Good Signs

Many who post here couldn't work for me. I get rid of people with negative attitudes or who create drama in the work place. We have too much to do for that to work. ;)

If you don't have something positive to contribute then please take your shots at players to another thread. There are plenty of them.

You tell 'em, sjt18.

I know this sounds like sour grapes, cause it is. But there's no way that kid makes that throw more than once out of 20. It was absolutely perfect. When it was live I thought it wasn't even close that he was out of bounds.... then I saw the replay. It was absolutely perfectly executed by the QB and WR. And it just pi$$ed me off. That's just the kind of crap that happens when we play Florida.... they pull off plays like that and we DON'T. I know it's because they're better but it's still frustrating. Wurffel was not better than Manning... yet he made throws for 3rd, 4th down coversions and tds when Peyton didn't. Ugh.

Screw that, here's how it should work in this thread:

The team wasn't milling about after a UF score. They were getting lined up to play some football.

I saw no discord when things went against us, they exhibited the snap and clear mentality we've heard so much about.

JW was playing to win right up until the interception. The team wanted the ball back to try again. You could see JW leave the field after the turnover, not being pleased but watching in hope he got the ball back. I think this was a refusal to back down attitude. :rock:

This game wasn't a blowout, Florida had to work for the win unlike too often before. I think if we had a rematch this weekend, we'd win.

This team may not come with a registered gun (QB);
But it sure is a bit more fun;
To cheer for than last year's one.

The defense is improved, Kicking game is improved, special teams improved, the offense....well, the defense is improved. The coaching is somewhat improved and then we have the offense that is a work in progress. It's going to be hard to score on SEC teams with this thing we call the offense.

Coaching just somewhat improved??? Are you serious? CBJ and staff is 10X more effective than last year's coaching staff. This team lacks any real playmakers, but they are playing as fundamentally sound as I've seen any UT team in many years (yes even tackling is better, not perfect but better). Please keep in mind that this staff inherited a group of grossly underdeveloped athletes (yes 3* and 4* out of high school but no development since they've been on campus) with a loser's mentality. They are making tremendous strides because of.... COACHING. For the life of me I don't understand how some people on here think that a coach can just waltz in and change 8 years of losing in just 8 months. If I remember correctly even the great Saban was right at 50% w/l his first year.:peace2:

I think your 8 years of losing is wrong. Yes that is what happened but the mentality started with Dools. Players didn't respect him. They respected Kiff and Fulmer in 08. Yes we had losing seasons in the past few years, but players didn't quit on Fulmer and just say, "Oh golly, we are down a field goal at the half, we're done and can't win."

You are correct that we have not had losing seasons for the last 8 years, But the point was that UT has not had the champions mentality in at least 8 years and I can promise you that UT was on the verge of becoming the Oakland Raiders or the Detroit Lions after last year's debacle. It is incredibly difficult to exorcise a culture of losing. These coaches are really doing a great job with this team as they re-educate them on what it takes to win. I for one like what I am seeing and hope that it continues. The wins will come as CBJ continues this process.:peace2:

Positive - They are bruisers. They walked into the swamp and walked out. Florida walked in then limped off on crutches.

Positive - Penalties..keeping them low.

Butch had to clean out Dooley's bookshelf when he arrived on campus..

LOL- I'm pretty sure I saw him going over parts of that book with Sunseri on the sidelines last year when they were trying to figure out what to do when time was running out against Missouri.:peace2:

I bet a lot of FBS coaches could probably learn a thing or two if they read that book cover to cover.

I'll be honest for 5 bucks I'd leaf through as just a fan of the game. I can't tell you the difference between a nickel or dime package. I do know what a prevent win D looks like though.

It seems like we have played much better in the second half of the last 3 games than we did under Dooley. Even with a big deficit, these players aren't quitting. They've kept fighting.

Moreso last week than at Oregon, but when the game was slipping away it appeared that we continued to play until the clock ran out. While that sounds petty and worthless considering the contest was more or less decided its a bigger deal considering this team had layed down in years past. The end game is not being in the spot to even worry about it in the future, but you have to start somewhere.

The Tennessean has an article today about our 3rd down defense. Basically, our defense is statistically one of the worst in the country at preventing an offensive 3rd down conversion. That downright sucks. Sounds negative, right?

Well, the article indicated that the defense is working their butts off to change this stat. It sounded like the seniors on the defense are stepping up to put in the work (film room, etc.) to address the issue. Attitude reflects leadership. If the D is working outside of practice to get better, that tells me they want to win. They're not just going through the motions. Rather, they're putting in the extra work that will pay dividends as the season progresses and also signals a total culture change.

Understatement of the year. UT DIDNT play in the 2nd half under Dools...ever.

His KOs were good...his punts were good...and his FGs were down the middle...he has improved 100%.

Thanks OP for a positive thread. Not that everything about this team or program are all positive right now, but that the positives deserve to be discussed and there are a thousand negative threads (some started by me, actually) for all the other stuff.

tallyho, what strikes me about Palardy's tremendous (and fast) improvement is that I'm pretty sure Butch is coaching special teams himself. So any credit there goes directly to the Flat-Topped One.

Dragon18, that first year of Saban at Bama is when Louisiana-Monroe went to Tuscaloosa and beat them. He turned that into a HUGE motivational factor and drove hoe the importance of buying in to his system after that, and it paid off. He also used it at the end of the year to oversign a huge class and then told a bunch of Shula players that they suddenly had a career-ending injury they didn't know about.

JMS, I disagree somewhat about 2008 and Fulmer. From my perspective the players certainly did quit on him for most of the year. Then when he was fired they completely quit on him and UT for the Wyoming game. After it all sank in Fulmer used his last few games to inspire the kids to finish strong, and I was thrilled to be at the Kentucky game when we killed them and the team played great despite a storm and freezing weather to send the Fulmer's off the field that night with a win. But there is certainly no doubt that the players bought in and respected Kiffin early on, especially evidenced by the trips to the Swamptic Tank and Tuscaloser. They played hard for that staff until the Ole Miss game, then they pretty much bottomed out. I'm not sure how much more of Kiffin and Ogre's antics the kids would've taken if they hadn't bolted when they did. I think the roses were losing their petals already, so to speak.

They didn't respect Fulmer. The off the field problems illustrate that undeniably.

OTOH, there is a thread for talking about Fulmer. This isn't it. Can we PLEASE talk about POSITIVE things JONES has done?
