Gregg Doyel Shreds UT.

The players are coachable enough that they still do a good job defending the inbounds play. So either they suddenly don't care about the other aspects of the game to listen to Pearl, or Pearl doesn't coach anything else as well. Take your pick.

You know, I am glad that this 2008 Sports season is over for Tennessee. It's been painful to sit through. The football team was pathetic, the mens bball team took an early exit, and the womens bball team isn't doing well either. Florida beat Tennessee in baseball. I am just READY for 2009-2010 season to arrive. Hopefully, it will be better than the last.

In case you forgot, there's no crying in baseball.

It is painfully obvious that the talent was there, but in terms of preparation, defense and overall game planning there wasn't a player on the team that really gave a rat's ass. While I think Pearl does care about the performance of his teams, I don't think there are many players on this team are coachable.

Determining the responsible party for that fact is really what we are left with on the VN.
in this respect, this is where i agree with Doyel's asssessment. we've seen BP coach teams to something more than what they were expected to. this year, i think it has a lot more to do with the players than the coach. jmo.

and again, i readilyt admit that there are more than a few superior coaches than BP out there. but the stuff i've seen all year from the likes of Prince, hopson, chism et al is indicative of players that just didn't "get it". i think they just epxected to roll out there and win the conf. no questions asked. when they got challenged early on in the season, i don't think they reacted to it very well, and it stuck with them the rest of the season when the going got tough.

even wtih pearls' 1st three teams, esp last year's, this team just made plays when it had to. it got the three to drop or it got the TO on the i/b pass or what ever....something happened to put those teams on run to where they could close games.

this team lacks that. which is why after reading damn's column, i can't disagree with it at all.

it'll be interesting to see how the returning players respond next year, and it will be interesting to see how BP responds as well. I think he trusted them a bit too much in the end, will he learn from that or take a wait and see approach heading in to next season?

I agree with most of the article but the part about the all-americans doesn't seem to apply to Duke, North Carolina, and other programs that get the blue chips each year.

yea but their coaches know how to motivate those players. Or at least see player who are motivated and not. Just my take on what he's writing.

Those teams are filled with all-americans. But when you get your first Mcdonald's All-American in a while, he's going to be the big shot on campus and not be as motivated as he should be. Just a theory.
