Last night was talking about UT with my 16 yr old son and he said "Does TN actually have any TE's?".

Great point! Why aren't our TE's being utilized, seemingly at all?

In recent years TE play has become much more widespread, especially in the pros. Seems like such an easy and fairly low risk way of getting a quick 5 or 10 yds and moving the dang chains!

Is it the read option, is it the QB not being able to get through his progressions to the TE (likely), am I missing something here??

Was curious what your opinions are, Flame on!

maybe its the play calling you cannot be predictable. we could not adjust to murphy running for 1st downs and with fast defenses no screens

After Rivera left there is a huge drop off. Downs may improve but probably will be recruited over.

VERY doubtful Downs is a very good TE who will likely get PT until he graduates.

This, like all the other O problems, is a cummulative effect. If the WR's get good enough to draw more attention then the TE gets more space. When the QB gets more comfortable and decisive with reads then the TE gets the ball at the right time and place.

Jones has only repeated it about a million times... the problems are all over. The improvement has to be all over... but one area can be ready to be good but hindered by an area that's lagging.

As the O overall progresses, the TE position should "emerge".

Hmmmm...maybe it all comes down to the left guard?

I'm no expert, so I'm just going to assume that when I see the QB bounce a ball on the ground at the receiver's feet or throw it 3 feet over their heads or just throw it straight to a player on the other team, etc. etc....that it's the QB.

I've noticed the lack of tight end usage :good!:

What had happened was:

1) Our backup to Rivera from last year stole a Macbook from a baseball player and tried to sell it on e-Bay. He now catches TD passes at A&M. Still, glad to have him off the team. Hope he gets his stuff together.

2) Downs was injured last year, slowing his development, but he is starting to put it together.

3) Joseph Ayres blew his ACL and is done at UT.

4) Justin Meredith has been injured and I think his current issue is an uncooperative hamstring. Those things can take a while.

5) Woody Quinn is a volleyball guy who is an athletic freak, but jumping into the SEC at TE is a biiiig jump.

6) AJ Branisel was playing high school ball last year, but looks good considering. He really needs to block people first before he worries about catching a lot of balls. Bigger learning curve than most positions.

7) Alex Ellis is a walk on who is gutsy player. Don't think he has got on the field yet, though.

Basically this leaves us with Downs, Branisel, and if we ever need someone to spike the ball over the goalposts, Quinn.

Joking. Quinn may be the best of them by next year. Just takes time.

Coach bUTch was hoping to have two Tight Ends, however; Woody has not developed as quickly as they had hoped. I don't remember him even seeing the field yet.

Downs has 2 touchdowns but only 5 catches for 22yards?

I would think Worley could hit him a little more often from 10 yards away.

Just looking for ways to extend drives and keep the D off the field for more than 2 minutes.

Luckily we have two of the top TE prospects in the country committed for next year. Well, luck had little to do with it . . .

This is probably the position where we see the biggest turn around from where we are now to where we are going. I mean get ready for some unstoppable TE play by 2015.

Somehow our program got "snake bit", nothing has gone right the past few years, this like everything else will soon pass.

I've seen Worley go to the TE several times this yr but I hate to say only a few of them was catchable. Its hard to have good TE & WR play when u have a QB who can't get it to them

Wait, did you just suggest we move the left guard to QB? I'm confused, but it could work.:whistling:

I agree the 1st pass of game aganist Oregon was to Downs, it hit 5 yards in front of him looked like Worely was throwing it away although Downs was open. Downs has caught about everything that has hit his hands except the one were the Florida player got ejected for launching head to head. Before you all discount the TE play you need to look at the whole role, Downs blocks very good. This O has not got into any kind of rhythm this year, hopefully it will come.

I would think Worley can hit any of our open players. However, he doesn't.
