Gary Danielson on 104.5

Gary just said that he has no clue how Jones will do. He goes on to say that it's very interesting that Tennessee has decided to play "finesse" football, while LSU, Bama, Florida, and Georgia are all grinding out a line of scrimmage brand of football.

I am supportive of the Jones hire, but as a fan, and not a student of the game, these comments give me pause.

Thoughts?

i hate to point out the obvious, you usually need a once in a generation type qb to make the spread really work.

so, tennessee needs to find vince young, tebow, cam, or johnny football out there somewhere.

Im pretty sure he said in his press conference he wanted to be pro style. He said he would build his scheme around personnel. Did i hear that wrong?

Can guarantee you that statement was there to appease the average ball fan who hasn't the slightest clue on football. The term spread and pro-style really don't mean anything nowadays.

During his presser he said the opposite:

Pro style offense and physical.

Coach Jones said they would adapt based on the QB. I do find it interesting that Pederson (sp) was his top qb recruit... and then signed with us instead.

so clearly we have the QB he wanted for his style of offense.

You mean PETERMAN? Lawd.

In the presser CBJ stated we wasn't running a "finesse" style. He said we would run the ball and we would be physical. He also stated we would be a pro style as well.
I didn't catch the presser. That's good to here.. That's what you have to do....

The way their offense line and running backs roll over people should be a good indication.

I agree on the RBs, but putting Florida and UGA in the same category offensively as LSU and Alabama is just wrong.

The fact is, we're not going to out-smashmouth those teams, so what's wrong with throwing it around a little more as long as we don't play soft?

This is what i heard. People would do well to drop preconceived notions and give the guy a shot.

Cincinnati ran the ball 464 times this year. They attempted 346 passes.

Aesthetically I like to watch I formation old man football, but as long as we have a legit running game I don't really care what formation it's out of.

Finesse was his main talking point.. That's what the spread, read option is.. You need a Cam Newton to make that work.. You have to run the ball in this conference.. I don't care for that offensive philosophy..

Cincinnati has rushed for well over 2,000 yards the last two seasons and it wasn't the QB. Each of the last 3 years they have had running backs over 1,200 yards. Florida ran the read option pretty well this past seaon and they don't have Cam Newton. Everyone just looking for reasons to complain.

You're right, that's just who Danielson mentioned, I believe it was usin them as examples of physicality.

Again, get ready for a sideline to sideline offense, Florida lined up in the I this year more than they have in the last decade.

Lets see...

Oregon Spread
Texas A&M Spread
Ohio State Spread
Texas Spread

I think those are good examples of people with spread offenses. It makes it easier to find offensive lineman because you dont need 350lb road graders.

You probably couldn't understand exactly what he said with Tebow' s stones in his face. Between him and Vern, the best game of the year was almost unbearable.

What team is playing for the national championship?

And if you think that UT has the talent that Bama does right now then nothing else needs to be said. A & M beat Bama running a different style and with less talent. Sometimes you have to outcoach them. UT will have to do that because they aren't outtalenting anyone for awhile.

He can run the wishbone if it gets us to the dome.

Some may think the game is won at the line of scrimmage. I am from the old school thinking the game is won putting the ball in the end zone any way you can. I love the hire, Go Butch Jones, Go Vols.

Just spoke truthfully about the butch jones hire and I think it speaks a lot to what some of us are worried about. I'll try to find a transcript.
Quotes I remember
"I don't know"
"Can Butch Jones build a program on his system? He hasn't done it before, he's won in programs others have built"
"Tennessee has made a decision to move towards a finesse style of play"

If BJ tries this, he will be doomed to failure in the SEC.

I'm not surprised at anything these guys say.....on College Football Live on ESPNU...Seahorn and whatever his name is...kept talking about the woeful lack of talent at UT....Folks that's just not true...sure we could use a couple of All American cornerbacks and a big time tailback...but the last time I checked we have one of the TOP offensive lines in the country and our wideouts werent bad (granted they'll be gone soon)....But the talent level IS NOT that far off....AND WE STILL WERE IN MOST EVERY GAME WE PLAYED...Goodness folks lets show a little bit of calm here...
