As we've seen so many times in recent years, we folded down the stretch. Played well for 3 quarters and then fell apart in the 4th, on both ends of the court. We got outscored 24-12 in the 4th quarter, which was GAME.
---WHAT is with Harper? While we played relatively well for 3 quarters, she continues to play too many people: we had 10 players with 9 or more minutes of action in the game. She is running so many different players in and out of games constantly that I have no idea how we have any continuity. For example, Puckett played 17 minutes in the first half--7 minutes first quarter, 10 minutes second quarter. And so how many minutes did she play in the 3rd quarter? Answer: ZERO! How does someone play 17 minutes in the first half, make 3 treys-and then not play at all in the 3rd? It didn't hurt us much if at all because Jackson had a big 3rd quarter--but nevertheless it makes no sense. So when Puckett does get put in the game in the 4th quarter, when the wheels are starting to come off, she is cold and anxious and missed a shot or two. She played 17 minutes in the first half, 4 minutes in the 2nd. What might be the reason for that?
Walker, meanwhile, played 24 minutes--3rd most on the team--and was --18 for the game. Worst plus/minus on the team by a mile. We are not going to beat anybody good if Walker is playing a lot. For some reason Harper has not grasped that reality. Powell played 18 minutes and was ++11 for the game. Suarez played pretty well today--and yet played only 2 minutes in the 4th quarter compared to Walker's 7. Harper does not have a grip on her personnel--which is a big reason we underachieve.
----Darby made a 3 early in the 3rd quarter--and that was our last 3 of the game. Puckett had 3 treys in the first half, hardly played in the 2nd half. Oh, my. We ended with 4 made 3s. I'll continue to say it: You're not going to beat good teams making only 4 three's.
---We play too much 1v 1 offensive basketball. Horston did not have a good game. She was 8 for 24. As usual, tried too many times to drive on their bigs--and either missed or had the shots blocked. She has to be more efficient--shoot a higher percentage-- for us to win games like this.
---We had only 5 turnovers for the game---amazing. At the same time, we had only 5 assists. Stanford had 14.
