Grading Bob’s call

Bobs call was as if Vols just sealed a 56-0 victory over New Orleans A and M. YOU JUST BEAT ALABAMA Bob. He didn't even have the excitement of a neutral announcer doing a national broadcast. I don't need Joe Tessitore level excitement...but come on. It's a game sealing pick vs Alabama. D- and that's being generous. I can just hear his call after winning national title game. "That's it. Tennessee wins the national championship. Stay tuned for more postgame brought to you by Pilot Truck Stops."
And Ward's call of the Stoerner fumble was even worse than Bob's here.

That's not on Pat imo, it's on Bob. You can hear the crowd cheer long before Bob fumbles through his vague explanation of what happened. I appreciate Pat telling us what happened while Bob is still trying to figure out which of his catch phrases he is going to use to describe the play. Bob is slower than a 7 year itch. A kicker could kick a field goal from across the river before Bob could figure out if a 20yd field goal is good or not.
So let me get this straight: Bob is bad because he's terribly slow, but Ward was great because the RB was still at the 20 according to him when in actuality, he was already handing the ball to the ref? Makes sense.

Yes, Mr's Kesling...because John Ward did it for dramatic effect and everyone on the radio already knew it was a touchdown. Kesling does it on a 2 yard gain on 1st and 10.

Cute with the name, like that hasn't been beaten into the ground, but by all means stick in 2012. But back to the topic at hand, Ward wasn't infallible had numerous botches and bad calls, but everyone conveniently ignores those.

He did fine on that call. He doesn't get them all wrong and I never said he did. He gets a lot wrong though. He's had 25+ years on the job and he's arguably worse now than when he started in 1999.

Very funny story from the late President Ronald Reagan on his early years as a sports radio broadcaster in Des Moines, Iowa, that younger people may not have heard. He was calling a live MLB game, Cardinals vs. Cubs---from his Des Moines studio, using only the news wire tickertape print coverage of the game! You can probably guess what happened...
[01:47 - 04:47]

The story of how Reagan got his first job in radio during the Great Depression is funny, but also inspiring for anyone facing obstacles to living their dream. The interview ends with his approach to announcing a live sports event--painting a word picture--that certainly fits in this thread.
[07:23 to end]

Great stuff. Never knew how much creative augmenting off a coded slip of paper was done. Before my time… but not by much.

I'm surprised at how many posters complained about Bob's energy level. Really? Does everyone around you have to feel what you're feeling?

I only want one thing from broadcast coverage of a game, whether it's radio or TV--tell me or show me what happened! That's all I want to know.

I don't care how you feel about it, what you had to eat last night, or what you think about what so-and-so back in the studio is wearing today. If Lifetime Network wins a contract to cover football games, I'm sure they'll be eager to sign you to do the broadcast.

And unless TV coverage has improved drastically since 2016, radio does the better job of not only telling me what happened, but who substituted for whom, what's going on between two players on the opposite side of the field, and who is injured. TV will actually keep me from seeing 2 or 3 plays a game because they're still replaying the previous play! As for substitutions, why not show who's coming in while the boys are gabbing in the box. Do we have to have a camera showing them talking to know that they're talking?

The boys in the booth can talk about one thing while the camera is showing me something else. I may be a guy but I can still handle that level of multitasking!

Not to brag, but I can also read while using the bathroom.

It ain’t bingo

Everyone has an opinion. Bob’s got some detractors and some fans. And that’s OK.

Addressing grading of his posted INT call, what did you not like? How did he miss the call?
I agree with you, I don't think Ole Bob is all that bad myself. I don't need an announcer to get me excited.

Anyway, I appreciate the thread, it provided much needed entertainment on our bye week. It's been funny seeing us whine about something different.

Some of you young guys just don't get it with John Ward. You go back and find one play and then critique his call. If you were a true fan during that time, you had to listen to the games week in and week out to get the full appreciation of an artist at work. John loved the Vols and he was able to put us in the stadium and see the games thru his call. His amount of enthusiasm and disappointment was both professional and what the Vol fans wanted and needed to hear.

John Ward and Bill Anderson were Tennessee Football to those of us across the state who couldn't come to the games.

This video, IMO, shows more of an indictmentof Bob's radio announcing than anything I've saw so far . When the university, on a hype highlight video, uses the neutral tv announcers calls more than your own radio announcers calls on big plays shows a problem. Sean McDonough shows more emotions on big plays than Bob did, and Bob is one that is suppose to be the UT "homer."

Blob is just as boring and stale as the entire broadcast is, same format, same music, same worn out slogans, can still hear Tim Priest's question to the player interview ". . . . take us through that plaayhh", whole broadcast format needs to be scrapped and bring in an up and coming play by play announcer with a fresh perspective.
Nailed it!

I know I’m about to get lit up. That’s OK and not new. 😀

I’ve been a fan of Bob since he replaced King Ward. I listen to games on radio often and he’s done a good job following a true VOL legend.

I’ll give Bob an A- on this call. I got excitement during the call but not that jumping up and down screaming I don’t like. He also filled in with good info (2nd INT and a walk-on). He also got time and location on field correct. Great call.

OP, I’m a fan of Kesling too. I understand it’s difficult to follow a legend such as John Ward but I think he does a decent job. From time to time he gets a name wrong or mispronunciation of it but he is clear and I for one, understand his words.

Because he doesn’t necessarily call the game with Orange colored glasses on all the time, I think he is professional about his game calls.

I think a lot of it is personal preference. I like the way Bob calls a game. Some people prefer Mike Keith's style..I think he sounds like a tween that's just won tickets to see Taylor Swift.

I do miss Tim Priest, they balanced each other well. Tim was a little more excitable and was quite funny at times.
Yeah I honestly enjoyed Bob's calls when he had Tim Priest as a color guy. Bob and the new Color guy just don't have good chemistry on-air.
