Good Signs

Despite the fact that Florida ran the ball, I believe, 56 times and maintained possession for roughly 39:00, the defense did not exhibit signs of quitting or of being physically whipped in the 4th quarter. That speaks well for their physical conditioning, particularly in light of their current depth, and the fact that Butch's message regarding mental conditioning is beginning to resonate. Florida did gash us on a few perimeter plays which underscore deficiencies in speed at certain positions, but the caliber of defensive players coming in the '14 class will begin to directly address those problems.

For positives I was happy to finally see a pretty long FG made by Palardy. I will admit I had chalked it up to a miss. I'm hoping the take on Worley actually getting to play loose might be the case. Other than that I'm not sure what other positives to look forward to or at least keep my hopes up. And dang am I trying to. Heck I'm one of few able to see positives during the dooley era, so I'm able to find them when they are there. Just having trouble finding things I can feel confident they can turn out. Hopefully as the season goes on some that r sitting on the fence will start to actually turn into positives.

Sorry SJT, but have to do this cause it seems that many on here missed the grit that these experienced players had last year. Many act as if this year they are playing until the end for the first time, but they were doing this last year. Ie..USCe game was 21-7 at half and we ended up taking the game to the end. Heck even the '10 LSU game had grit after Jefferson had a long run for a TD from scrimmage to start the game. These Vols know how to take it to the end, so acting like it's a new coach thing is just ridiculous.

I do think now with Worley being the solidified starter, his improvement should be steady. I've seen enough flashes of success to realize that his development is happening before our eyes and with time, it should continue.

He's our best option at QB and we should get behind him.

This is a quality thread, sjt.

I went apoplectic with the Peterman start on many levels, and I feel strongly if the coaches had pulled him after turnover #2, Tennessee wins that game. It hurts to watch Tennessee lose to the worst Florida teams of a generation.

There were bright points as you rightly say: defense is getting back to the Wilcox level, Worley improved considerably I thought.

I really understand what he was trying to do. Ultimately, it turned out to be a bad decision that as you say probably cost them the game... but I give him a lot of credit for having the courage to make that decision. To me, it indicates a guy trying to win instead of a guy trying not to lose. Of all the things about what Fulmer became in the 2nd half of his career... that's probably what bothered me most.

Not sure they're at Wilcox level yet. I thought he was good but I fully appreciate how good Wilcox was now. That guy is solid as a DC.

Team flat quit at Vandy last year...

Kentucky the year before from the start

but the positive is this

they are beating the ap's and western tuckeys by large margins this is different than beating UAB's in OT type games

blowing out the teams we are suppose to blow out instead of letting the GA States of the world hang around for too long

Anybody know why Foreman is't playing? He was on the field alot in the first two game and had 1 int. against WK, but I haven't seen him in the last two games. Is he injured?

I watched the press conference today twice as I was feeding our baby lol! And I truly see the emotion in Butch Jones that has been sorely missing from this program for years. Yes it sucks to have lost to Florida - especially with their offensive issues (which seem to have taken a step forward with their new QB). But we have to move forward - the players can't dwell on that, there is a ton of football left to be played. We have to stay together as a fan base too - the recruits see that and above all we HAVE to keep this class together! So let's rally and get behind our team! Go Vols!!

In this case, raw speed.

He seems to be a good Nickel guy.

Sutton/Foreman are low/mid 4.4 guys.

Incoming guys Moreley (4.35), Payne (4.4) and Gaulden (4.45) have speed. If we land Berry we get another low 4.4 guy. If we land Jackson we get another low 4.4 guy.

I don't see Swafford pushing for PT at CB with guys who are taller and faster already there. Sutton has played more than well enough to keep his CB spot. With that crop of players we will have youth in depth but we'll definitely (finally) look to have speed at depth.

The game slowed down for Worley against Fla.
SA will be his break out.
Butch may get his signature against GA or SC at home.
One of them will help like Fla did.

I agree with this. If we keep improving week to week, we have chance to win at home against one of these two.

A few improvements
1) Penalties and negative plays are almost non-existent
2) Croom is improving weekly (including blocking)
3) Brewer has transitioned to LB and playing solid football
4) Outside of Oregon catching us in the whirlwind of hurry-up we have been in position to make plays even when not properly executed
5) Creating many more negative plays and turnovers on defense
6) Palardy is one of the best punters in the country and reliable with the field goals and PAT's

hustle.even if some of "our guys"are a step slower than the other team, they are full tilt after them.Hitting hard, not waving at the other players as in the past.Out of position will get you a couple of arm tackle attempts, but, everybodys working. Not quitting.Last couple of years,we saw several "hang dog"looks after a bad play,Proud of them

People are discussing the Worley/ Peterman fiasco, but I find it more frustrating to look at UF's QB play.

UF's starter was knocked out in the 1st quarter. I never like to see a kid get hurt but it happened. As far as I know Murphy had never had any meaningful playing time. Why is it that our opponents are able to get production out of their back-ups when UT has struggled with that for years?

The pass Murphy threw along the sideline on a 3rd and 10 early in the third quarter was beautiful. Worley and Peterman couldn't make that throw if you gave them no defenders and 20 balls each.

That's what leaves me shaking my head. You have a great chance to get the ball back and tie it up, instead they complete the 3rd and 10 for 31 yards and ultimately score a td on the drive. 24-10.

Sometimes teams make plays. As much as it pains me to say it that was a great play. What could the defense have done to stop. Our db was on him. They just made a play.

Some peoples children. Geeeez

Positives for me so far:

1. Our play in the second half seems to be better than the first - this is the complete opposite than under Dooley the last 3 years, and to me is the sign of a good coaching/scheming and adjusting.
2. Discipline. We still rank #2 in the nation in penalties per game at 2.25 (per the NCAA web site today). Again, points to effective coaching.
3. Palardy!

I have questioned the staff too. I started this thread so that folks who disagree with me like you do can give reasons with specific examples that we should believe in them.

Reading some of your posts on your thread, and it kind of made me wonder.. Are you a 45 year old woman going through menopause. If not you sure act like it.

On a positive note we will get to see Riley Ferguson play Saturday. I hope he takes the reins and never looks back.

They ALWAYS make a play when they need to against UT. That was a game changing play. They made it. UT didn't.

Jones says winning spreads and it breeds more winning. These kids want to win! Lets start this week! GBO!!

Anyone notice how many tennessee players are in the denver-oakland game tonight i believe there is 5 denarius moore. Peyton manning. Robert ayers. Colquitt and rivera

Something that really, really stood out to me is traditionally - in addition to beating us on the scoreboard - Florida has been beating us up. There is usually 3 or 4 that have been banged up and unable to play the rest of the year. This year - even though we lost the game - we beat the holy shiz out of Florida. We knocked out arguably their two most important players and maimed a few other. This only happens if highly conditioned athletes are playing emotionally and at full speed the entire game. We might have lost the game - but I think we cost the Gators a couple of games down the road. I loved our aggressive play. We stood toe to toe with the Gators and I guarantee you they knew that they were in a war not just a battle.

I see better days ahead - better get on board - Volnation.

Also, I was ready to get out there a make a tackle for Butch. Loved his sideline demeanor. I think he gets it.

The sideline demeanor is so on point. He was giving Muschamp a real run for his money at one point, and I loved every second of it.
