General McChrystal opens mouth, inserts foot

That's what he gets for voting for Barry. I agree with his comments but now I am sure he will "resign".

I have no opinion of the man one way or another, don't even know if he's considered a great leader among his peers but it seems to me that our military leaders today have to deal with politics much more than in the past. Either that or the scope and reach of the media today just amplifies and makes us aware of the politics involved. Haven't generals in the past been very outspoken in the past?

"Even though he had voted for (President Barack) Obama, McChrystal and his new commander-in-chief failed from the outset to connect. The general first encountered Obama a week after he took office, when the president met with a dozen senior military officials in a room at the Pentagon known as the Tank. According to sources familiar with the meeting, McChrystal thought Obama looked "uncomfortable and intimidated" by the roomful of military brass. Their first one-on-one meeting took place in the Oval Office four months later, after McChrystal got the Afghanistan job, and it didn't go much better. 'It was a 10-minute photo-op,' says an adviser to McChrystal. 'Obama clearly didn't know anything about him, who he was. Here's the guy who's going to run his f-ing war, but he didn't seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed.'"

Excerpts from Rolling Stone article on Gen. McChrystal – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs

obama only cares about photo ops? no i can't believe it.

He's gotta be out but some damage is done.

Remember how W relieved someone of command because he disagreed with the Iraq strategy? The lefties howled about it. This is different in the sense it includes personal comments but still at the core it is disagreement between commander and commander-in-chief. Will the left howl at Obama?

This is one case where I bet Obama actually is furious - furious because it is an attack against himself, not just a massive environmental and economic disaster. How will he blame Bush for this one?

If the stuff I've heard and read regarding the new ROE and patrolling patterns in Afghanistan is even remotely true, he is simply trying to get the message out and willing to forgo his career in the process. Hell, how much more career is there?

If I were Obama, I wouldn't even give him the chance to resign. He'd be relieved of his command instantly and shown the door as soon as I could get the paperwork done.

This is not about left or right, Republican, or Democrat. A military leader simply cannot go around giving interviews -- especially ones he knows will raise an s-storm like this -- and expect to stay employed.

The giving of interviews was likely encouraged by the White House....until recently.

Would get far more accomplished this way.

agreed

this was not the right way to express dissatisfaction with the admin but generals have publicly disagreed before (see Gen Shinseki).

Patton & MacArthur weren't exactly known for quietly going about their business either.

if he's been ignored by hussein for almost 2 years, i would say he's getting frustrated. I think he knew exactly what he was doing. i would say hussein and his regime is tying the general.

All of this is Obama's own fault. If he had any clue what he was doing, he wouldn't have such a disgruntled General in command of the Afghan theatre. And regardless of what he does, it's a lose-lose situation for Obama.

It's not a loser if he destroys the Taliban.
