Gregg Doyel: No brainer to hire Bruce back

No point because I'll list names and you'll respond with yea right, or no way.

So honestly no point.

that's pretty weak.

it's a simple question. all you would have to do is name 5 guys and people could agree or disagree.

the main reason i did this, among other things, is i truly believe that some of you don't fully grasp how impressive a job pearl did while at tennessee.

so impressive, that there aren't too many guys anywhere who could accomplish what he did.

he had a winning record in conference vs. anyone not named kentucky. tennessee average 24 wins a season while he was coach. tennessee was in the top 15 or so in total wins while he was coach and the amount of schools that made the tourney 6 straight years was also around 15.

he is a premier basketball coach. he's not just some dude who did pretty well and some other guy with a good resume will accomplish what he did.

well, i know you are going to say something like "see, this is why i said there is no point", but i am trying to have an honest discussion here.

so, respectfully.

howland is out of a job. so, that could happen.

shaka smart is at a small program. so, that could happen.

ditto, gregg marshall.

buzz williams is a good coach as well.

i don't know how brad stevens makes the list. are there rumors he will be fired by the celtics or something? do you really believe the lure of coaching tennessee would have him leave the boston celtics?

then, comes the question i asked before.

marshall and smart are the the first two names anyone mentions. so, would tennessee go out there and outbid everyone else for them.

i, personnally, think pearl is a better coach than howland.

buzz williams is the same story as marshall and smart. how much cash will they spend.

having said all of that, i don't deny that those are all good coaches. the only coach of that group that i would say is clearly superior to pearl is brad stevens and he's with the celtics.

the other thing is that some guys do well one place and do not do well at another. dan haskins won at boise state and lost at colorado (football). anthony grant was shaka smart before shaka smart. a florida assistant who made good at vcu and was on everyone's next big thing list. he has been an epic fail at alabama.

one of the things that makes pearl so attractive is that there is product knowledge involved. not only do you know he can coach and win.....you know he can coach and win at tennessee.

Bingo. Not to mention, he's turned down bigger programs than Tennessee. Do NOT WANT!

Howland is the only legit possibility on that list.

I know this isn't popular opinion, and let me lead this by saying I'm fine with Pearl returning and he will have my support....

I however do not think he will be as successful as he was, meaning I don't think we will see #1 rankings. I don't think we would see better than what we had in sweet 16 and 1 elite 8.

I know that won't be popular opinion, but it's mine. I think he would be better than what we've got, and I think you're talking a top 25 program and NCAA tournament regular. I think there will be some obstacles he may have to overcome that'll make things a but harder for him this time around also.

Anywho, you asked for my opinion and I gave 5 names fwiw. As far as Stevens, he's not going anywhere but yea there's been some rumors he could pull a saban and realize NBA isn't for him and come back to the college game.

I'm curious to see how Pearl could recruit coming off his face constantly being on ESPN. I personally never thought he recruited that well. during his tenure I can remember at least 2 walk-ons that played MAJOR roles. Jajuan and McBee

McBee didn't play a major role while Bruce was there- he just hit one of the most memorable shots.

His recruiting was decent, but he got a few guys who were risky, and some had to go.

JaJuan Smith wasn't a normal walk on though. Dude plays professional ball and I would imagine, minus maybe Florida, he plays a significant role on any other SEC team.

I wonder if Petrino back to Arky would be a no brainer? Several parallels.... adultery and lying to begin with. But, Bobby didn't lie to the NCAA and bring sanctions down on his team....

What makes the Bruce to UT thing not even close to Petrino to Arky is, pretty much what's driving this whole machine, Fan support. Bruce is still extremely popular. Petrino, just a guess, not so much.

i noticed louisville was quick to fire rick pitino because of adultery.

For me, this is like cam newton.

People get up in arms and want to see there are rules that must be followed and have consequences. Then, you get to see the dude go somewhere else and thrive and wonder why no one else was held to the same standard.

Someone is going to hire pearl again. And pearl will win where he goes.

Do you want it to be Tennessee or somewhere else....say, Alabama for instance?

Why are pearl's actions unforgivable for Tennessee but they can be forgiven by everyone else?

Because the brain trust influencing the athletic programs currently are a bunch of sanctimonious, egotistical paper pushers who have little idea of how to actually run an athletic department.

The big boy donors that had some idea of how crucial athletics are to a school like UT that were on the BOT or in positions of influence have moved onto other things( like being Governor, dodging fraud charges, and retreating to Wyoming while they get out from under Little Cedar Mtn) leaving Cheek and others to their own devices.

I hope Pearl gets the opportunity to come back. I have little hope the powers that be will give it to him though.
