Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Western Kentucky

Pretty good win for the Lady Vols. Marta Suarez was a pleasant surprise. Just keep on winning Lady Vols.
Horston still has the bad habit of trying to run through defenders for a lay-up. I wish she'd stop that.
I'm impressed by the margin of win. The girls played really good today. Who's next??

Great opening victory. This team more than anything else has depth and options at all positions so practice should be good. Yes many things to get better at each game should be a building block. Now I see why Coach talked so much about Marta she has skill and is Savvy. Walker the calming presence at the point and smooth. In CHRIST Alone.

Watching the post game and Jordan Walker said she found out she was starting 8 minutes before the game. Might have something to do with how our two PGs played 😬. If that was a test from coach Harper JH did not rise to the occasion. Hoping it was a one off thing and she comes to play Tuesday.

Did someone really say that about Horston? Surely they were not serious.
New around here, are you?

I'm not ready to give up on JH. The difference in Horston and Walker today was poise and decision-making. I'm disappointed that JH continues to struggle in those areas but thank the basketball gods that Walker apparently does not. When Horston comes around and plays to her potential we will be formidable and deep on the perimeter.

So interesting that JW didn't know she was starting until just before the game. Good Instinct coach and great response Walker. Please don't let us down after such a promising debut.

I don't generally read too much into the first game, especially against such an overmatched opponent. But in this case, I think who didn't start, and the body language of certain players, was very telling...

not y'all dumping Jordan H out the window already😒..it was ONE bad game lol we all know how well she can play and this ONE game doesnt prove anything but a slow start🤨

Certainly not dropping her. She’s an incredibly talented player. She had a tough night. Hoping she’ll come back stronger in the next game.

felt that her body language could've been better but we all get frustrated so im not gonna judge.... I expect her to keep it pushin and be an impact player on Tuesday

She was pressing a bit. WKU obviously discussed setting up for the charge in the scout. She’s looking at the pass and not the defender. Those plays mentally take her out of the game. She’s got to start pulling up. Once you get a reputation for charges the officials are quick with the whistle.

We know we’d rather have her on our side than have to play against her and she has shown what she can do. Now she just has to do it more consistently and give us our next All American type player after Re is gone or h3!! if she wants to kick it in now i wouldn’t mind !

So you are reading into the first game😂 i actually get a kick out of these now 😂😂😂

Okay, I know making big extrapolations from an opening game, against an overmatched opponent, is Fool's gold but dang it's so nice and shiny:

Marta is going to be the next Sabrina Ionescu (barring injuries etc). It will be maybe 2 seasns until she plays at that game changing elite level consistently but she has the X factor-- great skill set, very smart with the ball, has a feel for the game and good enough athleticism. I think her lateral quickness will need some work but she has good physicality.

Jordan Walker looked GOOD!

And Destiny Salary showed some nice skills and great athleticism

A bit surprised that two key (no pun intended) from last season have been pushed down the rotation-- Tamari and Jordan H. Key looked pretty good in her minutes but maybe there is some conditioning issue in play. I would imagine as the season progresses she will again become the teams main player in the point.

KK played well but we saw last season, she always pretty good against undersized teams but struggled mightily when matched up against size. So, we will have to wait and see if that problem has been solved or not.

Rae is gonna have a great junior year.

Impressed with Rennia-- realizing that she is surrounded by more scoring talent, playing in the flow and hitting the boards.

Overall depth looks much better this season obviously but these early signs are that the new additions may be big upgrades over last year's depth players. I won't name names but I can envision 3 or 4 players who may see get minutes in these early games but won;t feature when the conference games kick in (again barring injuries and covid-19 cases).

After the first quarter, the offensive flowed pretty well (and some lay off rust is to be expected)

Less positive:

I am not crazy about the KK and Tamari combo. Fine for a game like this but would not fare well against better comp.

I am little worried about Jordan Horston. He role on the team is not so clear. I am sure Kellie will figure that out but the way she was used in this game does not look a promising one.

Though Jordan had her struggles today, her lob pass to Key was a thing of beauty :)

Pretty good win given all the circumstances that lead up to the season opener.

Both Marta and Walker were impressive. I’m so glad Walker will be in Orange for two seasons. We need a steady, composed presence at the PG position. Long overdue. I hope they continue to bring solid contributions to the team!

Rae is only going to get better. I’m excited about watching her this season. She’s a player who gets buckets, and could be a go-to player for this team. As for Rennia, I’m wondering if she’s going to make that jump to All-American status this season. We shall see.

I’m still hoping to see better offensive production in our post play. Who’s that player that’s aggressive, hits the bunnies, finishes through contact, and has a nice touch around the basket?

I’m hoping Horston can clean up the turnovers and find a solid role. Her role might have be redefined. If we’re going off this game alone, she may need to shift to the 2 or 3. We need Jordan. She has SEC experience and has played in big games. I want to see her live up to her #2 ranking. It could take this team pretty far, I think.

Kellie seems thrilled about the newcomers. I think we’re really starting to see the kind of player Kellie values that can thrive in her system. I see Marta as the protypical player in that regard. We’ll see it even more with the class of 2021 - until she has a full roster of players that she handpicked.
