Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Western Kentucky

In Green's defense she was open several times on the Block and they never got her the ball. I wouldn't base what she can provide us off of a game where it was clear they were trying to showcase RD, Rae, and Marta. A lot of those rebound RD got her and Green had their hand on it and Green let her get them as well.

When they did get it to her she got absolutely mugged by WKU. Being a bit undersized that was tough for her.

Why would they want to showcase Marta instead of Green? I think from the get-go, Marta just played more aggressively and the team fed off that. I don't really remember Green doing much out there, tbh. But the season is young...

When I say showcase I mean get her more involved offensively. She was often the 3rd scoring option in the offensive sets.

I would say that four starters are looking quite solid. Davis, Suarez, Burrell, and Walker. I'm not really sold on Green as the five think Key and KK give us a better lineup especially against the big centers we'll be facing soon. Horston will still play a lot of point I believe even though Salary had a big game today it will get harder against some teams in the SEC and may need Horston in there more with Walker. The game we played today won't beat Texas but we can play a lot better and have a couple games before we get to them.

Western Kentucky vs. Tennessee - Box Score - November 28, 2020 - ESPN

Looking at the stats a poor shooting game overall. The big key was plus 20 on shot attempts. There were not many game last season when we shot the ball more than our opponent. This game 75 shots to 55 if you can just get that differential and shoot a fair percentage you will win. Horston 0 for 6 today that want happen very often. The bench overall 11 for 29 from the field.

The starters shooting 48% is good; 31% from 3 is also ok. The reserves were not as good.

Horston has to do better.

Rennie didn't do much on paper but her defense was better and wku was really respecting her shooting ability which opened things up for the rest of the offense.

Also 13 steals I don't think we had 13 steals against anybody last season. I don't think we had 100 all season.

Jordan Walker got hands on a ton of balls today. She is an excellent addition to the team. She looks like she has more gas in the tank than even what she showed today.

He's probably about to, soon as another poster tells us again that Jordan Horston is going to be a four-time All-American and better than Chamique.

So good that she will be so good that she will win AA honors twice in one year!

All kidding aside, I'll think she'll be fine if she stays away from PG duties as much as possible. She's got the tools to be a really good SG.

Except for the shooting part. She's more like a 3 imo.

The Good: Strong performances by some of the newcomers, namely Salary, Walker and Suarez. Burrell had a nice stat line and played under control. Overall, good ball movement and flow on offense. Suarez and Walker both had some pretty assists. Aggressive play under the basket by Kushkituah. After a sluggish 1st quarter, the team stepped on the gas pedal for the last 30 minutes and didn't let off.

The Bad: Awful WKU team, so it's hard to take away a lot from this game. Green mostly invisible...I thought she would be more of an impact player. Poor FT shooting. Too many turnovers against a bad team, but they were playing fast on offense and it didn't cost them, so that's not the worst situation.

The Ugly: Offensive fouls from Jordan Horston plowing into set defenders (offense ran better when Walker was running point). Jessie, Saunders and McCoy didn't make the most of an early season cupcake.

Overall Grade: Solid B
To be fair, according to the stats, Emily played 4 minutes, and in that time, scored 3 points and got 5 rebounds. She was playing hard. Don’t know how much more she could have done in 4 minutes.

I think Horston may have physically developed herself out of the point guard position. She looks more like a two or three to me much bigger and stronger than last season. She has to learn not to be so aggressive to the basket when teams are in the zone to many players than can step in and take a charge. I would like to see her do more posting up and paint jumpers stop trying to get all the way to the basket when teams are zoning.

I think you’re right. She is much bigger now.

Jordan Walker developing into a capable point guard might be what saves this season. Despite the insistence of our genius "coach" Horston definitely ain't it and never will be...

Pretty clear her main issues are still fouling and conditioning. Her foot speed just isn’t up to snuff for any extended period of time. She blocks shots great up top but she isn’t agile enough to get her body out of the way. She can give us some good limited minutes against teams with size I think. Especially in the second half once the opponent is a little tired. We actually have some depth this season!

What I like most of all about the play of the ladyvols today was their ability play consistent and not down to the level of competition. In spite of the first quarter.

Agreed. Horston and that off balance shooting needs to change.

The player that looked the best today was definitely Rae. She played a controlled game...Marta played an inspired game and a very versatile game and Destiny salary picked up the tempo of the entire team on every play she was in. And Jordan Walker was a very pleasant surprise..

Other game notes:
We were trying to out rebound them using athleticism instead of boxing out. Most of our rebounds were snags, not due to position via boxouts...We gave up way too many open looks if they had been knocking down shots, the score have been much higher easily in the 60s for Western Kentucky...KK looked looked much more fluid than she has in the past seasons... Jordan H. looked slow today...I did not see the Jordan today that I saw all of last year the closest thing to the Jordan of last year,, was Destiny... Rennia Davis did not look like an All-American. If she is going to maintain her position on the list of preseason people to watch, she will have to visually exert herself a lot more...As far as coaching; adjustments were made between the first and second quarter the intensity and play was little bit better,, but they did not maintain the intensity and focus throughout...there were at least two quarters that I can remember when we had four or five fouls to give with 3 to 4 minutes left and we did not utilize those "fouls to give" by pressing or working on something in which we could waste fouls without harm. We've got to utilize opportunities to grow in areas we need to grow in... Turnovers I don't think we had double-digit turnovers not sure check this...

stats:
we shot overall 33 for 75, 44% (grade c)
6 for 22 3 pters = 27% (grade c)
free throws 15 of 24 = 62% (grade c)
rebs 56 to wku 32 (grade B+)
turnovers 13 (grade A-)
Overall grade: B-

Coach Jumper's prediction: Lady Vols 88 Hilltoppers 45
Actual score: Lady Vols 87 Hilltoppers 47
