Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

I work with one of the sons of the original owner. I never got a pig burger but I am told they were excellent.
It was a skillet fried pork patty, like sausage between 2 pieces of white bread. Jack or Sarge would ask if you wanted it mild, regular, or hot. Sometimes we would tell them to stand one on its end, meaning really hot, and we would take it back to the dorm, for some unsuspecting newbie to burn their lips on.

It was so spicy, it would make your nose run and bring tears to your eyes. There was nothing there but a pork patty, 2 pieces of bread, and sauce. Best 26 cents I spent in college. Also, on the wall it was spelled pigsburger, with an "s."

What were the names of some of the video stores back in their heyday? I can't think of a single one:confused:

What was the greek place below the international house that burned in the mid-nineties? I used to have Gyros delivered to North Carrick (sp?) all the time.

Has anybody mentioned the old hole in the wall, Brother Jack's on University, near Knoxville College? You had to go to the end of 17th, take a left on Western, and the right at the stop light at the bottom of the hill, across from Middlebrook Pike.

A Pigsburger on white bread was 26 cents when I was at U.T. You had to go next door to the grocery to get a drink. If you wanted to eat there, you had to stand. They had a shelf along the wall at counter height where you could eat.

The cheap "pork patty" was probably their souse meat. Otherwise known as head cheese aka hog head souse aka hog head cheese. By far the worstest baddest "I drunk too much and now I'm gonna puke" experience I ever had was my first time there. After all Knoxville had rolled up its carpets and nowhere else to go. Ate my sammich, then got told what was in souse meat.

Was the one across from Burger King on Cedar Bluff Road just called Cedar Bluff Video?

There was a Movie Capital behind the Burger King next to the old Food Lion (now LMU campus). Even had one of the adults rooms.

Speaking of which...how great were the adult rooms in those places? So creepy and awkward.

The absolute biggest, baddest pee trough that I ever had the pleasure of pissing in had to be the infield latrines at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Keep in mind that this was 25 -30 years ago. It may have changed.

The trough went around the inside perimeter of a rectangular block building that was about 25 feet by 60 feet. The entire trough was pretty deep, and sloped and drained to the left end as you walked in the door. In short, there must have been 50 guys whizzing, shoulder to shoulder, at the same time.

If you were on the low end, near the drain, there was a rushing torrent of urine, about 6 inches deep, traveling downhill about 3 mph. The worst part was if you were unlucky enough to absolutely HAVE to take a dump. There were 3 commodes sitting out in the middle of the room, with no stalls and no doors. There were also people standing in line to pee, and they had to wait near the commodes.

I remember the commodes had no lids. The poor guys had to sit on the rim, and it must have been a good 2 feet high. Their legs were barely bent as they sat on the perch, out in the open in front of maybe 60 guys, some just 5 or 6 feet from them. So help me God, I would have sh!t in my pants before I used those commodes.

I was usually pretty well drunk anytime that I went there. That was back in my college days. We would go over "after all Knoxville had rolled up its carpets, and there was nowhere else to go."

Several years later, 3 of us went after a U.T. basketball game . It wasn't that late and we were sober. I never saw the place in the daylight until just before it went away.

Anyone remember when the Marriott Downtown was the Hyatt and they had a really cool Sunday Brunch up on the top floor?

We would go when friends and family would visit from out of town and I remember as a kid being so excited to ride the glass elevators.

Oh yeah, I worked there for a while. Great restaurant, they even served rosin potatoes which you can't find anywhere these days.

Seems like the one I'm thinking of was where Papa John's is now (I guess that's not exactly across from BK but a little farther north). Could have sworn it was just called Cedar Bluff Video.

Edit: Meant to mention in reference to those creepy adult rooms, I had friends who worked in video stores and apparently it wasn't unheard of to catch creepy dudes fapping in the adult rooms. I always thought that was hilarious, partly because... just... why?? Rent the damn video and go home!

Rookies was a dump, but man it had character. I’ve only left one bar smelling more like cigarettes than that place.

Used to work there. It was right next to Walgreen's which used to be located where Aaron's is now.

I worked for a restaurant in Kingsport that served the rosin baked potatoes called Skoby's. I have been looking for a place that has them for a while, found one place in Texas and also found kits where you can make them at home. Such a great potato.

I worked at the Video Store off Ebenezer and Kingston Pike in the strip Makl where Dicks is, but it would have been behind Dicks Sporting Goods
