Let me say, when John Beck did come out [of college], I had him rated as the top quarterback coming out that year, and I didn’t even think it was close,” said Shanahan, who traded with Baltimore last August to get Beck. “I had a lot of confidence in John Beck when he came out in 2007. I evaluate the quarterbacks every year, and I do have confidence in John Beck. He was by far my No. 1 guy. I think the world of him.”
Jarvis Jenkins is only six days into his first NFL training camp, but the rookie defensive lineman is already turning heads.
A daily standout in one-on-one drills between offensive and defensive linemen, the 2011 second-round pick has been the subject of praise from both Mike Shanahan and Jim Haslett. The 23-year-old defensive end has seen action at both defensive end spots during the first week of camp.
But while Jenkins knows he’s generated some early-August buzz, he’s not celebrating just yet.
“The main thing for me is to come in here and get the plays down and get my technique right,” Jenkins said. “I couldn’t show I was a rookie. I’ve got to play like a veteran. I have to learn from these older guys and I need to do it quick.”
Adjusting from college ball to the NFL is an arduous task for any rookie, but because Jenkins is learning a new position his learning curve is increasingly steeper.
A defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense at Clemson, the Redskins are asking Jenkins to play on the outsides of their three-man front.
“Everything is new to him,” said Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett. “It’s not uncommon or anybody playing any position that he’s never played before. They’re all going through growing pains.”
Rex is obviously going a little too far, but I really think this team is going to be a lot more competitive. I think 8-8 is easily within reach. The Eagles likely will win the East, but I think even they have some enormous holes (LB, OL and Safety). I still don't know why the Giants didn't resign Boss and the Cowboys will remain a circus. The Packers, Falcons and Saints are my picks to be the tops of the NFC and the 'Skins don't play any of them.
The Redskins have a very easy schedule. The Pats game might get ugly, but the rest of the non division foes are Arizona, St Louis (I will admit that the Rams could be very good imo), Carolina, Buffalo, San Francisco, Miami, Seattle, the Jets and Minnesota. 8-8 is very attainable and if something goes wrong with Dallas or NYG, I think the 'Skins might even sneak into a wild card slot.
What's the unifying characteristic between those teams? Questionable/poor/rookie QBs and erratic crop of WRs.
Jets game is a likely loss. Rams worry me and Arizona could be nasty too. Great WRs have had a heyday against us recently and Fitz is definitely one of the games best.
