Did Gary D. or some of the rest of you even listen to the Jones presser?

He came right out and stated that he doesnt like the phrase "spread offense". He said he will have a "Pro Style" offense that pounds the ball, that hits people, and that is up tempo.

He specifically said it will NOT be a typical Spread Offense.

I would expect it to look pretty much like the O-fence you had this past year. But up tempo. And hopefully not always having to get the lead back every time the go out on the field. (because the defense just opened the floodgates) Well, 'cept for that 3rd week of the season, yall can play from behind all game during that one..that would suit me fine.

Since you are copying and pasting your sentiment in multiple threads, I guess I will have to answer appropriately. Arakansas got Bielema who has no Southern recruiting ties. He won the Big 10 championship the last 3 years. CBJ has no Southern recruiting ties "either" (although he has invaded Florida and Tennessee in previous ventures) and has won the MAC and Big Least twice each. I call that a win with his recruiting ties. Comparing Petrino to Dooley is asinine. Dooley was the 9th choice and was NEEDED with 3 weeks left for National Signing Day. Petrino was a nice comfortable hire at the time.

AD Fart said he only met with 4 coaches. I think he may of thought some of the other coaches were a sure fire thing. Maybe he was really counting Jimbo Fisher. IDK, but I will support Jones until he gives me a real reason to not support him. I may not be happy about it though. I am glad that Fart doesn't waste money on a coach searching firm. I think Hambone wasted tons of money on it. I just wish Dave had a more desirable list of candidates.

I think Butch Jones is not an idiot. He said he will tailor things around the skill sets of his players' abilities. He has watched the SEC his whole life. You do not win 4 conference championships as a head coach without figuring out how to beat the other teams in your division.

This is the main reason I'm concerned about the Butch Jones hire. I was hoping we were working our way back to power football. The run game goes a long way in controlling the clock and keeping your defense fresh. Part of the problem with quick strike spread type offenses is that when they get stifled by opposing defenses, you get a lot of quick 3 and outs that leave the defense on the field to long.

Any other conference, it wouldn't matter, seeing as how none of them play great defense. But the SEC has 7 or 8 teams that won't just allow a team to march up and down the field on them.

One thing I did take note from the presser was that Butch Jones said he would play his offense to the strength of the players on the team. This at least suggests he won't force a scheme on players not built to play it.

I guess the old adage of "offense sells tickets, defense wins championships" holds true. This thread is focusing 98% on offense.

It's our defense that's been lacking. I read somewhere that the Cincy defense allowed 17ppg last year. I know it was the Big East, but it was also Big East athletes. How many of us would love to have had those numbers this year?

And as for the amount of time they spend on the field, doesn't every defense control their own destiny to a large extent? If our defense got more 3 and outs, then they would be able to get off the field sooner.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Vol fan, but I am in no way supportive of the B Jones hire. Look at the idiotic contract with its bonuses and buyouts. We could have gotten Tressell or Petrino without having to pay their contract buyout as we had to pay $1.4M to UofCincy for Jones. We could have gotten them for a shorter "prove yourself" contract for much, much less.

My honest thoughts... GBO, but fire Dave Hamilton, ooops, Hart.

I posted this on a Butch Jones thread on Nov 15th. Been a Vol fan for a long time and this was the guy I was hoping we would get from the beginning. Mark my words... he will leave UT as the greatest UT coach on record...

I know the skeptics will say he hasn't been a head coach in a major conference, but neither was Brian Kelly when he was at Cincinatti. I encourage you guys to look him up on youtube and watch how he coaches and most importantly, how much respect his players have for him. This guy can coach up players and he is very involved in every element of the practices. I know people are scared to hire someone from a smaller conference because of how Dooley worked out, but keep this in mind. Dooley didn't win enough games at Louisianna Tech to earn the UT job. Butch Jones has, and in short order too! Bottom line, this guy can coach!

I'm not worried about the guys coaching ability or what style of offense he will run. Can he recruit? That's my concern!

So you're telling me finesse teams don't win the line of scrimmage. Either you push people around or you don't - I thik most coaches at this level (Sans Sunseri) got that figured out.

after tim tebow left fla, his spread offense sucked. It takes a superstar QB who can run the ball and throw when needed to put up big points.

Any system will work if u have the top 5 type players at theirtheir position.. If he recruits like cdd his system is doa in the sec.sec.
