No order here really.

Fogerty
Stevie Nix
Don Henley
Phil Collins
Kurt Cobain
Freddy M
Paul Rogers
I can argue Clapton and Tom Petty as well really. Especially Clapton on things like Layla and Cocaine.

More current day/less famous that I just like
Aaron Lewis
Brad Arnold (3 Doors down)

For super heavy stuff, the lead singer for System of a Down can absolutely belt, as could the late Dave Williams (original lead singer of Drowning Pool). I also like Ben Burnley.

Chris Cornell. Wondering how long it would take for his name to come up. How insane was Temple of the Dog with Eddie Vedder and Cornell as co-lead singers.

Eddie just sang backup really, he had a co-lead moment on Hunger Strike but he was only on three songs I believe.

Thats because they were a tribute band. Their intentions were to only release one album to dedicate to Andy Wood.
Just think, had Wood never OD'd, we wouldn't have had Pearl Jam. I'd also advise people to check out Woods only album, Mother Love Bone's Apple. Also, if you're a Pearl Jam fan, check out Green River.

Even though everyone has already said it, Mercury is the best rock vocalist ever and it isn't even close. Personal favorite, Cornell.

MLB was awesome. It was a shame how it ended for Andy but it did give us Pearl Jam.

Mercury was undeniable great but not so much that there isn't competition.

Your personal favorite for instance was as good as anyone in his day.

Freddy Mercury...maybe the best range of them all.
Roger Daltry...made screaming an art form.
Robert Plant...duh.
Mick Jagger...(ahem) Marching Charging Feet
David Bowe...fitting that I put Bowe & Jagger so close together?

Edit:

Jack White...my favorite contemporary
Jim James...listen to Evil Urges & tell me I'm wrong.

I was basing it off sheer vocal power. IMHO the two I listed are the only ones that could be mentioned among the top consistently. There are very few (male)rock singers to have a four-octave vocal range. The only other vocalist I can think of would be Maynard, David Lee Roth, and the dude from Iron Maiden.

You should listen to Ian Gillan.
