Everyone knows UT has a really good defense that has come up big in the ranked games this season. Georgia has had problems with their offensive line this year in their big games. With no one knowing if we are going to have Nico back as a starting QB against GA, the win will come down to who calls a better game for each offense. VOLS have to do a better job at 1). Tempo..........UT has really come off the fast starting offense at the first of the year. Lack of tempo seems to be a drive killer by the Vols, along with missed or dropped passes by Nico and the receivers. 2). Offensive play calling seems to be getting more vanilla and predictable by the minute. Joey Halzle has to either call a better game by realizing that SEC coaches have seen most if not all offensive plays by UT, or use plays that were so explosive last year by our receivers that have not even been called yet by Halzle (where Jalin Hyatt lined up tight behind left offensive guard then runs down left side to catch a long pass). We have the talent, but is not being used to the UT receivers' collective abilities. 3). Offensive scheme has go become less predictable. Our scheming has less elusiveness than it did last year. Yes, I know we have a red-shirt freshman in Nico, but at least throw some less predictable schemes including a wildcat package with other backs. Mike Bobo has quite a few schemes with use by their receiving corp than we do. When their offense clicks, they score a ton of points, even against good teams.

Play calling has got to be better. You can't have Dylan Sampson run into the line 3 times straight all the time. If you're UGA why would you not key on him all the time? I don't have the answers but a novice can predict where the ball is going most of the time.

Sigh. Playcalling has been fine. We’ve missed several open plays, had drops, fumbles, etc. This team has left a ton of points on the field this year. Now there have been some series that were wasted series imho where Heupel was going to burn clock and force the other team to use TOs.

By and large the play calling has been limited bc you’ve got a first year QB and early on we had a sub par Oline.

Like most games like this, I think it will come down to OL/DL play. Who can protect their QB? Who can stuff the run?

And of course…. turnovers. For the first time in a LONG time, we have multiple PLAYMAKERS in the secondary. I expect a handful of big plays to decide the outcome. Will they go our way? Only God knows.

Nimrod or White or Kitselman or McCoy has to start being a number 1 type receiver to take some of the work load off Sampson.

Will probably have a 5th yr qb for most of the game. Play book should be "opened up" for him.
More Dylan Sampson and more RPO possible? Nico hasn't been making the best decisions on the
RPO due to his lack of experience.

Without NICO, we need our defense to step up better than last 2 games, especially at LB

It isn't Heupel, the OC, or the playcalling. Nico and the WRs have to execute better. What they've been doing ties the hands of a play caller.
Agree. You can tell JH dials it down to risk mitigation, and would probably be different if not for best in class D…b/c you’ve seen what he’d like to do from Hooker years.

Come down to a turnover or two, or the Refs get flag happy and put them in bad down and distance over and over again. Will be a LOS game. Tennessee has let this bunch bully them for several years, that needs to end Saturday.

Sorry.....but it IS the play calling and execution . Our OC has to do a better job of calling plays instead of the vanilla calls we have been getting from Halzle

When they have the numbers they run the ball. That’s Tenn. offence! It’s works as it should when you can but a hat on a hat. If we win the one on ones we will win. We lead the conference in rushing, we have the best back in the conference. To say the Offence is predictable is laughable!

Dude. Heupel... the same guy who was "brilliant" a couple of years ago is calling plays. You can't be exotic or unpredictable if your passing game misses on makeable plays as often as this one does.

Just think through the playcalling decision on 1st down following a touchback. They could depend on Hooker to hit open throws so there was always the threat that he'd go over the top unexpectedly. Even once it became 2nd and 10, you could count on him making plays to keep the opposing D off balance. NOW there's too much risk of missing those long shots even if they're open... or passes being dropped. Once behind the sticks, there's a really good chance that this O will not convert. That's in large measure because Nico is still developing as a post-snap coverage reader.

Coaches frequently get too much credit when players make plays that make the playcall look good. Heupel has been pretty open about guys making plays that rescued bad play calls. But RIGHT NOW this O doesn't execute well enough to be more than "vanilla" much of the time. The risk/reward STRONGLY favors minimizing risks and letting the D control the game. That's changing. Teams have found a few things that work against UT's D. MSU ran the ball much better than they should have been able to do. The O has to start executing so the play calling doesn't have to be so vanilla.

They will. Unless the passing game becomes a consistent threat, there won't be good reason not to stuff the run. But that again is NOT primarily a matter of playcalling. You can only call the plays that your guys can execute. WRs have to get off coverage and catch the ball. They have to find holes in zone coverage and make good hot reads. The OL has to hold a pocket. The QB has to read the coverage both before and after the snap, find the weakness, and put the ball on target. Lots of moving parts. It isn't easy. But execution is by far and away the biggest issue right now. It is forcing Heupel to "manage" rather than attack.

I'm not sure what yall mean by vanilla calls. We take 6-7 shots per game and the box dictates how many time we run per game. This is what "take what the defense gives u looks like." If we stop overthrowing and dropping passes we would easily be the #1 offense in the country. That's not play calling that's execution. Realistically every play call can be a big play if you execute the play. Just like if you're not executing, it doesn't matter what play was called.

It’s this some and he likes to try to bookend possessions as well. He wants the last possession of the half in manageable time.
