You know, I've been getting increasingly harsh in my criticism of Donovan for the last couple of months -- and I'm still worried that things aren't going to be the same after what happened with the Magic -- but a guy on local sports radio made some good points the other day about how successful he has been at Florida, making the tourney like 8 or 9 straight years, with a Final Four and two national championships since I think he said 1996 or something.

I agree, but it seems difficult not to succeed being the state school in Florida

Blaming the Magic debacle is pretty generous.

He nailed it. The Vols are just lazy.

They're motivated by dunks, and 1s, and staring the other team down after every made basket.....but they don't give a damn about winning.

Not sure how the coach gets a pass in the article.

Why does Tyler get this pass? He was awful in almost all of our losses this season. The double pump thing just doesn't work. He should have murdered that team today, but didn't get it done. Chisn and Prince are goofball, no sense having teamkillers, but I think the others appear to be playing to win.

Pearl is as much of the issue as anyone. There is no expectations placed on these players, limited accountability and absolutely no focus, as it isn't required.

I give Tyler a pass for this reason: if his intensity and desire to win were matched by his teammates, he wouldn't have to try to take the game into his own hands and start forcing things, which led to the various bad plays and bad decisions and bad shots and turnovers that contributed to several of our losses.

Your last paragraph, I agree with completely. It's not as though blue-chip talent can't be motivated - were I Pearl, I might have had the tape of Blake Griffin, fresh off a concussion, diving over the scorer's table going after a loose ball on an endless loop somewhere at Pratt Pavillion.

I understand you generally think he's mediocre. I give him a bit more credit than that and tend to think that after the NCAA c-ships he got bored and then the whole aborted thing at the Magic made it worse.

Either way, he needs to step on the gas next season a bit earlier with the team, I think, and toughen them up defensively. Gators should be a lot better next year. But I said the same thing last year and the improvement was minimal.

Meanwhile, the only SEC team left in the NCAA tournament after Round One is LSU. How bad is that?

He shouldn't have.. He's the root of the problem.

You've hammered it home all year - there's no discipline, no accountability. Nothing about this team is "workmanlike"....there's no passion, no hustle.
Even Bruce seems to lack some of the fire that he showed in his first few seasons in Knoxville.

Defense is as much a decision, as it is an ability...the Vols never seemed to make the decision to commit to playing defense this year. Hopefully, Pearl will demand it from this team moving forward - and hopefully he'll hold them accountable. You can't flip it on and off like a lightswitch though...I just don't see things changing any time soon.

IMO, that signature puts Sabanocchio's "work" to shame.

This was pretty much going to be my response BPV.

I'm only talking about T Smith from an effort and team spirit standpoint. I just wish he would show his leadership a bit more.

I understand, but just don't buy it. I don't think he plays harder nor do I think he's more bent on winning. I think he is just the best player so people take it easy on him. He was hugely disappointing this season. He went from preseason league MVP to barely making all SEC.

Maybe, just maybe the boys are not hungry because the coach is not hungry. The Bruce now has a nice fat pay check, he has a new 'love' and a cool new house. He has 'arrived' in the big time. Let's hope this dose of reality has hit him in the nose and he kicks some princely hopson butt! He is in danger of repeating a Jerry Green episode - talent but no control. The article was painful to read but he said what most of us have said all year with this team.

Pearl is hungry grass. Have you seen him coach?

He has let down some where. The proof is in the pudding. The dude hit the nail on the head in the article. During the tournament I wanted to kick J.P.'s butt and then work my way down the bench. The man was coaching - yes. But those boys are not listening. That is even worse!

Tyler was accompanied by double teams more often this year, due to a combination of Prince, Maze, Tabb, Hopson, and Tatum being on the outside.

Last year, people would rather take their chances with Tyler one on one in the paint, and not leave Lofton or Smith.

Hopson and Tatum need to automatic if open

This article should be required reading for anyone that wants to put on the uniform next year.

Its all been said before, but it was nicely written.

Did not see the game but a friend just told me that during a time out the commentators commented on the fact that the bench was waving to the crowd and that was not like a Pearl coached team.

As a UT fan, you would like to think so. If both could exhibit the ability to change how teams defended us, we would still be playing. Not consistant enough right now, to be a big impact. That will have to change next year, or we are in the same boat.

Apparently a couple of players were waving to their families with a few minutes to go in the game. I mean how idiotic could they be?

I was at the SEC tournament games behind the bench, and pretty much the same thing was going on...

And it's not just Hopson. J.P. Prince, another former McDonald's All-American who transferred after flaming out at Arizona, doesn't play hungry either. Maybe Hopson and Prince are rubbing off on people, because junior Wayne Chism looked awfully satisfied with himself, too. I know he can shoot the 3-pointer on occasion, but he was the biggest guy on the court Friday -- and he chucked up nine of them. He grabbed six rebounds. When your center and biggest player has three more 3-point attempts than rebounds, well, that's a problem.

The Volunteers couldn't be bothered to play defense ... and all that was riding on it was their season.
That's hideous. Good riddance, Tennessee. Or whoever that was in the Tennessee jerseys..

Can't argue with any of that.
