Game Thread UT "Lady Vols" v UCF "Knights"

I think you either have to let Jackson play or let her leave the team. I don't think you can take two or three weeks to work through issues with the SEC coming up in a couple of weeks. Nine minutes off the bench not going to do us much good and a player that is continually causes unrest on the team isn't either. I thought it was behind us when she came back the other game evidently it is not. Totally noticeable cause we all know Jackson is an extremely talented player much better than almost everyone playing more right now.

I do know it is going to take every thing we have to win at Stanford and I think players like Jackson, Horston, Hollingshead, Franklin, and Puckett are going to have to play most of the minutes with some backup from Darby, Powell, and others. I would say that top five need about 150 minutes for us to keep the game reasonable with a chance to win. I like where all the players are going they are getting there slowly. Playing at Stanford is one of the three or four hardest places to play right now. We don't need to have be motivated and if we start out badly timeout has to be used immediately regardless of what consequences that brings later in the game.

I think this team is more suited for a matchup zone type defense. Some of the players are just not very good man to man defenders. The matchup helps these players and is also less tiring to play.

Is it possible that Jackson didn't play a lot last night because UCF was overmatched and it was an opportunity to give other players further down on the bench (like Justine) more playing time that they wouldn't otherwise get against tougher OOC opponents or SEC play?

Not likely, you play your starters and adjust accordingly. We were up 3 at halftime.

Agree as it seems we are only 1/3 through the season and this is now a long continuation of a situation that seems to be taking steps backwards or another recent strike.

Hard to buy that when Horston played 21 minutes and Jackson didn't play until the second half. You would think they would've both played early and about the same amount of time. Her playing all nine minutes late third quarter and fourth just was strange to see. To me better if she had not played at all cause then you can think of other reasons. This just looks like problems unresolved no other way to consider it.

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realize it was such a close game in the first half. For sure, would have made sense to have Jackson out there while the game was competitive vs. once the outcome was already decided.

In my opinion, here is how Coach Pat Summitt would handle this distraction..

She would have watched that game tape last night; then, again this morning.

Then, whenever Ms Jackson reports to practice, she would have a one-on-one conversation.

# 1: Ms Jackson will not being traveling with the team to Stanford.
# 2: Ms Jackson is free to leave Knoxville whenever she wishes to head home to Michigan
# 3: If Ms Jackson departs, there is no return.

Lady Vols don't walk around on defense like that, and we aren't going to start now.

For the next 100 days, she can be on-board the Lady Vols ship. If she is unwilling to perform her duties, then we will provide her with gas money to go home. She has received her two warnings; the third will be a dismissal.

or we could see what the deal truly is before we strike those matches

Trying to 'figure out the deal' is going on three weeks now.

If I was a wagering man, I'm thinking the deal is becoming to look like another Detroit legend, Isaiah Thomas.

Did you see his smiling face in that photo of the 1992 Olympic Team?

Why does the team come out unfocused? Why does player after player and Coach Kellie have to say post game as she says gently(sarcasm or not) tell them they shouldn't be guarding the 3 line so bad or not rebound as they should. Regardless of an excellent 2nd half the last 2 games, why not come out just as focused from the start. I am ok if the LV lose, but why not always show full effort from the tip? I just don't understand that mindset. It's hard to comprehend for me. It's like some of the players don't really give full effort and need a talking from Coach Kellie to reinforce the game takes 40 minutes. The quotes don't match in what the players keep saying each possession matters. Prove it from the start, not after halftime.

This is what separates a potentially great team from a good team. You want that fire, desire, and commitment to team to already be entrenched in each player. Those team don't have to be constantly motivated by a coach once there is buy in from the players. It makes me wonder if distractions with what is happening to your star player and having so many players miss games have interfered with this.

Rather than playing Where's Waldo in every thread (especially when a dedicated thread already exists), it would be nice if we could focus on what actually happens on the court in each game.

For instance, last night's game provided multiple topics for discussion. The starting and subbing rotations. Various defensive schemes. The vastly-improved assist to turnover ratio. Why the team has been starting slowly in first half. The emergence of confidence among some new players. Etc., etc.

All this talk about "distractions" just makes me wonder...distractions for whom? Seems like a self-fulfilling fan prophecy.

Focusing on Stanford is a great way to avoid getting distracted.

Not that old, just 45. Schools shut down for snow in my day. I did have a truck that used gasoline though.
You sound older, a lot older! I don’t know a lot of 45 year olds. who say “in my day”. But hey, I’m looking forward to fusion powered vehicles myself. You might actually live to see it!!

Correction, GEN X says "back in the day". Wise beyond my years, I'll take it as a complement.

Back in the salad days. The days of wine and roses. The good ole days. The Gilded Age. The Age of Enlightenment. The Renaissance. The Dark Ages. The Roman Empire. The Grecian city-states. The Age of Pharaohs.

Hmm, CPS' handling of Michelle Marciniak and a few other players who got in the coach's proverbial dog house would indicate her approach would have been very different and more effective that publicly throwing a player under the bus.

And, when RJ entered the game she worked. she fought for rebounds, she dove on the floor for loose balls, and she got out on defense, Heck, Kam Harris even noted how hard RJ was working to get over a screen.

She also made excellent passes.

If you treat that relationship the same way you did 20 years ago, you won’t have a lot of long term clients.

not sure what you mean

But Pat is gone. I’m just saying. We as Vol Nation should not forget her but we also have to embrace the future. I’m certain Pat would want that also. This whole Pat would or Pat did blah blah becomes a little redundant.

Ok, I was spot watching. But, I saw one chance where she could have dove for a ball but did not.

Is there anyone here who thinks that RJ was playing at her usual energy / ability level last night? Not a chance. She was supportive of her teammates. But, she was playing in bursts...off / on...sending a message that she isn't H-A-P-P-Y with someone or something.
