Game Thread Lady Vols vs. UNCG

Does that mean you see her capable of competitive minutes against SEC teams?

In short spurts, but not significant,,,yet....and I do say, yet!
Like Lou Brown, she was brought in to be a gunner, but to this point she had been passing up the opportunities
If she continues to work on footspeed and defense and begins to accept her role as a gunner
I can see her minutes growing, even in SEC play

In comparison, North Carolina beat UNCG 96-35. That’s what happens when a team shoots 56% from the field and 45% on threes.

They could have used some of that shooting today... Wake Forest took them to overtime today after beating them the first time they met.

Wake Forest was predicted to finish 12th in the league while NC was predicted to finish top 4.

That doesn’t take away their good shooting on that day though. Just goes to show how games a different from game to game.

NC does have a top 20 win over syracuse who just looked out of sorts will be interested in seeing how the rematch goes next week.

I also know people were complaining about playing this game and our schedule but Massey has upped our SOS to 97 while NC is at 237👀

Does anyone know with Massey if the SOS changes after each opponent you play if so i would assume both teams schedules will improve because of conference play while i think LV will improve more because of more ranked teams in the SEC

Massey had Tennessee winning by 40.

Did you mean missing instead of passing? She is 1-10 on threes.

I can’t see enough quickness or speed to allow you to play her. Just like the post injury Lou Brown wasn’t effective by her own admission. 21 has challenges there too but not to the extent of 10.

Sheesh, some of ya'll are taking the game today way, way too seriously. This was basically a B team scrimmage. I'm really glad alot of the bench players got extended minutes, sorry McCoy was not available to get some p.t.

I'm glad KJH is not Kim Mulkey and thought she approached this game with class. Glad she didn't grind them into the dirt, which of course, she could have. I'm sure it was a little difficult for the players to know how to approach the game, naturally they're not going to be locked in like they were playing for a natty.

I don't think much was lost or gained, just an op for a game. Would never have happened outside of the calamity that is 2020.

As far as players reading posts here, they shouldn't. She who fishes for insults is very likely to catch them. No one here has any special insight or knowledge that would make our criticisms or analysis helpful in any way. Definitely not worth your precious time as a student athlete.

If for some misguided reason our comments here provide motivation, that is best kept private. Under no circumstances should there be direct engagement with fans on social media. That never ends well, just ask Evina Westbrook's Mom.

All that said, I'm glad Emily is getting to play some. I'm sure she works as hard as anyone in practice and it was painful seeing her not even getting mop up time last year. Don't know if she'll actually contribute or not, but Lord knows, we need a miracle at post. I sure wouldn't leave any stone unturned looking for help, especially in a game like this.
Well said!!!!!

Her being out there should open up the post Now what Key and Kassi do with it is another story!

Post play is the weakest part of the team. Kk can't make a layup not a very good defender. Key can defend she gets tired easily needs a lot of rest probably 25 minutes is her max per game if she can stay out of foul trouble.

So far this season our posts play is only showing up on the opponents stat sheet. We have carried that forward from last season. We are holding teams best interior players to a tough night so far this season. Holmes at Indiana has been in double figures every game this season. Our defense held her to 6 points and 4 rebounds. She was a total non-factor against us and she’s their leader most nights. Berger also gets most of her points in the paint and had a very tough night against our size as well.

This is a great sign for us moving into SEC play. Coach Harper is exactly right though, they have to start impacting the stat sheet on the offensive side of the ball. We’re frustrating opposing team’s posts offensively, now we need to force them to play defense and score in their face. Complete the post transformation Coach!

Defenses have to defend the three with Burrell, Davis and Horsten so I don’t think getting space to pass to the post is a problem. You just keep one or two of those in the game at all times. But I agree, our post are all very limited and would not be a go to option for me.

There is no reason to compare one game to another. We shot terribly against UNCG not because they were a great defensive team because we just can't get going with easy ones around the basket. They only made 40 points and most of them were a girl having a career day shooting. I'm thinking after the games we've already played that we need to keep teams below seventy to have a chance to win and 60 to be almost certain to win. I really love the defense of Horston and Key. I like the way Walker plays defense. Burrell, Davis, and Suarez are ok defensive players not elite. KK is a weak defensive player from what I've seen. I think Salary will be good with playing time. Furman rated higher than UNCG not sure they are better.

So Volfan2012 are you saying that the starting lineup should be: Key, Suarez, Davis, Burrell, Horston with Walker as the 6th man or woman?

To me, it's not about our starters. It is how the subs play that will determine how the game flows and the season goes. Sure don't want to have the starters average 35 mpg.

I'm happy that Kellie has found minutes for everyone. Experience will help down the road.
The key will be how many minutes she trusts the bench with in more competitive games. She might narrow it down to those six plus KK.

Rickster, I understand certainly what you are posting. However, I think that it is the starters, not the subs, who determine how the game flows and how the season goes. Each starter should average 30 mpg. That leaves an approximate total of 50 mpg for the subs. That is more than enough time for 2 or 3 subs to make a significant contribution to a game.

Not just about what the starters average, but in games against good competition, they should be ready to play 35-40 min if it's a matter of 1-2 possessions separating a win from a loss. They can play the bench in the games that are out of reach either way, but I'd hope they keep their best 5 players on the floor as long as the outcome is still in question.

I get where you are coming from, but the in-game experience is needed for everyone. As the season goes on, one of the starters will foul out or be in foul trouble.

absolutely

if this were not the case, "starters" would have been an exception, not the rule

They have to hit shots though. That was the biggest difference in the game outcome at WV. Had we hit even 30% of our 3s against WV we would have been in business. We couldn’t buy a bucket from deep in that game. Hopefully the 3 pt. shooting becomes more confident and players just let it fly.

We’ve looked tight from beyond the arc for years because Holly didn’t want them shooting the 3 even when they made it. Coach Harper seems to want them to let it fly if they’re open which is a breath of fresh air. If Darby can get her legs under her she could be a real asset against a zone or sagging man. She’s clearly not afraid to shoot it and she has a nice stroke.

If we can’t get an easy bucket inside I’d much rather see a deep 3 with a chance at a long rebound. Better than a turnover trying to force it into the post when it’s not there.
