Game thread: Ut vs. Lip

I always felt Simmons disrupted the offense because no one ever knew what she was going to do and she didn't pass very well. She started doing that better last year in the second half of the season when Tennessee made their run but it went out the window against Maryland. I kind of wonder if the effects of Simmons are lingering in that during her 4-year tenure ball distribution and passing were poor.

It's hard to say, but most teams are successful when they have an effective scorer looking to score and the rest of the players complement that player. I have seen some teams be successful without a routine leading scorer, but everyone kind of picks up the slack as a team or unit. So far, we don't seem to be excelling in either way, so something has to change if we want to be successful IMO.

Good point. My main problem with Mass is that is all she can do is shoot threes and free throws and she doesn't move very well so good teams can guard her easily. Also, horrible defender but I could go with that line-up initially.

In other words, the same player she was as a freshman...

Of course not, but let's not act like winning the SEC means what it used to when it was regularly getting two teams in the Final Four....

You can only play with the cards you're dealt. Obviously, Holly (nor Pat in the post-Parker era) has had Tennessee at the level they enjoyed previously, but that has a lot to do with recruiting that happened at other schools, not just what was happening in Knoxville.

If I was in charge of the line-up, I'd pick:

Andraya Carter (PG)
Ariel Massengale (2 guard)
Alexa Middleton (3 guard)
Bashaara Graves (forward)
Isabelle Harrison (center)

I think Carter is too scrappy, hustles too hard, good shooter, and excellent leaper to be sitting the bench. True, she doesn't score as much as I'd prefer, but that makes her suitable for running the point. We got better as a team last year when she took over the point.

Ariel is a great player. Before she went out on injury last year, she was arguably one of our best players. She's a great shooter and tends to get more shots when she isn't running the point.

Middleton is an excellent 3 point shooter, great passer, and has a high basketball IQ. I'd love to see what our offense could be if we had her as a threat on the court more times than not.

Harrison and Graves are our tried and true inside presence and with Russell out, we need them more than ever.

I just don't like Jones on the floor. She turns it over too much. When she's not turning it over, she looks too unsure of herself. Reynolds doesn't have that IT factor for me. She has had her moments and I think she's fine coming off the bench and I hope she continues to improve. Burdick is also inconsistent, but I'd like to see her come off the bench and stick to the mid-range game and maybe even down low when Izzy and Graves need a breather.

I DO want to see more of Nared and Dunbar. I can't yet say how much more I want to see but I have a good feeling about Nared. She's taller than I thought she was and if she could maybe be a little quicker and more assertive, which may come over time, then who knows? Dunbar is always ready to shoot the 3. I like that, too, so far.

I don't get Moore and don't know what to think. She does well when she plays usually but she doesn't get quality minutes. She seems like she's always in the dog house or in trouble. I'd like to think there's a good reason she's not playing but I'm at the point I'd also like to see it for myself. If other players can make mistakes repeatably, I'd like to see her make a few mistakes, too, But, I still think Izzy and Graves are the better players to start with.

If Carter would understand that her role is to reek havoc on the opposing point and to penetrate and to distribute the ball then I would have no problem with Carter starting. I would give her a chance. You put Mass at the two against Stanford and they will shut her down. Plus she can defend no one. But, I would give it a shot. Middleton at the three in my opinion is problematic. I would rather her at the two and Nared at the three. The most important thing with any of these line-ups is that they play great defense and they move the ball on offense. I could go with that above as long as Burdick doesn't have a major role and see how it works. I have a problem with Massengale having a major role because she disappears in big games. But, I would try it.

kinda, from watching her play in the last game and reading her tweets. She doesn't seem to happy right now. Hope I'm wrong!

I'm a little baffled as to why holly won't play her more than a few minutes a game. She has a super sweet shot and she passes well. I'd hate to lose her..

She is probably wondering what the criterion is for playing time. If she would just turn the ball over more, miss point blank shots off the backboard, or not defend anyone then she'd get some playing time.

She should try more no- look passes. That's usually a criteria for increased playing time and unadulterated praise.
