Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Vandy ; Sun Jan 19th ; Away game; 3 PM Eastern; SEC+

I have seen this team play twice now. Winthrop and yesterday at vanderbilt. I think the sub patterns have to be tweeked especially at the start of a game. The first 5 never get to break a sweat and slow their breathing down before they are out of the game. I see a little bit of frustration on their faces when they go off of the floor. Give them to the 5 minute time out before subbing. The second 5 group is not going to play as long as the first 5. At that point you can start mixing in your subs. Yesterday at times we had 5 on the floor that didn't need to be on the floor together. The best 5 are on the floor at the end of the game. I think they need to be on the floor longer at the start of the game to be able to get into a flow. I know as a player it took me a few minutes to settle in especially in a big game against a good team.

Interestingly, the top 5 players all got 30 minutes +/-. Looks like the lineup minutes are getting tightened.

This is a good analysis. I agree the substitution pattern to start a game does dictate the pace and flow of the game. I also think defensively there’s a need to play Ayodele.
I don’t understand how she isn’t getting minutes in the rotation when defense and rebounding has been the difference in a combined three losses by four points.

Point is if they're going to get those mins, normal starter mins, let them play some of them consectutively and get into a flow. Esp when they're not hard pressing and legs aren't an issue.

I don't think that's in CKC's DNA though, don't think she's much into flow.

I figured your self imposed ban for the rest of the season wouldn’t last a week. I was too generous, it lasted 17 minutes.

seems like "here we go again" would lead one to make a different decision this time. Why repeat the mistake if you recognize it?

Bottom line: consistency in focus, execution, and recognition are skills just like shooting and dribbling. Have to be learned and only the very best players perfect it. Esp hard for very athletic players who have always gotten by on superior athletic skills. But lack of these skills is not a conscious choice nor naughty behavior. Usually not correctable thru punishment.

Sugar high.

CKC has said that til she's blue in the face, except for possible practice performance.
you had me at "recognize it"

Also UTC, I wonder if the early season injuries are impacting Samara Spencer and Jewel Spear.
They have had their moments while playing but something seems off at times.
In particular with Samara Spencer her confidence was really high prior to the injury. I think she’s still trying to get back to form and just hasn’t quite gotten there.
It’s really ashame because before that Memphis game Samara Spencer was playing at an extremely high level.
I hope she can regain that form at some point in her senior season

If you read their body language they don't like it . Maybe reason they are not playing defense like they do in the second half. I think our talent level starts to drop off after the #7 or 8 players. At that time CKC needs those other players in spot roles. I like the idea of pressing and play full court defense and keeping fresh legs in the game. Just need the right 5 on the floor when doing it.

I agree with knoxvol52, you should just go ahead and change your screen name to avoid the embarrassment of not upholding your self imposed ban. You know, stand on business and all that stuff.

Don't worry about @KnoxLikeUs the poster can go change his screen name like others obviously have and come back as a villain..😎

You know this profile is too big to switch up. I’m just chatting facts today that’s all. About to watch two of the LVs elite 2025 commits later today on the NFHS network.
Not watching or posting in the upcoming Texas game thread.
I won’t be watching games or posting on any upcoming games until the SEC tourney that’s facts.
I’m confident the LVs will hold it down though.
I’m still very much impressed by CKC and her players.
Coop, Whitehorn, Latham, Boyd, among others they are very exciting to watch.
I’ll still post in the 2025 recruiting thread though. I haven’t followed them much until recently and after watching the Hoophall classic man it’s a reason Coach Staley, Coach Ivey, Coach Lawson, Coach Geno, and others wanted Deniya Prawl but she wanted to play at the historic Tennessee program and under the tutelage of the best young coach in WBB Coach Caldwell more.
It’s a reason Mya and Mia Pauldo, Jaida Civil, and Lauren Hurst were highly recruited. They just wanted the Lady Vols more.
GBO!

I’ll take that bet. It feels like cheating….

I agree. Subbing after 90 seconds does not seem to accomplish much. I think CKC likes the quick sub pattern just as much to disrupt the opponent but it also seems to have that effect on the LVs. Maybe 3-5 minutes seems like a good compromise.

I have stayed away from this thread because I assume a 3rd close loss (to Vandy no less) probably generated a melt down response.

That game was a perfect storm. Terrible shooting from 3 (3 for 20 in the first half) makes it remarkable that they stayed close, not to mention another high number of misses at the rim.

It was a heck of an effort to get the lead back in the 4th quarter. What is a little concerning is that level of intensity is supposed to be the 40 minute plan.

What CKC is seeing is that getting that level of intensity (against opponents who are capable of pushing back) is really hard and keeping fresh legs on the court does not magically lead to that outcome.

She is demanding an incredibly high level of mental focus. If she can get the team to this superhuman level, then watch out. But that will be no easy task.

I have to say Vandy did a good job in pressing and stressing the LVs, particularly down the stretch and they did not handle all that well. So, there is something to be learned from this loss.

In the end, this game really came down to one play here or there (as did the other two conference losses). Hopefully, fortune will start going our way very soon.

Yes!

When I played, even though I was a great athlete and a pretty good basketball player, I was ALWAYS nervous before every game, and it took at least five minutes before I stopped feeling like I was going to hyperventillate. My heart would race, and I'd quickly get out of breath and stay that way until I settled down. ALWAYS. I may never have enjoyed any success playing the sport if I hadn't had those first four to sometimes as many as six early minutes to catch my breath.

I have noticed a couple of players who may need at least four or five minutes to settle, too. I've never read any studies on that, but I can't imagine that being all that uncommon a phenomenon.

If I were Kim I'd try leaving the very first two platoons in for a full four (3.5 at a MINIMUM) minutes each, and from then on out go back to the 90-second pattern if that feels right. But give them time to get over the initial adrenaline/nerves rush so that they may begin to be able to focus for a bit before pulling them out. They can do it!

It's a strategy worth experimenting with once, at least. Not that she'll see this or any thread on here, but I wish she'd come up with that idea on her own and try it.

If you’re going to sub 5 players at a time every few minutes throughout the game then you need 10 players that are fairly close in ability with minimal drop off from the 1st to 10th. Otherwise, you have to keep some top players with lower skilled players in each group so you never really have a great 5 on the court together. I think that’s what we’re seeing in conference play and why the adjustment is being made. It’s a tough task to get a roster that deep and versatile but the first recruiting class seems to be a good start.

That's not me...Though I have chosen to no longer attend games due to what I perceive as a break from Summitt's traditions, I hope the Lady Vols do well. Because of the LVBHC, I got to know several players before the coaching change and want to see them succeed.

I only post when I see some clown like 'KnoxLikeUs' trying to denigrate Kellie and the previous staff with ridiculous statements such as "100%. NIL funds weren’t magically deposited into the LVs WBB account 8 months ago". I was very involved with the LVBHC and am keenly aware, despite Terri Holder's best efforts to raise NIL funds, that we were not competitive with our elite recruiting competition. The Volunteer Club got involved when Caldwell was hired and now makes the Lady Vols competitive in NIL funds to be in the conversation with top recruits.
