Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Western Kentucky

....I'm not ready to give up on JH... When Horston comes around and plays to her potential we will be formidable and deep on the perimeter.

Me either glv...and others

That kid can flat out play and she was obviously not 100% as @River67 said:

They were working on Jordan’s leg before the game started which I’m sure probably contributed to her slow start

it's been a long summer of some pretty fupped duck circumstances,,,let's take it a little easy on these kids out of the gate...I know in my game assessment I graded it pretty average, and for the competition we played, it was...But it was a win, as expected...and we had some very bright spots like Marta, JW, Destiny and one that surprised me most, and "under control throughout the entire game" Rae.

I am looking forward to Tuesday!
Hope you all are as well.

Good to know. Seemed like maybe she hasn’t been 100% in practice. She had a tough night but it seemed like her minutes were pre-destined to be limited. Hopefully whatever is going on with her leg is temporary. Noticed that she had gone back to the locker room before handshakes as well. Felt bad for Jordan last night, everyone else had a good opener she seemed so frustrated. Hope she knows how talented she is!

Don't judge any player on one game. The great thing about Jordan she realized what she did wrong on the plays that she made mistakes. She will come around big will play a lot of minutes at the one and the two this season. I think you can look for a big game from her against ETSU.

The one huge difference I see even though just one game we had 75 shot attempts to their 55. A plus 20. Last season in similar games against similar opponents the results were quite different. Against Tennessee State last season we shot 65 times to their 73 a minus 8. Against Air Force 62 shot attempts to their 71 a minus 9. Arkansas Pine Bluff 66 shots to their 66 even. I used these teams because they were terrible teams also and they were able to get up more shots than our team last season.
Plus 20 is awesome I hope this is the trend we will be on all season even is it is only 8 to 10 more attempts. The reason it is so important in basketball is that you can shoot a much lower percentage and still win the game. Getting only 55 shots and not getting to the line more than we did Western would've had to shoot over 60 percent to have the same amount of points that we had shooting 44 percent because we got 20 more attempts. Was a huge problem for us last year as almost every opponent was getting positive shots versus our attempts. Against UConn last year it was 56 to 73 a minus 17 shots. We shot 34 percent in that game to their 32 percent and lost by 15.
Of course it all comes down to steals, Orb's and turnovers. Those three categories where we were a total of plus 28 against Western yesterday. That is how you win games when your shooting is not as good as you would like. Also a way to lose a game when you are shooting well but the opponent is winning total shots by double digits even though shooting a lesser percentage.

Suarez will be a Grant Williams type steal. Looks like a leader already.

I may be in the minority, but she kind of plays like him.

In the women's game, I think the relevant comparison will be to Sabrina Ionescu, She has similar size, ball skills and court awareness. There is much work to be done but I can see Marta becoming an AA, game changing player in a few seasons.

Different sports but many would argue that the greatest women's soccer of all-time is Brazil's Marta so Ms. Suarez has a legenday moniker.

My concern with Jordan is not that she had a bad game per se in the season opener. It's that she had the same kind of "bad game" as last season. You saw highlight reel flashes of brilliance, like her lob pass to Tamari, and then unforced TOs, unnecessary charges and other bad decisions.

We can all see that she is supremely talented but that may be, in an odd way, part of her problem,. I think she has relied, over her still young career, on superior athleticism and some sharp ball skills to dominate games but maybe did not learn to read the game as well as one would hope. When you get to the college level, teams figure out to take-away those easy athletic plays, hence her charges into the lane and no longer being able to "thread the needle" between two defenders and so on.

Usually the "project player" label is reserved for those who need to improve their physical conditioning and strength over time (a bit like Key last season) but I think Jordan needs to develop what Marta seems to have already, a better understanding of the game and when to zig and when to zag.

For that reason, taking the PG responsibilities off her shoulders should be a big plus.

Massey thinks the Lady Vols are the 13th best team in the NCAA off 1 game lol why is he so high on us???
He is kind of off this season. Has Oregon number one which might be true but after what they lost unlikely. I think he is behind in getting the teams together according to their personnel. He has Western Kentucky listed as number 93 but that was with their full roster which they don't have right now.

Playing under control is the key word for her. She came in and immediately went out of control not in the team concept. She needs to take a lesson from Burrell who used to play out of control but seems to have conquered that obsession. As a result 18 points and 7 assists yesterday as she let the game come to her not try to do things that she shouldn't. You can't charge the basket against a slumping zone she did it twice and failed both times. Her basketball IQ still needs a lot of work took Burrell a couple years to get there may take Jordan that long also.

Marta & Junior Jordan are those kind of players that scores 30point a night, I just see it coming. Wish everyone will put effort like her.

Jordan has been under the weather and will be fine moving forward . This is why Destiny is playing some of the 1 and why JoJo was brought in. Let’s let Horston settle in at the 2 and do what she does . The last thing I want To see on here is everyone attacking Horston because she came out and didn’t play well in one game during a pandemic. She’s a supreme talent and we all know this . Most dramatic fan base I know . No one has to agree as this is a message board and we all love to give our opinions . Go Lady Vols, time for ETSU.

Jordan is the same old Jordan...Trying to impress. instead of just play!

So true, at least for this game....

She has to learn quickly not to try and force her will against double and triple team defenses....She just drove right into them...That type of "questionable play" can undo everything Kellie has implemented with this squad; teamwork, not hero ball.

Keep in mind that no one knows the health of these players...i mean up until,,, @GameTime (pun intended)
we had no idea Tess wouldn't play and we don't know if there are any lingering off-season issues for the others.

Just as I am not going to jump on the first game bandwagon for Marta/Destiny/Jo,,, nor am I convinced Rae has fully exorcised her control-demons and I am also not going to judge the veterans on one game. We won...we had things we did good and things we didn't do so good. we had some shining players and they freed Emily for a few minutes

Lets take this thing one "Game (at a) Time"

As I've said before, Horston is this team's Guarantano. She is arguably the most physically talented player on the roster, her issues are entirely from the neck up. Until she figures it out, if she ever does, I hope Kellie will continue to keep her on the bench and limit her minutes...

In her defense, she got a couple of really tough calls. I thought the WKU player was in the circle on at least one of the charges. The other ref got it right later in the game but the guy wasn't very good who was nailing Jordan. WKU defended Jordan hard all afternoon (and Jessie too). Jordan ultimately was injured and had to go out (favoring a leg or hip). WKU played a defense kinda like UK. They were physical and got away with a lot both inside and out. They were daring the whistle (that came rarely). I got the impression that they were very accustomed to defending the perimeter. Our game out top was covered. The foul line extended was open a lot for some lucky high post but we pressured instead of popping from the line. I thought we would play a faster tempo but who can argue with a 40 point win that felt like a 40 point win for the most part.
