This entire thing will focus on how it impacts the recruiting of TN which is why it is here and not "Around the NCAA".

We have an all star staff. We also are at a time of year when rivals will throw out anything they can to put doubt in the mind of players that their favorite coach will be there.

We are in no danger of losing Lane Kiffin or Monte Kiffin. That sentence may seem obvious, but it gives us stability that some programs do not have. I think it is extremely unlikely that Orgeron leaves, Cregg leaves, Ausmus leaves etc. Eddie Gran and Lance Thompson are the two men we need to worry most about and there is no strong indication that either man is leaving.
Here is a roundup of firings and how they impact us.

1. Charlie Weis is fired at ND. Has not happened today, probably will happen tomorrow. This impacts TN in that there are 2-3 prospects from ND we are on. None of them seem to be committed primarily because of Weis, I would guess that we still have no shot at Hendrix, maybe a slight shot at Rees, a decent shot at Martin at DE and there may be another player we talk to. Many of the guys will want to wait to see who ND brings in to replace Weis. I do not anticipate that Urban Meyer will end up there, although that is the most beneficial rumor to us. We do not want this hire to be an amazing one publicity wise (John Gruden etc.) because we compete lots with ND for national recruits and have only been losing Catholic ones.

2. Kragthorpe is out at Louisville. This impacts us only in that some of our current staff may be discussed. Fulmer is also an option for them.

3. Al Groh is canned at UVA. This helps us with Morgan Moses, a massive OL who has 4 years to play after getting even better and stronger after a year at Hargrave. He is great friends with former UT coach Latrell Scott and may follow him somewhere else, but UT looks to be in good shape with Moses if we want him.

4. Bobby Bowden looks like he has fallen and cannot get up. The poor man looks befuddled right now and he is probably not going to be telling Jimbo Fisher who to bring is as the new D.C. which means he probably needs to move on. I do not see Jimbo setting the world on fire in terms of this recruiting class, so the turmoil in Tallahassee is good for us.

5. Coaches out at Akron, Marshall, Western KY, UNLV etc. All of these should have zero impact on us.

6. Colorado keeping their coach. This only impacts how many really "good" HC jobs are available. Good jobs would not be teams like the ones in 5, but would be teams from BCS conferences with some tradition and hope for future success. What good jobs might be opened will be answered by questions like is Maryland keeping Ralph Friedgen? Is Mangino staying at Kansas? It looks like Rich Rod and Zook are both getting another year. We know that there are not many name coaches out there who do not have jobs, to the extent that Fulmer actually would be one of the maybe 3 biggest non NFL hires name wise a school could make along with Tubberville. If lots of good jobs open up, it increases the chances that...

7. Charlie Strong leaves Florida. This would be great for us this season. Elam's relationship is supposed to be with Urban Meyer, but lots of the other UF recruits we like love Charlie Strong and it would negatively impact their recruiting class to lose him. They also are not going to find a guy with 2 recent National Titles as a DC to take that job at UF. It is a great position, but whoever they bring in will be someone who will be proving themselves, as opposed to someone as proven as Charlie. Charlie wants to be a head coach, we all know that, but if he hates all the jobs out there, he could wait until a better program he thinks he has a shot at taking as a job (Georgia, Michigan, Miami etc.) opens up, even if none of us think he would get that job.

Look forward to your thoughts. Thanks for reading.

Very in-depth look at how coach changes will affect us. Luckily Tennessee will only gain from the coaching changes this season, and hopefully the next few years as well. I know its a long shot, but it would send Kiffin and co into a recruiting frenzy if weiss was fired and cum too his place. The Gators may be able to pick up another good coach, but none will be a better receruited than cum. Excited to see what happens!

It's being rumored that Marshall may try to make a run at Orgeron but there's no way he goes there...

Wait, mikehamiltonfan started a thread? At least it was quick and to the point...

I think we'll benefit possibly from the firings of Weis, Groh, and Bowden. But who knows we may not even need any possible decommits because we only have 6 scholarships left.

For the record I love seeing ND lose on a daily basis, and also Gerhart from Stanford is by far my favorite player besides UT players he is very fun to watch.

I have thought from the beginning that Marshall would be a good choice for Fulmer, but think he has his eyes set on UVA or Louisville.... But I think Fulmer could make Marshall legit again

Nah, hes the DC in waiting. Unofficially anyway...

Who wouldn't want to coach with Monte for a few years and be known already as a fantastic recruiter. We don't need to worry. He may use the situations (as they all do) to generate a raise.

Memphis hired Larry Porter. He's a good recruiter so that could hurt us in Memphis some. It could also hurt LSU. Which should help Frank Wilson... assuming Porter doesn't try to snag him

I think it hurts Ole Miss and Miss State more than us. Having a recruiter with good ties coming to that area over the long term will weaken or make Ole Miss and MSU have to work that much more.

Doubt it hurts Tennessee at all in Memphis. Other SEC schools rely on Memphis area talent a hell of a lot more than Tennessee does.

This is picky, but UT has a much better chance with Rees than Martin IMO.... other than that good info MHF.

Sure was, but that was prior to him tanking his conference games, and admitting he made a mistake in recruiting Cody. As much as they drink in Boulder, their alums still pay attention to the results on the field.

From the AP article: Memphis Tigers hire LSU Tigers' Larry Porter to rebuild program - ESPN

Porter said he had thought about coaching the Tigers ever since watching their basketball team play Kansas in the 2008 national championship game.

At the time, LSU was visiting the White House to be honored for its national championship in football. Porter said he thought the Memphis football program could reach the same level, and he wanted to be a part of that if the position came open.

I love how Porter is claiming that Tiger High can be a national title contender...in football.

Would you expect him to come in and say how he hopes to carry on the tradition of mediocrity and irrelevance?

If Frank Wilson or Eddie Gran were to leave UT and go to LSU to take over Porter's job, how would this impact us? I would hate to lose either of them. I know they are great recruiters and great assets to this staff. If either of them left who would be the front runner to take the open spot?
