Greatest runs in Vol history

Like tackling a block of cheese, Henry could stiff arm a Sumo wrestler to the ground.

Henry was definitely a tough runner...I recall a conversation I had with a University of South Carolina defensive back who played against Henry. He mentioned how everyone on the SC defense respected Henry and built their gameplan around him...He said the DB's didn't want to see Henry in the open, because he was nothing but "knees and shoulder pads", and it would mean a painful collision for the defender. Always fun to hear the competition, especially a player on the other team, praise a Vol.

Speaking of Henry runs, of of the funniest runs I've ever seen was against Vandy in 98. He had broken into the open, running straight down the middle of the field. He had one guy between him and the end zone, and instead of veering to the left or right, he charged straight ahead and tried to run over the guy.

I apologize before hand , I dont remember the year but it was in the early 80's...John Ward/Bill Anderson on the radio. A Vols ball carrier comes off tackle and there had to be a defensive breakdown cause the guy was all alone after the hole in the line, then just tripped. The call as I recall was .....''what happened on that play Bill Anderson?....''well the guy just broke through a great hole made by the line and had acres of running room, then he just simply fell down''

Another one I didn't see mentioned was Charlie Garner in 1993 versus Bama. I know we didn't win (or lose), and that game is a bittersweet memory, but man, that was a run.

Mose Phillips vs. S. Carolina in 1992. All 11 defensive players had a shot at him, some twice, and could not bring him down. The best run I have ever seen. Then, I have to agree with you Hatvol, the absolute worst call for the two point conversion.

If we are going to throw kick returns into the mix, what about the 1990 TN vs. Florida game. We were leading 7-3 at the half and Dale Carter took the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it 91 yards for a touchdown. That run was one of the most outstanding runs I can remember. I remember he was blasted at midfield, but somehow kept his balance and took it in for the score. After that, the romp was on and the final score was 45-3.

If we are throwing in Returns and runs after receptions...Anytime Gault caught an open seam anywhere near a sideline. For all you youngsters, that would be '79-'83. For all you older fans, you'd not remember seeing him actually run. Just a glimpse when he started, then where he ended up.

as far as "memorable runs" go -- I've always been a little partial to Shaun Ellis running loose on the plains with a Big Orange convoy on his way to the endzone. That Auburn game also had a couple of big runs by Jamal Lewis.

Good call -- I was just thinking the same thing!

I'm sure most of you are tok young to remember Hank Lauricella's 75 yard run against Texas in the 1951 Cotton Bowl. Tennessee won 20 to 14.

Of course, I don't remember that, but I have seen highlights. Pretty nice run.

I would have to say of all the runs of that era, Beattie Feathers' kickoff return and Johnny Butler's run, both against Bama, would rank right up there.
