Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Vandy ; Sun Jan 19th ; Away game; 3 PM Eastern; SEC+

Y'know, I do think that the team we were seeing in early November easily cleans LSU and Texas's clocks, so to speak. I feel like we forced as many jump balls in some of those games (particular C-N) as we hav in our previous 5 games, and the different was effort. We just aren't playing like we did at the start of this season, and I think we'd be undefeated otherwise.

It might just be unrealistic on my part to compare the team in early November to the team in January. Don't know.

The 2025 HS recruiting class put on a clinic this weekend at the Hoophall classic.
The current LV team can control their own destiny this regular season based on how they commit to competing in these upcoming games.
I hope they are up to the task.
I just decided to subscribe to NFHS network to watch the HS recruiting class games as every single commit contends for a state championship with Prawl and the Pauldo twins having a chance to play for a HS National championship.
In addition to these elite commits being leaders on and off the court they also will have a great opportunity to be named as McDonald All-Americans.
Lets go LVs finish strong and see you all in the SEC tourney.
Really excited about following the LVs highly ranked HS commits and watching their games for the remainder of the season on NFHS network.
GBO!

Her best recruit was on the bench for most of todays game for Vanderbilt

Poor Rickea don't get no respect.

Also, one of her recruits scored 22 against Vandy today.

Meanwhile, one of Ralph's best players (0ver 12 ppg and 9 rpg in 2023) was out with an injury today

Speaking of which, is Sacha Washington out for the season or projected to be back in time for the rematch? She's a baller.

I just can’t get over how much Vanderbilt women are acting like they won a national championship beating us by 1 on a shot that was a clear charge. I guess that means it still matters to a lot when teams beat Tennessee in any sport. I guess that’s a positive from it.
There was, uh, def some verbal sparring between us and a Vandy fan who wanted to taunt us with " 2 L's in one weekend." But, hey, they won in front of maybe the biggest crowd they'll see all season. 🙄

It's not our team that's changed so much from November it's the quality of the competition. The difference isn't effort, it's talent matchup. Winthrop doesn't exist on the same plain as LSU and even Vandy.L

LOL yeah I had to laugh about Justine being KJH best recruit when she recruited Rickea not once but twice. Again, the two exist on very different plains.

I think Washington is out for the year with blood clots. We're all too familiar with that.

Sadly, there will be no rematch this year for the first time in a long, long time. Unless we see them in the SEC tourney.

Rickea was bought and paid for. Justine was old fashion recruiting/evaluation/relationship. Different respect

Just got home from the game. It was an ugly game to watch. Here are my takes on the from being there. The officiating was so bad against us. The chubby short haired guy wanted to blow whistle against us everytime we had the ball. They let their point guard push off against our defenders all game and that last shot that went up from #12 was a flat out charge on Ruby. Same chubby ref was looking right at the play and didn't call anything. Enough about officiating. After watching the guys shoot so poorly yesterday and then girls today I understand why. The rims were so tight against the backboards you could have pull a bulldoze out of a deep mud hole with them. I know we shot poorly but I think the rims had a lot to do with so many missed shots. If the ball bounced any on the rim it was not going in. You had to have a very soft touch on shots close to the rim and on outside shots it had to go straight through the net without touching any part of the rim. Everyone talks about the floor layout but it was the rims for home teams advantage. Vanderbilt wanted to keep it a low scoring game and it works to their advantage. If you have ever played basketball you understand what I am talking about with the tight rims. This was a game we really needed to win with the upcoming schedule. Just did not happen today.

So honestly, does anyone know what the deal with Justine was? Was she asked to leave, decided with staff, or alone? And was she just super overrated out of high school. She has the physique to be a contributor. She seems to be a want to be involved and praised and play without the work ethic. Not bashing really., just curious if anyone actually knows the back story to her??

Rickea got paid a fraction of what she could have got at Texas/South Carolina/LSU. Her comfort with Kellie and Coach Sam along with her mother's friendship with Jordan's mom is what brought her to Tennessee and kept her here the second season. It worked out pretty well for her and now she's a WNBA star in L.A. Now we'll see if James Pierce lives up to his promise of buying a team for her.😂

Too bad she was injured for most of the non-conference schedule her last season.

Justine should be a lesson to those who base their opinions of recruiting success on high school 5 stars.

So she was bought, twice. Second one wasn’t that hard..how many said she would be making less going to the WNBA vs. staying here.

The last part is more of a reflection to the evaluation of the last staff and not the recruiting services. She jumped after the Tennessee commitment, not prior where she was around #30.

There was a point where one of our problems was that there was SO much effort in the press that we were getting rung up for fouls regularly. Contrast that to today where our press was so limp that we end the game with 5 steals. Only 5! And only 12 turnovers forced.

I'm sure that matchup means something; I mean, we went from 17 steals against Liberty to 6 steals against FSU the next game, even back in November. But when I look at highlights from those early games, it just doesn't look like quite the same team. THAT team wouldn't beat Vanderbilt by the amount it beat Samford or Newman, but I don't really think that team would hav lost to Vanderbilt, and I know that team wouldn't have only put 70 on the board; that team was playing with an identity, with character. And at the very least that team was entertaining, win or lose. [though neither Iowa, FSU, MTSU nor Memphis were able to pull that off, though all had a chance at it]

Or those who bask and revel in some unhinged vendetta rather than just following the advice from Frozen.
May have merit had I started the thread. So as I said, don’t be upset with those who knew the ending well in advance. That’s not a vendetta more common sense.

Just glad we scraped up the money to buy Cooper last year. Hate to think where we'd be without her this season.

We lost that game in the second quarter.
Bingo

They just swept two top 25 teams,,,this is their natty

I do. It had nothing to do with BB,,,and thats all I can say

Fair, the cupboard was left pretty empty by negligence.

NIL is not a problem at Tennessee and never has been.
I agree the cupboard was left pretty empty by multiple years of incompetence in recruiting that’s a fact.
The recruiting dominance by Coach Caldwell, Coach Tubner, and Coach Lazo in the past 8 months was just outstanding.
They just haven’t gel as a team which isn’t different from the previous teams despite having players in that system for multiple seasons.
Right now, Tennessee is competitive based on recruiting, talent, and the coaching staff implementing their system.
Some players such as Whitehorn, Boyd, Spencer, and Cooper are showing they have the ability to thrive in the SEC in this system. The staff hasn’t yet found a larger role for Latham.
The HS recruiting class has five players that can be as good or better than any player that has played at Tennessee since the Coach Summitt era.
CKC recruiting is better than NIL.

LOL! You know this how?

Caldwell and her staff would have gotten none of those recruits without the competitive NIL funds that they now have available.
