This is very surreal. I have lived on Proffitt Rd across from Gatlinburg Pittman HS and Mills Park for for most of my life. This area just around the school has been spared so far. My sister, her husband and 4 year old just got out of their home in Cobbly Knob last night. The house beside was burning when they left. Their house is now gone. There has been a lot lost overnight but, still not over. Fires still burning around the area.
So sorry for their loss. I hope you guys are all safe.

It's devastating but it could have been so much worse without the rain and the hard work of the first responders...it could have literally been leveled

Alright, gang- I just got out of Gatlinburg about 20 minutes ago. Aquarium is safe. Looks like it will stay that way. Park Vista and Arrowmont (short of 3 buildings on the back side of campus that were destroyed) are untouched- I'll attach proof of life. I'm not sure who's putting word out that Ober is a total loss.. it's a total miss. So much so, they eventually opened up to take folks in, which greatly alleviated the number of people we had to try to navigate down Ski mtn road. Chalet Village, however- I'd say is 90-95% gone, once you start up Cliff Branch and beyond. Cobbly Nob has really taken it on the chin, too. I snapped what I could- if I haven't mentioned a particular area, I honestly have no idea what the status is.
Really hope the reports thus far of zero fatalities is accurate. If true, that's seriously a miracle in and of itself.

My cousin is an EMT in Knoxville and was called in to help last night. She said the reports of zero fatalities are incorrect.

Prayers for the people and those mountains. Critters too. I don't see how your sister's report could be wrong but I pray it is.

I have lived in G'burg before, some years ago and still visit often and I have gotten lost on those mountain roads on a good day. Can't imagine a tourist would fare well trying to drive off the mountain at night in panic mode with the world on fire.

Wbir had a guy on that heard on the news the spur was on fire last night so he and his son jumped in the car. Said he got stuck in traffic and his wife called his cell phone and told him the fire was right next to their house. He told her to call 911 and get out and couldn't make it back and hasn't heard from her.
Very sad.

The whole area might need to look in to a fire siren. There is just so many cabins, hotels, and homes that I'm sure was hard to get to and let people know to get out.
