Pursuing this guy doesn't immediately make a starter or mean Satterwhite/Lang aren't cutting it. This one just seems like a no-brainer. He may be perfectly content to come in as a backup, get his masters degree, play with his brother, and maybe even be a coach-in-training. You never know.

How is bringing in a guy in the portal much different than bringing in a high level recruit as far as current players are concerned? Either you are good enough to compete for the spot and win it, you are comfortable with being the next guy up or you transfer to a team that needs your position or a team that is less competitive. This is modern college football. IF there is any question that Satterfield may not be ready to be an SEC center, you bring someone in. If you do not have depth you bring someone in. This guy sounds perfect in that (assuming he knows/thinks he is not likely to go to the NFL) he may be willing to come in as a likely backup just to be along for the ride of a big SEC school, play with his brother and possibly get some playtime. If he does have realistic NFL dreams,( have no idea how he projects) then all the more reason to bring him in.

You take the best or get the best depth if you can find it from anywhere this isn’t the 90’s to 2015…if you want a team like that go root for Clemson who doesn’t properly utilize the transfer portal lol
You still have to develop the high school talent and fill gaps with the portal. Tennessee does it in a calculated and smart way. Some just think every portal player is gold and can help and that is not right either. GBO

Nobody is saying otherwise

Carson Gentles older brother just hit the portal. Has one year remaining. I wonder if we’d pursue - and give Satterwhite/Lang another year to develop

Coach Chop and Rodney Garner follow him on Twitter. Tell tale sign we’re looking is if other coaches/staff start following.

He would be a nice addition to the offensive line room.

Seems like a sure way for Satterwhite our projected starting center to transfer for a one year fix. We need to stop chasing the shiny objects and develop what we have if they are showing promise and growth. Surviving on the transfer portal is a recipe for failure in my opinion. The portal is for filling NEEDS that we haven't filled with our recruiting, I do not believe center fits that description.
I don’t believe glen has it in him to develop a good lineman

Being fair to middling on the O line with 5 starters and below average backups isn’t calculated or smart,
But is what we’ve had for 4 years

It's hard for guys to develop past a point without playing time, practice is not a game. They need to be out there with real bullets flying. The last point I would make is we aren't getting highly rated portal guys without concessions being made for playing or starting. The guys rated highly aren't going to waste their last year without KNOWING they will be starting, would you?
Hell no you wouldn't and I definitely think it will affect recruiting if we always pass over guys that have worked and earned their shot for a proven portal guy. Yes we all want the best but you can't tell me as a recruit this type of thing wouldn't affect your decision. Save the macho "I'm a badass and can take the position" ******** for someone else. These kids and their parents aren't going to take that kind of chance when they have 45 other options that they don't have to worry about. If our OL drops off without this guy then CJH has to rethink the coaching they are getting. Nothing changes for the good if we keep backfilling with portal for every starting position, only bad can come from thins type of thinking .

Our handling of each recruit or transfer guy is probably driven by the progress that each of our large group of underclass guys are making in the weight room, at the training table and in the gamer analysis. Not going to share too much good news for prospects to use in their analysis. Not going to diss a guy working on being a true VFL. So really no basis for projections either way unless some inside sources open up. But it is a big list on the roster. Prospects may have a better handle after visits and establishment of inside connections with staff and players.

Both sides have significant risk/reward calculations going on till the papers are signed.

I really wish people would stop regurgitating Basilio’s BS about the HS recruits.

I don’t care if the entire OL comes from the portal if the team is winning.

And the team is winning
Agree....but the OL is our weakest unit. If any unit deserves criticism it's there.

Our WR/LB recruiting is just as suspect. Either our evals are off or we just can't develop them....or both.
That is silly...CJH staff has shown it can develop players... we have developed a lot of guys. both portal guys and guys already on roster. using your example of WR.. Velus Jones, Jalin Hyatt, Cedric Tillman, Thornton, McCoy, Squirrel. LB? Pearce, Carter, Telander, Josephs. Does not matter fi you got them from HS or portal did you make players better? Miles Kitselman was a forgotten cog at Bama destined to likely not even get a camp invite. He is now draftable. he played 3 games in Juco.. and in 2 years at Bama had 2 catches for 18 yards. H came to UT to compete for snaps. and is now having a great year for a college TE much less one in the SEC In a 3 man rotation. Right now he has more catches more yards and more TD's than any TE on Bamas roster. He was Charlie Browder there. SO yeah this staff develops guys and guys that want to compete will come. If you are a HS player and come in ready you will play.. its been proven (squirrel white, Boo Carter, James Pearce) If you're not you will sit till you can (Satterwhite, Matthews, Staley, Seldon).

UT football is a meritocracy.. if it wasn't Bishop and Peyton Lewis wouldn't be getting snaps ahead of Cam Seldon and Kalifah Keith. Neither Keith or Sledon are scrubs they other guys are just that good. Patrick wilks would have never gotten snaps the past few seasons.. but if you earn em you get em. And, to lay it all down and drop the mic.. Will Brooks... if there is anyone that wants to claim this is not a meritocracy explain Will Brooks? That kid earned his spot and got it. Christian Harrison son of a 15 year NFL vet safety can barely sniff the field and Brooks has thrived on it. We have recruited multiple 4 star safeties since 2022 and how many passed Brooks on the depth chart? Folks act like he just started playing this year.. he's been getting significant snaps since last year and even as a walk-on got some snaps in 2022.

We are fine in recruiting. We are fine on player development. This team, this program is well ahead of any realistic expectations anyone should have had given where we came from. The problem is we are so far ahead folks are getting greedy.

Disagree. That would be WR imo
Both need to improve for sure. Our offense has me so confused. Extremely talented QB on the rise, Heisman level RB, and we still have so many struggles.

Edit: Also a stable of good TEs.

A high level portal guy pretty much is expected to start when they’re brought in.

he already got his ivy league degree.. why pay extra ivy league money to play In a weak ass conference instead of chilling at home with your bro and getting paid to do so. Tuition.. just Tuition at Harvard is 57k a year. Lets just assume gentle came to UT as a walkon tuition for him would be just under 14k. He gets a scholly and a small NIL deal that's a profit over 200k. There is nothing he could possibly accomplish at Harvard in one year that would beat that out hence him hitting portal. Does not mean he's coming to UT, just means he's a smart fella. If he comes to UT then he is a smarter fella. If he does have NFL level talent he is guaranteed to win the starting spot and be on display. Even if he's not NFL level he would at worst be 2nd string and might even win the job anyway. 3 years of playing experience (4 years practicing) at center is hard to replicate at any level.
