Harrison Bailey

I hate to say it, but choosing the VOLS was a horrible decision for Bailey. Jim Chaney was not coaching QBs like he did at Purdue. Weinke never proved he could coach anyone in Knoxville.

And then he was a poor fit for Heupel's scheme.

I hate to think that he will never meet his potential because he came to Knoxville, but that is what happened.
Now he is years behind in his development with little time left. A true shame.

An acquaintance of mine who is a huge UT fan and follows recruiting pretty closely said the exact same thing like 2 days after he committed. Said he was a decent prospect, but people were way too excited about him based on what he'd shown in HS.

Said he might end up being a great player, but most of his HS production was from throwing balls to Arik Gilbert who 1) was wide open by 10 yards, 2) made an incredible catch on a not well-particularly placed ball or 3) caught a short pass and made guys miss for a long gain.

Of course, ironically enough, Gilbert has also shown nothing in college and is on his third different school. His issues seem to be off-the-field and mental, but still.

We all wanted him to work out really badly, but he was definitely a beneficiary of playing on a GREAT (illegally recruited) high school team... Gilbert not working out has been a real head scratcher, he’s one of the best high school players I’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely not lack of ability - weirdly similar to Bryce Brown.

He was already ruined. Pruitt and his staff would have turned Nico into JG.

He was vastly overrated as a recruit anyways. That 5th star was beyond silly. Thought he could develop into a solid QB in 2-3 years with the right coaching but he was not the superstar people thought. His film and Nicos are night and day.

That 5th star you speak of is imaginary. He wasn't ever considered a 5 star recruit. All the major recruiting services listed him as a 4 star prospect. Go back and revisit his profile on any of the sites.

I’m trying to figure out why over 10years, my sister still lives there. I’ve visited a couple times. It’s fun and all, but there’s no way I could call it home.

Granted, it's been about twenty years but I used to think the same as you-until I was forced to move out there, or basically be jobless.

Honestly, at least at the time it was dirt cheap (and I moved there from East TN) to live there. Lived there five years and don't think I ever paid for a meal in a casino-always comped.

Add that you can drive 50 miles and be literally in the middle of nowhere and go exploring. Used to love prowling around in old basically abandoned gold rush cities, etc.

The only real downside was the oppressive heat 9 months of the year.

Just stop. At the time he had the 4th most passing yards in Georgia HS history. He has the second most passing yards for a season in Georgia HS history. He is 4th all time in passing TDs. He is 7th all time in passing TDs for a season. Everything about the kid screamed 5*. Bottom line is he got ruined just like JG did.

In a way he was a guy born out of time. Most programs want mobility now and he just isn't fast. He's suited for a more pro-style O... and almost no one runs the old school pro-style system any more. Philosophically, Pruitt was the ideal match for him.

His supporters were very overzealous. But the bottom line is that he's no longer a Vol. The Vols have been better without him. Unfortunately, the divorce hasn't worked out so well for him.

Crompton wasn't bad at all once he got some real coaching.
He got a couple years with Cutcliffe when he was backup to Ainge. I’d say he got good bc caching even if not much PT. Clawson has proven to be a solid coach of QB’s too, but that whole deal in 2008 was a disaster. I’m not sure I’d chalk up his issues to 2009 just on coaching. Clearly, Kiffin got something out of him, but he didn’t exactly have losers with no history of developing QB’s before Kiffin got here.
