Go on Record Here about Butch Jones

I am not excited by this hire, no, but I realistically know that I can't even begin to predict how this is all going to pan out. At this point he can just as easily blow the doors off and shock us all as he can just totally suck it up and only eek out 3 wins versus the ooc cupcakes.

However, I believe we will know exactly what we have after the Florida game next year. By then he will have:

1. Hired his staff. If he brings his entire staff from UC this will be his first strike to me.
2. Recruited: While I'm not demanding a top ten class this year, I do hope he at least bumps us up to top 20.
3. Played two top teams: When the whistle blows at the end of the game on Florida that is where we will really have a bigger picture of what we actually have.

Win, lose, or draw, it really doesn't matter as yet again we took a gamble and bet the farm on it. The guy is getting nearly 20 million bucks in 6 installments, and he is far from a sure thing so none of this really matters as he will be here no less than 4 years I can guarantee you that. I really hope the defenders don't try to make this guy out to be some benevolent guy who has sacrificed in hopes to get UT back and running like they did Dooley. On the other hand, if he does win and is showing marked improvement, I would hope the die hard opponents to this hire don't sabotage his success and still aren't satisfied. He has been paid, and paid handsomely to do a job we don't know that he can or can't do, and we will have a much clearer picture of his ability to do so after week 4 next year.

I would not expect much better than 6-6 next year due to the schedule and the number of key starters we are going to lose on offense. IF he hires some SEC recruiters then I think he'll probably get us back to 8-10 win seasons within 4-5 years and IF he manages to do that there will be some Big 10 programs wanting to talk to him.

I'm sure this thread will be bumped many times in the future. That's the point. As of Today, December 8th, 2012, one day after the hiring of Butch Jones.. I want your opinion. How do you think we will be with Butch Jones a year from now? two years? three? four.... so on so on?

Personally, I can see Butch Jones struggling in his first year. By year two we will still struggle. Year three will be when he is evaluated. And at the end of year three he will be fired.

What's your opinion?

Supporting the team 1000%..I can't help to feel just like you. I hope that we are both wrong and would love for everyone that is on the "Butch Bandwagon" to say, "TOLD YOU SO"!!

You people don't understand just how bad Dooley really was apparently. Butch Jones will put out a team that will actually improve over time, he won't make critical coaching mistakes mid game, players will like him, and he won't try to change defensive schemes in a year he is being evaluated.

Derek Dooley and his staff absolutely squandered the talent on this years roster and it is sad that we will lose some of those guys and never see them have the opportunity to shine under a competent head coach.

Jones may not be amazing, but I don't think he will he bad

I don't think Butch Jones was THE right coach for UT. However, I believe that he is A right coach for UT. He fits and can become a dominant figure in SEC sports. Or, he could become Dooley 2.0, too. I expect success and if so, hope is around a looooooong time.

He will win 8 to 9 games at UT if he can play schedules this easy.

Sadly, I think UT's schedule will be at least in the top 30 range or higher every year, which in 2010, Cincy's was 38th, and he finished 4 and 8.

I expect CBJ to gradually improve this program. Next year I'm not expecting too much; 6-6 or 7-5. In year 2 we will probably be a 7 or 8 win team. I believe we hired the right, and feel like he will get this program turned around.

2010 was a similar year in both Dooley and CBJ's lives. Previous coach had just jumped ship and player (and coaching) defections were rampant.

His teams, coaching and recruiting against Big East schools, improved over the next two years ... dramatically. Dooley's did not.

At least we have brought in someone who has shown some success building a program from the ground up. Someone who has shown that as players buy into his program, it turns into wins.

It will all boil down (as it does for any SEC coach) to conference wins. He has won conference games everywhere he's been. I have no reason to believe he won't win conference games in teh SEC.

I am glad you brought that up. UT's schedule strength was actually 46th in 2010, and that was Dooley's best year, and when he had a better record than Jones. The next 2 years, the schedule was significantly harder for Dooley, and really easy for Jones. If Jones had won the last 2 years with schedules at least ranked in the 30th range, I could buy that he is a winner, but he has only played 1 team in the top 30 the past 2 years, and he lost to them.

