Game Thread - Tennessee Lady Vols vs #2 Shady Trees & Referees

That was an entertaining and highly competitive game. They stayed with Stanford a lot better than I thought they would. Intimately, the final outcome came down to Brink. When she came back in at the end of the 3rd, she changed the game on offense and defense. Tennessee had no answer for her. Their offense also turned into too much 1-on-1 hero ball that mostly resulted in Spaulding hamburgers courtesy of Brink.

Brink and Jones got all of the praise but holy crap Hannah Jump had what must have been the quietest 19 pts on 7-12 shooting I’ve ever seen. She played such an incredibly smart game.

I believe we win this game with a healthy TK. I know shoulda coulda but TK could have controlled Brink.
I liked to watch brink and jones and stanford play. but did brink draw all those fouls on her bigs some times to be they just had hands up foul call anyway. To me on some of those calls brink drive into post creating body contact fouls when some times no call should happen. Any good game tenn will make ncaa lets hope there no more injurys and team kepts playing well as a team.

Yes when they showed that graphic with Jump having 19, I was like WHEN?! Incredibly quiet.

Top 64 doesn’t get you in. Almost half the bids are auto bids awarded to conference champions. Need to be more like top 40. Who you beat matters just as much, if not more than who you lost to. Who’s our best win? Colorado?

Per the NET, yes, and Colorado is #42. Plenty of opportunities to beat SEC teams ranked above that (South Carolina, LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama).

Per Massey it's still Colorado, where they're #44, and add Georgia to the SEC teams ranked above that.

Per HerHoopStats, it's actually Massachusetts, who is #44, and Colorado is right behind at #45. All of those same SEC teams are ranked above them.

Good day VolNation,
I have been registered for a while now but decided to post today after watching the Lady Vols vs Stanford. I have been a life long lady vols fan but this team need a coach who can install an offense and coach defense. Also, her judgement in keeping certain players on the floor is very poor. Powell was constantly getting beaten back door by the much bigger guard Jones yet she kept her in. When she did take her out, she brings in Jordan Walker smh. Kaiya Wynn is a much better defender than both Walker and Powell. Coach Harper kills the momentum of her team with her constant substitution patterns. She didn’t kill Stanford momentum by calling a timeout early in their run in the 4th quarter.. Rickea was the reason you got the 8 point lead in the second quarter and you took her out the game.. I love Kelly Harper as a player for Pat Summit Lady Vols but not as the coach of this team. This team desperately need an offensive system, it’s just individual ball. Too many forced shots and terrible team defense. How can you not coach your team to defend back door passes which is a staple of Stanford’s triangle offense? I’m not bashing coach Harper in any way, the evidence is clear in the performances of this team against ranked opponents. Without an offensive system and great team defense, this team will not make the sweet 16 this year. She needs to let Rickea play so that she can get into a rhythm. I will not be surprise if many of the players on this team decide to leave. I’m pulling for the lady Vols but coach Harper need to get it together. Pat Summit went to the Chicago Bulls to see Tex Winter and Phil Jackson in the 1990’s to learn the triple post offense and taught it to her lady Vols teams. This Lady Vols team doesn’t have an offensive system and it has been killing this team the past 3 years..
Ah yes. If only she'd played Kaiya Wynn more . . .

You finish in the top four in the SEC your in it is just people talking BS to think you are not. Holly got in with a 7 and 9 SEC record but had won about ten non conference games. It all comes down to league play you finish in the top four in your league especially the SEC your in the tourney. No reason we should not win 12 at least in the SEC, So until we don't people who are talking about you need this win or that win don't know what they are talking about. Done been around way to long to know that the top four finishers in the SEC always make the tourney and sometimes even more. Seven made it last season.

But both of those were at home. And to get credit for a Q1 win at home, the opponent has to be top 30. That means we have zero Q1 wins. Don’t know many teams that get in without at least one. The only OOC chance left to get one is UConn. If we lose that one we will be relying entirely on our conference play to get in. We may end up having to win 11 games in SEC play just to get in, unless by some miracle we beat SC.

vols can beat hogs and tigers sec play.. They do not need to get in ncaa. top 4 sec finished theyare in.

I`m not saying they can`t beat Ark or LSU never said that. Just saying they will need to beat a top 25 team to get in. That is just my opinion.

As we've seen so many times in recent years, we folded down the stretch. Played well for 3 quarters and then fell apart in the 4th, on both ends of the court. We got outscored 24-12 in the 4th quarter, which was GAME.

---WHAT is with Harper? While we played relatively well for 3 quarters, she continues to play too many people: we had 10 players with 9 or more minutes of action in the game. She is running so many different players in and out of games constantly that I have no idea how we have any continuity. For example, Puckett played 17 minutes in the first half--7 minutes first quarter, 10 minutes second quarter. And so how many minutes did she play in the 3rd quarter? Answer: ZERO! So when she does get put in the game in the 4th quarter, when the wheels are starting to come off, she is cold and anxious and missed a shot or two. She played 17 minutes in the first half, 4 minutes in the 2nd. That makes NO SENSE.

Walker, meanwhile, played 24 minutes--3rd most on the team--and was a --18 for the game. We are not going to beat anybody good if Walker is playing a lot. For some reason Harper has not grasped that reality.

----Darby made a 3 early in the 3rd quarter--and that was our last 3 of the game. Puckett had 3 treys in the first half, hardly played in the 2nd half. Oh, my. We ended with 4 made 3s. I'll continue to say it: You're not going to beat good teams making only 4 three's.

---We play too much 1v

So we can put the Jackson thing to rest! View attachment 524987
I saw that. She had about three trainers working on it.

Personally, I like RJ in the role Ziegler plays for the boys. She gives us energy off bench. Especially, in third quarter there once Horston went to bench.

Bottom line...we couldn't hit a shot in fourth quarter. Stanford's defense had a lot to do with that. The skinny blond girl is very good on defense, and she shut us down in crunch time.

How does someone play 17 minutes in the first half, make 3 treys-and then not play at all in the 3rd? It didn't hurt us much if at all because Jackson had a big 3rd quarter--but nevertheless it makes no sense. So when Puckett does get put in the game in the 4th quarter, when the wheels are starting to come off, she is cold and anxious and missed a shot or two. She played 17 minutes in the first half, 4 minutes in the 2nd. What might be the reason for that?

Walker, meanwhile, played 24 minutes--3rd most on the team--and was --18 for the game. Worst plus/minus on the team by a mile. We are not going to beat anybody good if Walker is playing a lot. For some reason Harper has not grasped that reality. Powell played 18 minutes and was ++11 for the game. Suarez played pretty well today--and yet played only 2 minutes in the 4th quarter compared to Walker's 7. Harper does not have a grip on her personnel--which is a big reason we underachieve.

---We play too much 1v 1 offensive basketball. Horston did not have a good game. She was 8 for 24. As usual, tried too many times to drive on their bigs--and either missed or had the shots blocked. She has to be more efficient--shoot a higher percentage-- for us to win games like this.

---We had only 5 turnovers for the game---amazing. At the same time, we had only 5 assists. Stanford had 14.

Uh. Puckett started second half. Picked up her third foul nine seconds into the quarter and was rightfully replaced by Rickea.
