Greatest runs in Vol history

Jeff Powell's run against Miami is one of my favorites. They had the best defense money can buy :D , and Jeff made them look like they were standing still.

I have to disagree with that. There's no way we should have beaten Alabama in '92. We were lucky to be in the game.
Go back and look at the tape (and note the late hits on our QB while you're at it). We played them toe to toe and had Garner not got hurt and Shuler not have had to leave the game on a crucial series INSIDE Bama territory better judgement says we win. We had the momentum!!

Getting back to the topic, I can't wait until OldVol wakes up and tells us about the great Beattie Feathers runs back when they wore leather helmets!

(Second thought; he better stay away from this thread as I don't want him and Hat to clash today.)

Seriously though, I have the great Vol running backs video, and you would have to include some of those Neyland running backs like Feathers, Cafego, and Butler as some of the greatest all time.

OK, I'm up, I'm up. Danged Geritol!

Oh well, the best run, and I mean poetry in motion, that I've ever seen on video was Major's run against Ga Tech, I believe it was the 56 season.

Greatest run in person: Curt Watson against Arkansas in the 1971 Liberty Bowl. The guy didn't make a long run, but he caught himself once with his right hand and then again with his left to keep from going down before he took it to the goal line.

Most amazing thing I've ever seen on a football field.

What a guy!

Alabama also failed to score from the one yard line. They had control of the game. It was sheer fortune that we were able to cut it to 17-10. We certainly weren't going to score again.

Willie Gault, any of his 5 kick off returns for tds.His punt returns for td's were probably more fascinating, to see in person.......... I was there, when we lost or rather gave the game away to UGA but we thought we had won when late in the game when Travis Stephenson must have ran 60 yards for a TD, then UT swivel kicks to the 50 yard line and David Greene picked us apart once again. :banghead: :bad:

One that doesnt come to mosts minds is Travis Stephens run against Bama in 2001. The line was stacked and STephens looked like he was stopped but a juke right and cut back left and straight ahead for 44 yards with no flags or Bama defenders in sight.

Stephens against the Gators in 2001.......his run was not only great...but seemed to completely destroy the Gators confidence....and his juke moves were unreal with Gators simply grasping for air.....and he was gone...

And remember Jay Graham's TD runs against BAMA in consecutive years.

(Dan, you should start a thread on memorable runs by UT backs. Since I'm older I would start with Curt Watson's run for the winning TD against Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. I can still remember my old farmer dad jumping up and down in our living room.)

I remember Curt's run like it was yesterday. I watched that game at the Montgomery Bell State Park Lodge in Dickson, Tn.

I had the luck of watching one of Curt's games when he was in High School also. He played for Crossville, TN. The game I saw was the Cookeville vs. Crossville. Watson and Mack Brown were the leading players for Cookeville.

Tennessee has had some pretty good running backs, which my favorite was Jamal Lewis during his Freshmen year, while everyone else was focused on Manning. After Manning left, Lewis got the attention and it appeared to get to his head. However, I can't think of one play specifically reguarding Lewis.

For me the greatest run was Casey Clausen during his Freshman year at home. I don't necessarily remember how it happened but his helment came off, and he kept running and fought to get the first down rather than fall on the ball. I thought for sure he was going to be hurt.
This showed me that we had a competitor, which was basically true during his UT career. He might have been a jerk, but he played hard.

Talley another for Travis Stephens at Florida in 2001. He was an all-American that day. Every time Florida would make a play Stephens would come back and hammer another nail in the coffin. And the fact the little guy ran over some of their hardest hitters in the secondary (don't remember the names off the top of my head...) just made it that much sweeter.

I went to the game and the Gainesville newspapers were just brutal on the Florida D... it was such a sweet win.

Ah shucks, it was dan4vols's idea. But we might get in a few uninterrupted thoughts before Hat wakes up in the AM to shoot us down. :D
Thanks for the gesture, its all good. Makes me wanna just sit back and watch replays.

You beat me to it I was going to say the TT run against MSU. I was sitting in the lower deck in that very corner of the endzone when Cobb scored on his long run against Auburn in 89. It was fun to watch.

Speaking of runs against MSU . . . For pure fun - how about Bernard Dafney lumbering 40 yards down the sideline on a perfectly executed Fumblerooskie? It's not very often that a 300 lb lineman gets to carry the ball without anybody knowing it until he gets to the endzone.

Darrin Miller at inside LB intercepted a pitch at the goal line and went 98-99 yards...was'nt that in 85 against Bama?

I think that was the 1987 Kickoff Classic against Indiana, Iowa or somebody like that.

That was a crazy play. He literally knifed through and intercepted the pitchout on what was going to be a toss sweep at the goal line. It's the only time I can ever remember seeing that happen.
