Greatest Plays in Vol History

Here's a good one from a relatively recent Era: Montario Hardesty at home vs Cal. He swept right, ran into a wall of about 5 guys and was essentially stopped dead. He kept his legs churning, shrugged off every single one of them and broke away for a touch down en route to a beat down over a Pac 10 team. it's at 2:34 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwI7DCtUbN4

THAT was indeed a great play. Montario showed who he was on that play. Sheer and pure effort and willpower.

2007 at Neyland, we are trailing USC. Time is running out and A. Foster runs along the left sidelines and " of course" he fumbles. Jacques McClendon was 5 yards ahead of A. Foster and the ball bounced in front of his feet. He jumps on the ball so we maintain possession. We end up scoring and winning.
Had we lost that game, we would not have gone to the 2007 S.E.C. Championship game.

DeSean Jackson's punt return for a TD in the '07 Cal vs UT game was one of the sickest I've ever seen. Unfortunately, we were on the receiving end of that beauty.

Quite true, but I prefer to place greater emphasis on the manner in which Robert Meachem absolutely gutted Cal the previous year, with 5 receptions for a "career-high 182 yards and two touchdowns, [including] an 80-yard touchdown reception on the second play of the third quarter [which] blew open the game against the Golden Bears" (Robert Meachem Bio - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics).

Jay Graham's 68/69 yard TD run up the middle against Ohio St in the Citrus Bowl

Bill Duff's stuffing stop of Eddie George at the goal line in that same game.............

I was looking for this post... That game was awesome, after graham ran that in we were all taunting Eddie George by yelling his name. Man, that was good times.

I don't recall having seen this play referenced, but, for jawdropping athleticism, it would be hard to surpass a successful two-point conversion attempt during the 1974 Clemson game which gave us a 29-28 victory. I attended that game as a freshman and it remains one of the most incredibly athletic plays that I have ever witnessed, one made by Condredge Holloway and Larry Sievers. Condredge retreated and reversed field back to the 19 yard line before heaving the ball deep into the back of the endzone, just as he was going down. Larry made a tremendous leaping catch to give us the victory. If you haven't seen this play before, fast-forward to the 5:25 mark of Tennessee Football - John Ward Announcer - Greatest Play Calls - YouTube.

Incidentally, a LOT of the plays mentioned in this thread are featured in this brief film clip.

Wes Brown's interception returned for touchdown against Vanderbilt, busted knees and all, he drug half the team into the end zone. I think it was 2008 or 2009.
That was 2009. So funny...Kiffin was jumping up and down and shoved Crompton to the ground.

There was a play that I can clearly visualize but can't recall precisely when it happened. Perhaps you guys can identify it based on my description. I am almost positive that it occurred in the early '90s (most likely Shuler's last year or Peyton's first) and that it took place within the context of a bowl game. In any event, it was a long pass, beautifully thrown, close to the sideline at the top of the screen. Our receiver made an incredible, finger-tip catch, one in which he dived as far as he could stretch out and caught the ball in a position that was parallel to both the playing field and the sideline. It was not a scoring play but set us up in scoring position at or inside the opponent's 20. I somehow think the receiver might have been Craig Faulkner.

I will be interested to see if any of you can identify this play based on these clues.

Eric Berry knocking the snot out of Knowshon Moreno

Please don't take this the wrong way but, you know, I see and hear people talking about that hit a lot. And I personally don't think it was all that special or vicious. What made it a replay favorite was the sound of Berry's pads popping into KM's pads it seems to me. He was just about out of bounds and clearly was already slowing down. Berry came flying in at an angle and did pop him a good hit. But the SOUND of the hit was what the announcers immediately talked about during the relays. There must have been a TV mic nearby.

KM got right up, albeit a little slowly. It was a decent hit but, to me, just an average one for Berry.

That said...whatever works for you, brother!

Man you posted this before I could. While I have many memories of great plays this one combined with John War calling it is my favorite.

You'd have been in traction for months had you taken the hit. Berry decleated him and he took himself out of the game.

This is not true. KM came out of the game and Caleb King came in and finished the drive. Moreno just broke a tackle and was not slowing up to go out of bounds when he was hit. UGA was grinding the clock down with no intention to go out of bounds.

Stoerner fumble has to be on the list. This is a good tread thanks for sharing.

My all-time favorite by far. I can still see the ball lying there on the turf for a fraction of a second. Unless we recover it, we have no chance for the NC game. Then DT Billy Ratliff falls on it, and it's Travis Henry time.

great thread, op!! My favorite is dale jones continued smacking and sacking of testeverde in the orange bowl. What a game! Stood in front of the tv the entire game. Thinking of that game still puts a smile on my face all these years later. :)

best t-shirt read...underdog hell 35-7 tennessee

It was on the numbers. Knowshon flew 3 yards sideways. And knowshon went straight to the sideline.
