Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Vandy ; Sun Jan 19th ; Away game; 3 PM Eastern; SEC+

You may not agree but that’s a very likely scenario unless we wake up and play 4 quarters of actual defense. Playing like this we will not beat Texas, SC, LSU, Kentucky, Alabama, or Ole Miss and we will be in danger of losing to a team like Florida who can occasionally put a game together.

That’s 6 losses almost guaranteed and only 10 SEC games remaining. 7-10 is looking very likely. Sorry to say that but if you don’t beat teams like Vandy you’re not gonna beat the top half of the SEC.
No. it's not. LOL.

Let’s check back after this next 5 game stretch and see where we are. Because right now we’re 3-3 and with two losses to teams we had to beat to be in the top half of the SEC. Lose to OU and lose to Vandy and you’re going to be about .500.

Were in a heap of trouble with the next several games being against four top ten teams. After that we have a lot of teams we should beat Missouri, Auburn. Florida, Georgia, and hopefully we can handle Ole Miss and Bama at home. That would give us 9 and 7 in the regualr season and probably something like a six or seven seed in the NCAA Tourney.

The Grinnell System was invented as a 3-platoon system, and we were running it as a 2-platoon system through the non-con slate, and today we made it almost a 1-platoon system; 33/30/29/26/26 out of the starters. This loss has me seriously skeptical that running it as a pseudo 1-platoon system is viable. Go back to what was working, spread your playmakers out between platoon A and platoon B, and out-hustle the other team for 40 minutes.

Cooper playing 33 minutes of merely +1 plusminus basketball against Vandy is a sign of deviation from what got us to 14-0 just not working. If she's fresh, she's elite quality. If she's tired in the 4th, she's a mistake-prone player with a good drive and a good shot, but not *elite*.

Cooper should play less than 20 minutes in the first 3 quarters, and have enough in the tank to take over defensively and offensively late. I think we could be double digit plusminus with Cooper even in SEC play that way.

That's what I think, anyway. And a 1 point loss on the road in a game where we only made six 3s isn't as bad as it may feel in the moment. That's just basketball, sometimes the shots don't go in.

You make some interesting and valid points. But it’s also worth noting that what also helped make us 14-0 was a schedule far easier than an in season SEC schedule.

No, let's just go ahead and act like a child and freak out. LOL.

Basically, Tennessee fouls too much .... or they are being called for too many fouls, and it is to the detriment of their defense. However you want to look at it.

I also think they have the wrong personnel shooting too many 3's.

I am not freaking out, thanks. I’m factually stating a very likely scenario. Based on who we have and have not beat it’s highly unlikely we beat any of the top 10 teams we play coming up and very possible we drop at least 1-2 games to inferior teams like we just did today.

you’re freaking out a little bit. you’re calling it a done deal and saying the skies falling when the games haven’t been played yet. i usually enjoy what you have to say, but lately you’ve been so dang negative. chill girl, tomorrow is a new day.

Yep but most refs are scare to call that late in games. Doesn’t make it right.
Exactly. Refs didn’t cost them the game- they were Outplayed.

You see it in football, too. It’s not rt, but the game is usually officiated differently at the very end of games.

If you look at it that press has not affected the SEC Teams, yes Oklahoma had 31 turnovers but hey had went up by like 19 and still won the game. Like Mulkey said all you have to do is throw over the press and you have layup after layup, also TN is last in team defense percentage so.. when the 3s don't fall what is your plan B, also what is your defense other than the press, sometimes you have to switch up the D to throw teams off, press that dont work then its man to man which again they are last in team defense and guards blow by for lay-ups and no inside game to make them miss at the rim
Vandy didn't have many turnovers, 12 if I counted right.

I really thought (and posted) when Jewel hit those back to back 3s we would roll on from there. Just seemed like a ton of mental lapses It's true that Coop is esp prone to mental lapses but remember how new she is. She's halfway thru her first season of meaningful play. Not the wisest game from the usually reliable Spencer either.

Plus the awful shooting. We knew games like this would happen; records aside, Jewel's recent hot streak aside, we are just not a consistent 3 pt shooting team at all. No explanation for both teams missing SO many easy lay ups. It's an embarrassing bug of the women's game these days.

Vandy is a much improved team capable of pulling big upsets now and Shea Ralph is an outstanding coach and recruiter. She will be a good replacement for Geno if anyone can follow the legend and it can't happen fast enough for me. Out of the SEC. Also, obvs Blakes is the real deal. Vet play on that putback.

I'll never understand how or why people follow teams who they think randomly and purposely quit or "refuse to play". Our players are talented, but not enough to never have bad games or make mistakes. One of the hardest things to achieve is consistent focus and sharpness. None of them "decide" to play poorly on tv in front of the world. That's stupid, reactionary, and insulting.

First bad loss of the KC era. Some troubling trends involving end of quarter collapses, late game situational awareness, and the defense overall not looking good all. Still think the talent deficiency is the main driver. But I’m hoping to see improvement on these key areas as the season progresses
