Game Thread: No. Car. Cntrl v Lady Vols, Sat Dec 14th ; Home-FCC; 2 PM; SEC+ "Stream"; WIN 139-59

Agree with all that. But they can do it without dipping below the 150-200 level. There's just no reason to play #358 unless you just absolutely can't fill the schedule any other way.

I can remember getting taken to task on this very board last year for celebrating wins over bad to middling SEC teams like Miss St and Vandy. It is indeed a different world.
Maybe they wanted to come to UT for the payday. They went to LSU as well. Those schools need the $$.

They said on the telecast the goal was to keep UT under 100 and for them to score 30. They knew what was coming.

Did you criticize Elon when his rockets crashed? No because you understand how hard it is to make that happen. You think you know how a ref should call a game so you feel comfortable criticizing

You are watching a game on TV from an angle above the court. You are able to see every inch of the court and every player at all times. They are watching small sections based on eye sight lines. The game is fast. Things get missed.

Do you actually think they don't want to do a good job and issue stuff on purpose? I assume you never miss anything while you are working......
I've long said I'm not sure basketball can be well-reffed these days, at least not often. The players are too big and strong and the game is too fast. I think they do their best, but it's a brutal ask.

Yes, as I said, several coaches who are on the humiliation tour have come out and said it's all for the payday. Hell of a way to make a living. And of course they try to parse it by saying hooray our 80 pt murder was in Pat's house. Might as well try to salvidge something from the experience. But the competitor in me would hate every second of it.

Exactly. That's a decent schedule. Only got super lopsided in the early rounds of the NCAA. The two preseason cupcakes were Montana and Colorado, major schools. NOTHING like that poor group of young ladies today. Pat woulda never, except back in the day when there just weren't that many teams to play. Remember, LA Tech was a major power then.

I've been going to games a long time. I don't ever remember playing as many really bad teams as this year. I'm sure it was due to circumstances and we won't do it again. I'm just more than ready for the real spirit of competition. This ain't it. They're 358th! My rule of thumb is we should never go below Carson Newman level.
It’s going to get worse, actually. Many P4 teams are under scheduling restrictions that prevent home and home series, like we used to see. Tennessee isn’t under restrictions like many schools, but many athletic departments aren’t allowing their men’s and women’s teams to have more than one or two flights in nonconference play. So many teams will use that on a multi team event, then they have these conference challenge events and then they won’t leave home otherwise unless the opponent or an event will pay their travel expenses.

In Pat‘s day, Tennessee was able to offer money, but also a guaranteed TV appearance at a time where most schools would only be on TV once or twice all season. Now, virtually every school at every level has their entire schedule on at least a streaming service.

I am sure they hate the score but they didn't expect to win or even be close. They makes the score a little less important. Now they can not only say they played at the Summit, but their conference opponents won't seem that good

Totally agree. This was a mid level high school team.

No they didn't. Pat would never have scheduled a team like this. Her late 90s/early 2000 teams sometimes won by 30 or 35, and once beat Vandy by 50 in an SEC tourney. But they didn't reach this far to the bottom of the barrel for games. This may have been the worse team I've ever seen the LVs play.

Yes of course. Why else would they take this kind of complete and utter humiliation? Some coach who's currently on the 50 pt loss tour was very honest about it just the other day after being crushed by LSU. Said of course it's awful but it's the only way she has to fund her program. She seemed totally torn down and I'm sure her kids are too.

I know some say these kids enjoy seeing a top tier program and it's a good experience for them. But it sure wouldn't be for me. I can buy a ticket to a top game, I can get a tour of the facilities. BUt none of it is worth being so totally ground to dust and reminded how far off you are from elite programs. Not in the same universe. I wish we wouldn't schedule out of 150 or so range.

I'm just really glad no one got hurt and I can't wait for the rest of preseason to be over. Scheduling has gotten far out of hand in all sports. This was like the football team beating Kent st 77-0. Records are great, but these almost need an asterisk.
My daughter played NAIA and Div 3 basketball. She was able to play against UNC Asheville(low Div 1) on an ESPN game of the week. They lost by 60 but she was so excited being able to play on ESPN She had 6 points and 5 assists. it is a memory that she will never forget. She would have given anything to play against the Lady Vols!

