Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Very sorry for the demise of Skoby's. Loved the taters, the salad bar, and the steaks.

This makes me feel old. When did it shut down? 20 years ago? I honestly can't remember

I remmber it was a culinary school for awhile after the restaurant closed, and now it's Pal's headquarters

I believe around 2004 was the end. I was up there this weekend and definitely enjoyed some Pal's.

Here are a few more I remember:

1. Rax's in Farragut. It was right behind Farragut's baseball field. Great milkshakes

2. There was a Mexican restaurant back in the early 80's near campus (somewhere around 11th and Highland) call Los Charo or El Charo. Anyone remember that?

3. What was the restaurant at the World's Fair site where you could cook your own steak? That place was great.

We would always stop at the one on Magnolia, or the one on the highway in Jeff City when we came back home from Knoxville.

I had Kay’s for the first time this summer. I was not impressed. Perhaps they were better in their glory days.

Anyone ever go to the Hungry Fisherman Restaurant? It was on a little island and had a big light house?

I remember eating at the Hungry Fisherman. Maybe it's just my childhood imagination playing tricks on me where everything seemed bigger, but I seem to remember there being a long driveway leading up to it.

While both franchises at the time, Jefferson Ward (before that Montgomery Ward) and Children's Palace were both go-to places for toys. Jefferson Ward was a lot like Target. I remember the arcade games in the entrance, particularly Dragon's Lair.

And there was KB Toys too.

Place was a joke. Why would I go out to cook my own steak?

Never could figure it out.

Me either... the only time I ate there, I was waiting for a spot on the grill to cook a couple of steaks. One opened up and I started to place my steaks on the grill... dude comes back and looks at me like he is gonna bite my head off, and puts his under cooked steak back on the grill. Apparently I did not understand the rules of the shared grill.

You were perfectly in the right to smash his head on the grill and sear his ear.

I'm pretty sure it was clearly written on the rules board by the front door.

That's how I remembered the Hungry Fisherman as well.

I thought that Food City bought the name, and it is not the same as the old days. I'm not sure it was ever gourmet ice cream, but it was as good as any at the time.

My mom would take us to buy our clothes at some children's clothing store called something like Stewart's or Stuart's on Kingston Pike, not far from Sequoyah Hills.

Kay's was the place to go until Baskin Robbins opened.

Yep. Then there was the kid's store (same one?) where Open Chord Music is across from Books-a-Million on Kingston Pike.
My young son strated climbing a display and I caught it before it fell on him, but not before all the clothes slid off.

I remember this one, vividly, but props to anybody who knows the name, because I can not recall for the life of me.
