Gary Danielson on 104.5

What was interesting about Danielson's interview was he said he didn't know anything about CBJ, but then goes on to spend 2 mins talking about aspects of his program that he weren't sure would work like he knew stuff about him...which is it???

Also, I think CBJ addressed his commitment to running the ball and playing tough defense, he drove that point home in my mind. That doesn't sound like finesse to me.

I hope so, Ill believe it when I seee it, you don't turn your career system around over night, with no experience in this league

Just spoke truthfully about the butch jones hire and I think it speaks a lot to what some of us are worried about. I'll try to find a transcript.
Quotes I remember
"I don't know"
"Can Butch Jones build a program on his system? He hasn't done it before, he's won in programs others have built"
"Tennessee has made a decision to move towards a finesse style of play"

Did this dumbazz even listen to the PC. Jones made a point to say he does not use a finesse style and adjusts/adapts to the players.

Translation: I I have a running QB, we will play to that strength. If a pocket passer we will play to that strength.

In other words, he is not a system style coach. Is comfortable coaching "spread" or "Pro style"

Some may think the game is won at the line of scrimmage. I am from the old school thinking the game is won putting the ball in the end zone any way you can. I love the hire, Go Butch Davis, Go Vols.

You arent very old school, the game is won by defense :)

What does spread even mean? Anyone? Does it refer to personnel? Are we talking about 11, 10, what? West coast teams used it as a formation with Eagle personnel. Does it refer to huge line splits like Leach? Downhill running with power and guard pulling? Inside zone and wide zone stretch plays? Vertical stemmed passing trees? Alley screens, bubble screens, jailbreak, what? Freeze checking no-huddle? It seriously is a joke that people like Gregg Easterbrook have labeled offenses as this or that and the average fan has picked it up. Spread could literally mean anything. Malzahn has made a living off of hand sweeps, inverted veer and power/counter. These other teams are zone to the core. Totally opposite mentalities. It blows my mind how anyone can sit here and label a team "pro-style" simply because they go under center. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but half of the "pros" are running offenses out of gun as a majority percentage now.

you know that for the most part coaches are like politicians.

if their lips are moving, they are lying.

don't be quick to bash someone for not taking a coach 100% at his word.

Gary is skeptical obviously... Nobody knows how Butch Jones will do. The only thing we can do is go all in, support him and see what happens. I like his attitude. I like his drive and I think he will do well.

Gary just said that he has no clue how Jones will do. He goes on to say that it's very interesting that Tennessee has decided to play "finesse" football, while LSU, Bama, Florida, and Georgia are all grinding out a line of scrimmage brand of football.

I am supportive of the Jones hire, but as a fan, and not a student of the game, these comments give me pause.

Thoughts?

The Tennessee Football BRAND is to play physical football on the line of scrimmage--run the ball first--and throw the ball off of play action--and make you pay with physical defense!

That's how we did it in the 90's and that's how Bama, Fla, and LSU does it today....UGA more finesse than physical....

As much as I hate to admit it--Muschamp earned my respect this year by taking Fla back to that style--and he's just one big, powerful RB away from completing the transition.

I HOPE that CBJ will change and bring that mentality back--just like Kelly did with ND--but it's wait and see.

GO VOLS! :salute:

And don't be quick to judge a coach before he even coaches his first game at UT.

If you watch the pressed, he mentions the physical line play in the SEC and how he adjust to his players ability. I get the feeling he will not try to force the style but instead adjust the style to the players abilities and strengths.

Brian Kelly was a finesse guy.
UNTIL
He got to Notre Dame. Jones said very plainly that he would run a pro-style offense at UT, and that DEFENSE wins in this conference. He knows the landscape.

Finesse was his main talking point.. That's what the spread, read option is.. You need a Cam Newton to make that work.. You have to run the ball in this conference.. I don't care for that offensive philosophy..

Neither do I. Just when we get our offense going they are going scratch everything and make these guys re-learn all over again. I was for keeping Chaney and improve play calling but CBJ is a "so called" offensive guru. We needed a defensive minded coach. Our offense was fine.

I will support the new coach and hope he proves me wrong.

The game is won by scoring more points than the opponent. End of story. It doesnt matter if its the spread, pro style, etc...

The most important thing is that his team buys into him and more importantly his assistants, the last three years are what the results are when that doesnt happen.

Vandy and Miss State ran the ball well against Tennessee and they didn't have Cam Newton. Love it or hate it, offensive scoring is way up in college football largely due to the proliferation of spread offenses.

I guess Gary was not interested in listening to the presser. Coach Jones addressed the finesse issue. He said he does not call it a spread offense, that it is an offense oriented around the QB. He said that both the offense and the defense would play hard nosed smash mouth football. I believe he will be a great coach when he gets some more speed on both sides of the ball the players to buy into his system. I know one of his players who is from Atlanta and he said he is a great coach and it hurt to see him leave his team at UC. He has coached a number of high drafted NFL players and I truly believe he will make us proud.

hopefully ut can recruit a ton of fast receivers so they can throw it all over the field in the spread

Pound it up the middle on 1st and 2nd, then throw on 3rd and 8.

Well, Meyers did pretty dang good

Not a fan of the spread myself, but in the wait and see

Urban Cryer did pretty good with Tebow--and many studs came to Fla to play with Tebow...They don't beat us in 2006 without Tebow...and Bama FLOGGED them in 2009 with TEBOW...

Big, physical teams who can run the ball and play suffocating defense always will dominate the SEC...

The game is changing.. You still have to run the ball and play good defense to win though.. We tried to outscore teams this year.. Didn't work very well..