Yes he said he just finished a "money gaunlet" and he was very glad it's over. Now he can cash the checks and go back to playing competition that makes sense for his team.

He was able to endure his money gaunlet with more good humor and resignation than that poor lady the other day. Probably bc of all his injuries he was already freefalling. But I still maintain this is not good for anyone. And it's getting more and more prevalient in all sports.

I can't wait for some more actual and real games.

He even says they played 7-8 money games
The salient point in the NC Central coach's postgame interview was how his players anticipated and enjoyed this game! And how, as a coach, he feels he'd be cheating his lower-D1 players if he didn't give them opportunities to play in the premiere arenas.

I guaran-dang-tee you NC Central's players would not trade their trip to Knoxville for a win over some lower level school.

Their real season starts now. But after accumulating lifetime memories.

Absolutely. They hate the score but love the arena and the experience. Most fans they will play in front of all their career

Hard to shoot 50 percent from the 3 point line in practice let alone in game. You still have to make shots and we put 90 on the board from beyond the arc. Enjoy the ride, we needed a fresh start and that's what we got.

When I was at UT, I was able to practice against the LV, Pat would scream at us if we didn't play like dudes against her team. Us playing that way made them tough and their opponents not so difficult to deal with. She wanted hard picks, strong drives to the rim, play the mens game against her girls. They got tough quick.

Ok if you guys say so. I would hate every humiliating second. And I definitely hate watching these games.
It’s going to get worse,
Great. Bring on the literal bottom of the NET. Kim Mulkey schedules rule. As a season ticket holder, I feel like the quality of the home schedule goes down every year already, while the prices go up.

I don’t know what you’re trying to prove, but either way it’s not going to change anything and was a step in the right direction regardless of the opponent.
I saw some bright moments and success in the past five years no doubt. In recent years, as much as I’ve supported the LVs program I can admit with this same schedule the previous staff and team(s) wouldn’t be producing these same results. It’s not a knock on them just speaking the truth.
That is the bottom line. That is why so many of the former LV players including those currently in the WNBA are intrigued and enthusiastically supportive of this new era.
Constantly finding things to bicker about is just futile. Good for you.

Then I would question their spirit of competition. That team needs a win worse than they need a fancy trip.

It's not just the LVs. Outside of occassional good games, this preseason in WBB has been one of the longest, the worst, and most non competitive I've ever seen. Please let's get on to the good stuff!

Well, again, it’s not something that Tennessee wants to do, but it’s a reality of college basketball in 2024. Scheduling is a two-way street, teams have to want to or be allowed to come and play.

Tennessee already has two neutral site games, the SEC-ACC Challenge and a holiday tournament scheduled for next year. So you will see at least four P4 games. They will also have a trip to MTSU. So that’s already a tougher schedule than 90% of teams will play.

Someone posted on here the other day that Geno said the same four teams will be at the Champions Classic in NYC again next year - just as MSG instead of Barclays, and Tennessee vs. Louisville and UConn vs. Iowa. Do you know if that's true (or is that the holiday tournament you're referring to)?

Yes, thankfully, I think they'll step it up pretty significantly next year. Listen I don't want the kind of gaunlet Kellie overscheduled the last couple of years. But surely we can stay in at least in the 150 NET range. 358th is just ridiculous.

IMO football is even worse. Stopping in the middle of the real season to play Kent St is crazy.

I guess these schedules are among the changes in college sports we can either love or leave now.

I understand why you posted that - and also realize that women's basketball was much less competitive back then - but at the same time, I laughed at that schedule as a comparative.

#3 La Tech (a powerhouse then), Memphis, #2 Stanford (definitely big deal), Maryland, #15 Purdue, #12 Virginia (still big deal then), #7 Penn State, #8 Colorado, Montana, Texas, Arizona, #2 UConn, DePaul, ODU (bigger deal back then), #3 La Tech again, and then the SEC slate as well.

Again, I get it. Back then there were a handful of competitive programs and only a few handfuls of game-changing players.

It just kind of splits the diff on that rejoinder.
