Greatest guitarist of all time

There is no way to be defenitive in saying who is the best off all-time.

Guys like Pettrucci/Vai/Satch/Malmsteen will blow you away with their technical ability but their music is so emotionaly detatched that you get bored after a few songs.

You have to be innovative with enough technical ability to play with the best of them and enough thought into the music that you don't seem like a robot pounding out as many notes as you can.

Hendrix is probably the best as far as a total package is concerned, then again there can be fair arguments made for several guys.

And we thought we couldn't agree on guitarists.

Lots of guys can shred. To say that he is 20 years ahead of some of the greatest technical guitarists of all-time is absurd.

Dime was great. For his genre, he is at or near the top of the list.

Overall though, comparing him to other legendary players kinda leave him more than a few steps behind.

Wylde is every bit as good as Dime.

You've obviously not heard what I have. 20 maybe 30 years ahead of EVERYONE yes.

Ill post some BLS next to some Pantera if we need proof. If I can stop laughing at Zak Wylde's lyrics long enough.

Absurd? Really? Zakk Wylde is a bad mother******. He is certainly in Dime's realm. He can basically do anyting that he wants on a guitar, not sure what his lyrics have to do with his playing ability...oh, nothing.

He isn't 20 to 30 years ahead of anyone, everything he is doing has been done, 20 to 30 years ago man. Steve Vai, Satch Boogie, Malmsteen, Pretrucci, Eddie Van Halen....I could go on and on and on listing guys who can shred.

Buckethead is amazing, no debating that, but he isn't 20-30 years ahead of everyone else, nobody is.

Wylde was a BMF with Ozzy, but lyrics definitely influence how you hear the rest of the music. BLS is unbearable thanks to the lyrics. Imagine Justin Bieber singing with Wylde playing. Would you still be into that? It doesnt take away from his playing ability, but it can make it hard to listen to.

All sound like 80s fossils.

Listen to how Buckethead incorporates his distortion, samples, and all the other instruments together in a one man band. Listen to Bucketheadland 2 or the Elephantman's Alarm Clock and tell me, really mean it too that those don't sound at least a decade ahead of anything Van Halen or Malmsteen's put out ever.

A little hating on my TV screen
A little hating in the news that I read
Lay to rest a soul so kind
Rewarding the wrong
Feeding The Twisted Mind

You Lookin' At Me
Forever hurt
Forever bleed
It ain't black
It ain't white
It ain't wrong
Lord knows it ain't right

Jesus,
Hell Yeah, What do we do?
Jesus,
Can you hear us screaming up above?
Lord?
I guess we were just...

(thats one bad ass dude there)

EVH is one of maybe a handful of players that can be credited with changing the way the instrument is played.

Your disdain for Zakk is noted, lyrics aside, as good as it gets on the guitar.

This thread has gone from a debate about guitar players to one rabid fan base defending their leader and then attacking the other fans and their leader.

Come on.

Oh. I guess that is what we do here on the VolNation.

Carry on, my friends.

All in taste...

I thought all the obvious notables would have been mentioned by now. I'm more into the bluesy style guitarist. That being said, I think there is Page & Hendrix and then there is everyone else....

My personal greats list(all blues style);

BB King
Alvin Lee
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Herring
Peter Green
Jack White ;)

Man, this list could go on and on...

^ If you're going to go with a shredder, Jason Becker is the only choice. IMO hands-down best raw talent to ever have lived. Twenty years since he's been diagnosed with Lou Gherig's and the speed and technique he had has yet to be matched.

He's my person favorite. Santana has one of the all-time great mixes of feel and skill, but his style is a bit narrow. Same goes for guys like Satch and Vai.

My final answer is a bit cliched but I can't really think of anyone else: Hendrix. Possibly the most revolutionary musician of the last hundred years.

I just searched for him on youtube and I personally think he is terrible(sound wise). I am not saying your wrong but, all he is really known for is the speed of his solos.(from what I have read)

Yes, I'm aware that most of his guitar music is complete wankery (as I call it) but, I have been studying guitar some 8-9 years now and his stuff is still mind-blowing to me from a purely technical standpoint.

Shawn Lane and Jeff Loomis
Not speed. Speed and technique.

Not saying his original music is great or even good, just that I find him to be the most technically impressive. That is all.