This argument is flawed. He can only play the teams placed in front of him. The talent level of the teams he faced were similar to his teams talent level. Dooley lost to teams like Vandy, UK and Miss. State where we were vastly more talented. Jones if anything showed at UC he can overachieve.

this guy has to fix the worst defense i have ever seen at UT, try to jump start a mediocre recruiting class, and implement an entire new offense, with a good possibility of using a freshman or red shirt freshman QB. im afraid he will die of pitchfork wounds after season 2.

bUTch Jones will succeed at UT.

That being said, bama and florida won't go away quietly. But Coach Lyle Butch Jones will win at least one of these by his third year with more to follow. GBO

What is overachieving? Never beating a team in the top 30? Getting run out of the stadium by a Dooley coached team? I figured overachieving was beating a team at one point that you are not supposed to. Is the standard just anyone better than Dooley?

On the record...CBJ will make us forget about CDD and the misery of the past 3 years.

He will need time to establish himself in the recruiting area of the SEC...he will have his work cut out for him...it will take time to show those 4-5 stars that UT has turned the corner.

On the other hand...CBJ is handing out fodder for the negas to use in the future, using a lot of strong statements that certainly will be used against him, likely after the first loss. But I see these statements as part of the growing-rebranding process.

On the record...

I, for one, am looking forword to being proven wrong. Although I was hoping for Gruden...(yet not participating in all the furor...i.e. "Grudenites'...) this Butch Jones deal does not have me excited for the future of Tennessee football.

I have a strong feeling that this whole search was botched and we "settled". And listening to Hart...and meeting him in person before the Chick-fil-A kickoff here in Atlanta...he is an "A" typical "short man's syndrome" sufferer. His "jokes' at the Pressor were creepy and uncomfortable...just like he is.

I look forward to being proven wrong. But...we'll see.

2013: 6-6, losses to Oregon, Bama, UF, UGA, SC and a slip up somewhere
2014: 8-4, loses to Oklahoma, Bama, UF and either UGA or SC
2015: 8-4, loses to Oklahoma, Bama, UF and either UGA or SC

This is purely a guess, but we do pick up Oklahoma in 2014 & 15 unless the schedule is changed for some reason. Also, who do we pick up from the west in 2015? I'm thinking either Ole Miss or A&M.

I reserve the right to change my predictions after I see what the new coaching staff can do on the field in 2013 and their first full recruiting class. Until then, I'll take a wait and see approach until they show me what they can do.

I actually think that some of you have a tiny little rain cloud that is above your head at all times.
And I bet people can't wait to be around that every day.

I think we just hired a rising star (and some national media members have used that exact term). While our record might be so-so next season, we will see a marked improvement as to how we play all three phases of the game.

I predict that Butch Jones will win an SEC title at Tennessee and have us in the national mix in a few years. I don't know exactly when, but this guy is a winner. He is going to erase the losing mentality in the players and make them believe they are winners too. That started in his first meeting with the team when he stated that they are the best of the best.

Our ceiling is extremely high with this guy.

I say he's here for 4-5 years then is fired for average seasons and never taking us the next step. 8-5 type years, jmo.

Think we will start seeing progress by the end of year 1
8-4 in year 2.
10 wins in year 3.

I like the hire.

I think we will have a good indication after year one.

He inherits a better team with or without Bray, JH, and CP than many think. LB, TE, and WR are sore spots but there's solid talent and reasonable depth everywhere else.

If he's just 6-6 and isn't competitive in most of the losses then he's more than likely not the guy. We are still in wait and see mode if he wins 7 regular season games. If he wins 8 then we may be on to something good.

Not trying to hedge too much but I think it comes down to recruiting. If he can avg a top 15 finish and around 3.4 stars then I believe he will succeed. If he doesn't then I think he's gone after 3.

Hoping for the best.

This is a solid assessment, also as a poster noted: Saban lost to Lousiana Monroe, but his team got better as the season went on that year. These last 3 years UT seem to play its best football at the start of the year and slide as the season progressed. I could take 7-6, if you saw the team really progress as the year went on. As sjt18 says, we should know what its going to be like after year 1.
