Vandy and Miss State ran the ball well against Tennessee and they didn't have Cam Newton. Love it or hate it, offensive scoring is way up in college football largely due to the proliferation of spread offenses.
ABSOLUTELY LAUGHABLE! Bama will probably win their 3rd NC in four years --How? And who are they playing this year for the NC? Is it a team with a spread offense? And who did they play last year? Was it a team with a spread offense? And how has that spread offense worked out for Oregon against every SEC team except UT?
Exactly. What does spread even mean? Anyone? Does it refer to personnel? Are we talking about 11, 10, what? West coast teams used it as a formation with Eagle personnel. Does it refer to huge line splits like Leach? Downhill running with power and guard pulling? Inside zone and wide zone stretch plays? Vertical stemmed passing trees? Alley screens, bubble screens, jailbreak, what? Freeze checking no-huddle? It seriously is a joke that people like Gregg Easterbrook have labeled offenses as this or that and the average fan has picked it up. Spread could literally mean anything. Malzahn has made a living off of hand sweeps, inverted veer and power/counter. These other teams are zone to the core. Totally opposite mentalities. It blows my mind how anyone can sit here and label a team "pro-style" simply because they go under center. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but half of the "pros" are running offenses out of gun as a majority percentage now.
I would imagine that there will be some form of the spread mixed in our offense. He has used that offense his whole career and had success. I don't see why he would go away from it now.
People hear finesse and think soft. Watch Oregon's offensive line play. They're not soft.
Just spoke truthfully about the butch jones hire and I think it speaks a lot to what some of us are worried about. I'll try to find a transcript.
Quotes I remember
"I don't know"
"Can Butch Jones build a program on his system? He hasn't done it before, he's won in programs others have built"
"Tennessee has made a decision to move towards a finesse style of play"
Gary just said that he has no clue how Jones will do. He goes on to say that it's very interesting that Tennessee has decided to play "finesse" football, while LSU, Bama, Florida, and Georgia are all grinding out a line of scrimmage brand of football.
I am supportive of the Jones hire, but as a fan, and not a student of the game, these comments give me pause.
Thoughts?
