year, hosting makes a huge difference.
I agree with the parallels between this year and last year. It feels so much to me like we are at intersecting paths but now the trajectory is up instead of down, based on recruiting and general momentum. Hope that's not all in my imagination, but it feels like they are on the cusp of a breakthrough going up instead of on the edge of imploding. I also feel like LSU is their best shot for a big win in this stretch. Morrow is tough but I stand by my opinion from before that game that they are generally over rated this year. Even a few games ago vs. them at home we were still getting beat over the top long way too frequently early on in games and that seems to have been cleaned up and corrected for the most part. A full game like last night with a focus on boxing out Morrow and that is a very winnable game.

Can't totally agree with this. This year we have 4 losses by a total of 8 points. Last year we lost 11 regular season games by an average of 11 points, including 5 losses by 14+ points. Still a lot of games to play but this year all of our losses have come to teams in the top 20 of the NET - last year we lost to 5 teams outside of the NET top 30. We're 11th at Massey (23rd last year), 9th at HHS (23rd last year), and 13th in the NET (30th last year).

Thank you for posting this. I just don't see how you can watch last year's team and this year's team and come away thinking they're remotely similar.

My biggest concern on the game was Spear's lack of anything. She didn't make a 3, no rebounds, defense was terrible. Why in the hell she was playing late in the game when we needed "somebody or something" to make a difference? Favor or even Ace or Edie could have given better effort than the big zero that Jewel did. imho
PS D Wells is a shooter too? give her a minute or 10...

So true Guile...Spear has gone into a scoring slump lately....

Spear keeps the defense honest - Texas focused a lot of defensive energy on stopping Jewel's 3s, which opened up the lane for players like Ruby and Spearman to go off like they did (IMO). I was also happy to see Jewel find ways to score driving to the basket when they kept denying her the 3. Her game has really grown a ton.

I know it’s what some posters do on here but my goodness it’s just outrageous to act like you have any idea of what the team will look like next fall.
Flat out comical.
Saying we’ll only have this player(s) at this height or size is ridiculous when next years roster for 2025-2026 won’t be finalized until this summer.
I’m 100% certain Coach Caldwell and her staff can complete their roster via the portal. Their 8-9 month track record is all that matters right now.
I wouldn’t think a ranked team with a coaching staff in year 1 that landed the incoming #1/#2 HS recruiting class would lack the ability to assess their needs.

My sister worked for Penn state for 32 years. She said the older ref called many of their games. Said he is awful.
To be honest I’ve not watched a whole Ladyvol game in years have watched multiple whole games this year. I say that to say never really paid much attention to the refs but that crew I have noticed is no friend to the ladyvols and somehow showed up in that game. Hopefully they won’t be doing South Carolina game that is tough enough as it is.

I agree with your comment. If we had made our FTs, we win this game and I believe we also would have prevailed against LSU, Vandy, and OK. We need a better FT% and get better board play. We have all the pieces. This team will be formidable before conference play begins. GBO.
Conference play began 7 games w.

Know your facts! You obviously have never played or coached basketball. In that case you try but she didn't. Film doesn't lie!!! Period!!!

The game was competitive and close despite the thought that it would not be.

At some point we have to figure out how to close on these games - in both this and Vandy we had the ball playing for the last shot for the win or tie. One game, we shot too soon. We probably did in this one as well though that is not why we lost. We lost because the shot wasn't made.

I don't fault the attempt to go for the 3 and the win - but if you are going to do that when trailing by two, just make sure the ability to secure the rebound with a miss is high.

We desperately need to win these close games against a top team when we have the chance. We just can't close the deal yet. We are probably looking at 9 losses on the year unless the team figures this out.

We have SC and UCONN at home - win both of those and all these close losses are forgotten. Lose both of those in the same way and we are a "close" with no reward for the effort.
